Willard Post Game Quote

According to KenPom.....

7 wins:
Bradley.....RPI 324
Dartmouth.....RPI 215
Georgia.....RPI 82
Mississippi.....RPI 67
Rutgers.....RPI 250
Troy.....RPI 273
Wagner.....RPI 240

2 Losses:
George Washington.....RPI 46
Long Beach State.....RPI 150

So, somebody explain to me with that schedule how 7-2 (according to this coach) is a better record than he thought it was going to be after 9 games? How can anyone defend that? When are the training wheels going to be taking off with this program?

"We're a little ahead of where I'd thought we be, to be perfectly honest with you. I didn't think we be 7-2."

Geez, how low are we setting the bar here? We have beaten 5 teams with an RPI 200+. Did he actually expect to lose one of them?

Is anyone unhappy with being 7-2 at this point? By the way, Georgetown is 5-3. I'm happy with our record.

There are some unexpected pluses so far this season and some disappointments as well .

The big pluses so far was that one area of concern has worked out better then most thought and that is who could provide help for Angel. Certainly, at least to me, Ish's improvement to date is far beyond what I expected and along with Nzei has been a plus for us and both have helped improve our front court.Moving Desi to his natural position gives us another threat for other teams to worry about and that makes us a better team.

On the other side our concern about our guard play and whether IW could play the point the way we needed has produced mixed results and Gordon has not provided what we thought he would this year. Anderson was hyped as the answer to add quality and experience at the power position and that hasn't worked out so far.

We are just about where I think most people thought we would be and how we perform in conference still remains unanswered even after watching 9 games.

That was the major point Willard made when saying he thought we were better than expected at this time.

We are 2-1 against potential NCAA tournament-bound teams.

I am very happy at 7 and 2 as well. Because we are young, we don't always play smart and get into stretches where we make poor shot selections and give up too many easy baskets.

We need to get Singh on track with his 3 point shooting.

He certainly could have said it better and been clearer on the point he was trying to make.

This was reported by someone who was in attendance at Willard's post game last night. He posted 13 different quotes/reactions from Willard. I'm not sure what he reported that is out of context.

First of all, KenPom numbers are not RPI. Two totally different rating systems.

Second, I can see a couple ways we'd be worse than 7-2. 1) lose to either Mississippi or Georgia. 2) Beat Long Beach in Charleston, lose to Virginia, lose to Oklahoma State in the third place game.

I'm happy at 7-2. The coach probably shouldn't have said what he said as the words essentially are an admission of doubt and anticipated struggles in Year 6, but I do understand why he said what he said.

Let's clarify a few things.

We are 0-1 against real competition/NCAA teams

I would have been okay with 7-2 if we lost to Virginia & GW

He whose name I shall not speak said he "thought" (that's scary in and of itself) SH was "better than expected at this time". Obviously his expectations were pretty low based on the competition faced to date.Scary. 7-2, no matter who SH played to date, was what any reasonable prison expected. There I go again. Sorry.

Here is the link (the quote is in the 2nd paragraph)......I'll post the quotes below it.

  1. Kevin Willard: "Mike (Nzei) and Ish (Sanogo) have really blown me away. Both those guys have been terrific."

Kevin Willard: "We're a little ahead of where I thought we'd be, to be perfectly honest with you. I didn't think we'd be 7-2."

Kevin Willard: "What he (Whitehead) doesn't get enough credit for is the amount of times he's able to get the ball in the paint."

Kevin Willard on Isaiah Whitehead: "He understands that when he drives, someone's got to step up."

Kevin Willard on Angel Delgado: "I just think he's gotten back to doing what he does best. He's been rebounding the ball terrific."

Kevin Willard on Desi Rodriguez: "Defensively, he's been a difference maker. He helps us."

Kevin Willard on Khadeen Carrington: "He's playing the most minutes of anyone on our team. I've been happy with him and Isaiah."

Kevin Willard on Isaiah Whitehead: "The weird thing is he has bad stretches at the end of games, but I think he's doing a heck of a job."

Kevin Willard: "I thought we handled the zone okay. We've got to get it inside a little bit more, but that's part of the process."

Kevin Willard: "We get a little stagnant at times. We're a very unselfish team, but we get a little slow in the halfcourt offensive end."

Kevin Willard on Desi Rodriguez: "His overall perimeter game has improved dramatically. He knew he was going to make that transition."

Kevin Willard on Desi Rodriguez: "I think the way he's shooting it has really been helping considering it's not one of our strengths."

Kevin Willard on Desi Rodriguez: "He's getting opportunities to get on a break against smaller guys."

He did make the comment about 7-2 but then qualified it by saying I think we're ahead of where I expected because I didn't think we would be as strong at the 4 as we are with Ish and Mike playing so well as young players.

OK. That's fair. And yes Nzei and Ish have been very good so far.

I still have my doubts though if wins/losses, making the NIT, and being in contention for an NCAA bid in the month of February really matters w/this administration this season though.
