I see a low scoring grind it out type game and I'm going with the home team.

SHU 66 Wichita State 64

Very important game for us too, Steve, it being a barom eter of how far we have come on the maturation process. Wichita is one heck of a good ballclub, if Seton can compete on an even keel with them for the full 40, I would be impressed. And I would certainly like a win. But no, I'm not in the prediction business[I feel bad karma about touting V's]. Superstitious, I guess

It certainly is important for Seton Hall but still more important for WSU, given how their season has unfolded so far.

I don't see need as a factor. I see want. And with both teams involved in a national TV contest, one playing a revenge game, the other playing a Big East team leads me to believe the match-up will be played with high intensity on both sides.

Clearly Wichita State is the better team. They're also the more experienced one. But I think eventually this young Pirate squad is going to play a break through game and I think that might happen at home this Saturday.

I think SPK is spot on, WSU has been backed into a corner with 4 losses already. They cannot afford to lose another winnable game.

WSU 73
SHU 67

Even with the injuries and losses, WSU is somebody. We are still trying to get there. They can win their conf, and if they finish strong they are well known enough for the injuries to be considered. If we get outworked cause they want it more, that would be problematic (to say the least). I don't think it is gonna happen.

WSU has had our number since Louis Orr's tourney disaster.

Maybe this is our year. Up to the players.

They can easily take their tournament and reach the ncaa's

I had a dream last night, what a lovely dream it was...all of the players were playing together -SHU by 1. Dowdy hits a 3 at the buzzer!

A team needing a win is a not good predictor of games. If so, every team that needed a win would win and everyone would make the tournament and then go on and win the tournament.

A team wins because they execute better. Wichita is winning games of late because they again have one of the best point guards in the country who helps his team with their overall execution.

I think it's going to be a great close basketball game but wichita st. executes better down the stretch and pulls it out late.

WSU is a team with good quality depth, a lot of size and plays a very physical game. I think they wear us down and if the refs call a very tight game especially on the front court players it hurts us because we're not as deep upfront as they are . We keep it close but I think they prevail WSU 72 - SH 66.

I think we'll be game and I sort of feel like this could be "one of those days" for us where there's excitement, we look the best we have and we get the win.

I think the veteran experience and intelligence of that WSU team is really impressive and will probably hold us off. They've also found their mojo again. And both teams have been off a week, which probably makes their defensive chops even sharper.

Maybe something like 70-67 WSU. Haven't seen enough of our team in a flow to think we can just beat them with emotion and street ball.

The Pirates are more athletic and arguably more talented, but going against experience, an excellent coach, and one of the best PGs in the nation will be no easy task.

Saturday is the day we become a force to reckon with.

Van Vleet: 62
Whitehead & Co.: 68

I'm going with the more talented team. Seton Hall 72 - Wichita State 67.
I'm curious on this. As a Wichita State fan, I'm honestly curious on what spots you feel you hold the talent advantage? (I don't know enough about SHU besides that Whitehead is goooooood)

WSU 72-67 in front of a light crowd of 5,500. I hope I'm wrong on both counts.

Most likely no position. Maybe Delgado. Maybe whitehead over VanVleet (but he is def a better PG than IW).

We at SHU love to over exaggerate our talent levels re other big time programs.

I see more of the same. We don't close out a tight game and lose by 5.
73-68 sounds about right.

Braziller tweeted there'd be "a ton" of recruits at game so let's hope we put on a good show.

I believe we have to do 3things to win the game shorten our bench meaning less subbing, second our guards just play even with their guards and lastly we must dominate inside that is the one area I think we have a edge if we can do all three we win GO PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!

I think everyone has the homer glasses on when talking about their team. This is how I see it for WSU.

PG: Van Vleet and Frankamp
Your PG is probably more athletic, but I wouldn't take ANY PG in the nation over Van Vleet. He just makes everyone else better. Frankamp is just in his 3rd game in a year and a half, so I don't expect crazy production from him, just a few good shots

SG: Baker and Frankamp (Shamet is still injured)
About the same as above, Your SG is probably more athletic but Baker just has all the intangibles. He plays hard defense, and knows how to create his shot when needed.

SF: Brown and McDuffie
This one is probably a toss up between the 2 teams. This is probably our most athletic position, but its hit and miss whether they actually "Show up". The first few games of the year they were both very timid and didn't want to drive or shoot. The last 4 games or so, they have really started to step up and take on some scoring. Zach Brown is an excellent defender, McDuffie is still learning all his assignments, but just oozes potential

PF: Wessel and Kelly
This one is edge to SHU. Wessel does a lot .. but he's a 6'4 PF. Though if you watch the game, I guarantee he will gain WSU at least 5 more possessions by grabbing loose balls, tieing people up, taking charges, or just getting in the right place at the right time. He's the poster boy for a glue guy. He's only going to score on put back and 3's, not really a threat to drive. Kelly is a good rebounder but has struggled getting into the offensive flow.

C: Morris, Wamukota, and Nurger (Grady is still injured)
This is probably an edge to SHU also. Morris is 6'8 260, Wamukota is 6'11 235, and Nurger is 6'10 244. They do a good job on defense of forcing post men away from the basket. Having 3 big men gives us 15 fouls to give down low. They held 2 quality centers in Zimmerman and Poeltl to 11 points each. On offense, none of them have really good back to the basket moves, but still can score when needed.

So looking at that, it looks like we have 2 for WSU, 2 for SHU, and 1 push. So should be a great game either way. I predict a close win by WSU (homer pick :) ), leaning on our experienced guards to pull us through.

Saw someone reference that there will be a nice crowd. Not sure if that's based on stub hub info or not.

Dan also alluded to the fact that exams end next week so winter break shouldn't be a factor as far as the student section is concerned. We definitely need a HC advantage for this one. As much as seeing a big (and energetic) crowd can help, I could see a disappointing crowd being a bit deflating.

Wichita St. by the numbers:

Wichita shoots a lot more than their opponents but hasn't been a good shooting team.

They have shot the ball 109 more times than their opponent (25 more than Utah, St.Louis 18, Alabama 19, USC 19 UNLV 9).

Currently 9th in Missouri Valley at .395 fg %, 7th in MV at .308 3pt %. Some of their guys are due for a good shooting game but it's very possible they continue to shoot poorly.

They get more shots because they are 1st in MV with 13 oreb per game/ 1st in MV with only 9.8 to's per game/ and force 15+ to's per game.

How we match up:

The good.

Delgado/Ish/Nzei/Desi should and need to limit their oreb and 2nd chance points.(stickboy is right..every time Wessel gets a loose ball or an oreb its a back breaker)

The bad.

We have 13.7 T/O per game. In last year's game we had 6 ast and 18 turnovers.

We avoid getting killed by... Having 13 to's or less.

We win by... controlling the boards and shooting better.

We have 13.7 T/O per game. In last year's game we had 6 ast and 18 turnovers.

After the first two games of the year the Hall is averaging 11.75 turnovers a contest.

This young team is gaining experience. Should be interesting to see if that continues against a strong defensive team.

wsu has a three headed center...I would foul Delgado and force SHU to beat them from the line or from the outside. If they do we have little chance to win. If we hit our foul shots(unlikely) and control the inside we can win.

I think the Pirates have a sizeable frontcourt advantage in this game. Not sure if WSU has seen a team that attacks the glass like our forwards. Should be interesting and could offset their sizeable guard advantage.
