Stop. I coached baseball in Newark for close to 10 years and consider it an absolute blessing. There are some really great parents and young men in Newark. This does not represent the majority of Newark.
ehhh.

my favorite quote was a few years ago Pru held the VMAs. the locals were thrilled

"This shows that Newark is so much more than just guns and violence and the lead water, things of that nature. It’s a lot of positivity over here,"

I really salute you for saying this. That other post was a true cheap shot and I admire your quick, forceful and just response.

I was never military, no need to salute me. If the post means that much to you buy me a scotch. And if you really appreciate the post that much a bottle wouldn’t hurt.

Newark is a city on the rise. Mayor Baraka and Superintendent Roger Leone have brought the school system in the right direction. Glad to see they were on site with a quick response.
Sadly I disagree with you. Newark was a city on the rise when the built the PAC in the 90s. Newark was a city on the rise when they built the Prudential Center in 2007. Now they have the Mars building. Hoboken, Jersey City have been able to build up drastically in that time by taking a small section and building it up. Newark hasn’t followed that philosophy through. They do something nice once every 10 years to continue to say they’re doing something. When there’s a true police presence on Broad St from the PAC to the Prudential 24/7 I’ll start believing Newark is going in the right direction. There’s so much potential for a mile of restaurants, shops, hotels, etc but that potential has been there for 10 years and nothing has been done to entice businesses to open up down there. I will get excited about the school system when people living in Morristown type areas who work in NYC choose to move to Newark and put their kids in that school system and have a shorter commute to work.

Ridiculous. Hope they're prosecuted to full force. No excuse for acting like an animal.

Name another city where players jumped the coach?

I read that history of newark book. Its basically just a spin cycle of corruption. Rinse repeat. I wish it became the next big thing next to new york city. But hoboken, jc, jc heights, astoria, LIC, bed stuy, bushwick, moorstown, are all doing what newark isnt and it will prob continue that way. Why on earth would i live in newark? Restaurants? Shops? Sounds unique

Send an email to tawblpaul@yahoo.com with your mailing address and brand of preference and a bottle will come your way. (Just don’t pick some 75 year old single malt that costs more than a steak dinner for 8 at Peter Luger’s).

Name another time in Newark this has happened where this qualifies as a “Newark thing”

Sorry buddy but until you are actually here in the thick of it as I am weekly (Central/South Ward) you wouldn't see the positives. Just what you read in the newspaper which will always be more negative than positive because of the "clicks".

Baraka inherited a huge mess. The Newark schools have been run by a corrupt school board for years and Baraka seems to be making strides. He’s the first Newark mayor in a long time that has things going in a better direction and it’s good to see IMO. This incident was unfortunate but they seem to be all over it.

Is Mayor Baraka any relation to Imamu Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones) who was so prominent in Newark in the 70's?

Newark has unquestionably lagged behind other major cities when it comes to urban revitalization so skepticism isn't unwarranted. There are a myriad of reasons why, including lack of government foresight, an unwillingness for developers to invest, and, unfortunately, a reputation that has not made it a viable alternative for prospective new residents. Its initiatives have been stop and go and other cities such as Harrison have taken advantage and sucked up a lot of the pool of people looking to move to the area. That being said, it does seem Newark has turned the corner and there is a ton of investment and development going on. But it takes time. People look at cities such as Jersey City as examples of what can be done, but its gentrification has been going on for over 20 years. For a long time its was Newport and nothing else. In the early 2000s you had buildings like Liberty Towers open but even then most development was confined to the waterfront. It wasn't until the 2010ish that buildings started to sprout up in other neighborhoods, and even more recently in area's such as Journal Square and Bergen Lafayette. As far as schools go, that takes even longer. Places like Hoboken are still trying to figure out a way to integrate new families into the public school system.

Bud I coached baseball in the North Ward (Lake St) and Ironbound (Riverbank park) for 10 years. When I did I practiced daily in the summer and had weekly workouts inside schools in the winter. Granted it's been a few years since I've been involved, however I stay in contact with quite a few people down there.I see what's going on down there when I go to our games. So my perception of Newark is not just reading the papers. Maybe Baraka will get things done long term. It seems every mayor Newark has had was going to get the job done. When the big timers at Mars and Prudential start moving into Newark, then I'll get excited.

Yes when else in Newark have players jumped a coach? You want me to name another city where it’s happened, then you can name another instance time where players jumped a coach.
Its not the specific action, just crime in general. But the fact is it DID happen. Only in newark. Why do i need another instance? We have our example

newark is a bottom 5/10 city i dont know who youre trying to fool. I wish it were different

They interviewed a student at the school on the news this morning and his pain and embarrassment was clear. He made it perfectly clear that he was as disgusted as anyone that this happened, but also that would be used to clown their city, picking an incident like this to paint the entire citizenry in a two-dimensional way.

Of course there are good citizens in newark. But you cant sit there and try to explain “newark isnt like this” when youre being interviewed for “newark being just like that”

I'm not fooling anyone. I've said in another post Newark isn't a great city, but there are a ton of really good people. You asked me to name another city where this specific incident happened. Now I'm returning serve and asking you when this specific incident happned in Newark. We both know crime isn't a Newark thing, it's a problem in a lot of places.

There is no return. The answer is no other city. When did this incident happen? This week . Its what were talking about. It happened.

Unfortunately there are many good people in dumps like Newark and they're stuck there to deal with the crime and corruption, not to mention uncooperative citizens who hate the big bad police. Assaulting a coach is even a new low for the Newark dregs. I cannot imagine how hard it must be for good people to try and raise kids in some of these neighborhoods where gangs rule

Not what I was implying if it came across that way. Newark has had problems for a long time pre Booker and after. But now that you mention it, I have a buddy who is a liberal Dem that does some work for Newark and has over the years. He thought CB was one of the worst mayors Newark ever had (I won't elaborate because its not important) and he goes back a ways. What is important is he says that he really likes what Ras is doing which I am happy to hear as I worked in Newark and support the community in different ways and have for a long time. He gave me a few examples and likes how he leads in meetings and how he seems to really have Newark's best interests at heart and how tough a job it is (many many problems exist that will hound any mayor). That was really what I was trying to get across and I'm hopeful Newark continues to improve.

Baraka and a power lifter from Newark that I also know get along and have partnered on many issues too. Further Baraka impressed me when he went after NYC when they were shipping homeless people to Newark and putting them in flea bag motels. He went to bat for the homeless and wanted to stop the practice because they were getting moved from one bad spot to another and NYC was not cooperating with Newark at all during the process. I respect a lot of what he is doing. That is the point.

Cory Booker was viewed as the antithesis to Sharpe James but sought highest political position asap
