He left us for more $$$$$ right, I get that, but now he saw he had to share $$$ with the football team, did he leave UMD ( they didn't fire him) because he didn't want to share money so he came back to the Big East to only have basketball to worry about? I read he didn't get along with the football coach and such, Kevin thought he'd go to UMD make money and do well but then he saw they were focused on football and I guess wasn't his niche, so he is back in our basketball only conference, VU is not that much far off from us, he just messed up and now has to face his protege , May God bring our Pirates success, Amen - Kaz

I don't think it's that complicated. He thought he was going to a better situation at Maryland, a football school who plays in a monster megaconference. He realized what it's like when basketball isn't first. Maryland is a much better situation than Seton Hall right now (who isn't across the P5), but not as good as he thought it would be and with much more internal drama.

A better job opened in a basketball-centric conference he loves, he went back to what he prefers.

Maybe thinks he never should have left us to begin with now, who knows. Doesn't matter.

I think his public statements referring to the points that there were issues with resource constraints that the Maryland administration put on him. summed up some key reasons he left. Nova throws a lot of money at their Basketball program. They have some very deep pocketed alumni who put actions to their words by donating big time $. He wanted that level of commitment and couple that with what I assume is a $5M a year deal guaranteed for 5 or 6 years and it probably was a no brainer. This B1G jobs are not what they are cracked up to be when you consider the backseat to Football, the brutal travel situation and who knows what else.

Nova is rolling in $$$. Don’t forget they have to pay Willards’s buyout. Not sure how much that is but that’s on top of everything else they put into hoops.

$2M. Pretty low relatively speaking. Another reason why he was an attractive candidate.

And the buyout drops by $500k on Tuesday. If what he owes UM is any impediment for VU they are in bad shape. According to this board every coach has a high 7 figure buyout.

If you don’t think Nova is loaded I don’t know what to tell you. One guy funded their entire $50+ million arena and practice facility upgrades. That guy’s name is on the building— Fennerman (sp?). They will have a reported $7-8 million between revenue share and NIL and they are paying Willard $5 million plus his buyout.

Don't think it's that complicated. He left Seton Hall for a school with more money. Since NIL became involved and especially with the impending House settlement, revenue share become a huge part of equation. Maryland had the school money and NIL investment pre-House but now that Villanova as a school can provide money for the roster in addition to NIL, it can offer more towards the roster than Maryland. Since most football schools are going to spend at least 75% of the $20 million max of its revenue share on football. As long as Villanova can put >$5 million before NIL, which is likely, he has more money towards his roster at Villanova

the amount of money on the mainline is sneaky wild

Nova IS that far off of SHU. The only thing they have in common is they're both in the Big East and located in the Northeast. If Willard never left for MD and Nova wanted him he'd leave SHU for them. It's one of the best jobs in the country.

Willard, from a economic and professional perspective, played this perfectly. He is now an a-hole to most of the sporting world because of how he handled it, but imagine being told that he'd be the coach of Villanova 3 years from now after that TCU game. This is the best job he'll ever get and one of the best in the country. And he's probably doubled his salary in 3 years.

He looks like a jerk, but if he goes on and is successful at Nova I'm sure it will all have been worth it in his mind.
