As you can see by this article, Mizzou doesn’t have much presense in KCMO. That’s KU country. Gates is trying to establish his program as a rival to KU in the KC area.
The MU - KU rivalry was tremendous until Mizzou left the Big 12 for the SEC. Then the two schools didn’t play each other for a long time until recently. Even when they were both in the Big 12, they never played regular season games in KCMO. And Missouri would complain bitterly whenever the B12 held its post season tournament in Kansas City.
And there was some real historical aspects to the then rivalry. I lived out there for awhile until 2011. Listening to a game on the radio I heard a KU announcer when asked if he would ever root for MU, he said “Never! Missouri was a slave state.”
