Four Pirates had at least 12 kills, led by Matheny's career high 19.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a career-high 19 kills and the Seton Hall women's volleyball team edged DePaul, 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 26-28, 19-17), in a wild, back-and-forth affair on Saturday.

The victory snaps a five-match losing streak for The Hall and improves it to 3-5 in BIG EAST play.

Matheny was brilliant, collected a double-double with a career-high 19 kills, with only five attack errors, and a season-high 17 digs.

In all, four Pirates collected at least 12 kills. Senior Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had 13 kills and three blocks. Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) had career-highs of 12 kills and eight blocks, while freshman Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hawaii) also tallied 12 kills. Roberts-Navarro collected 11 of her 12 kills in the fourth and fifth sets.

SET 1:
Leading 10-8, the Pirates scored five of the next six points, and a kill by Tulli gave them a 15-9 lead and forced a Blue Demons' timeout. Out of the break, DePaul scored six straight to tie the set at 15. After the score was tied three more times, the Pirates took control late. Up 22-20, The Hall scored the last three points of the set, and another kill by Tulli put the stamp on a 25-20 victory. The Hall had a .333 attack percentage in the opening frame, which included 18 kills and only four attack errors.

SET 2:
DePaul came charging out of the gate in the second set, winning the first five points. Blocks by Tulli and Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) cut The Hall's deficit to 9-6, but DePaul took off again and extended its lead to 16-8. Trailing 18-10, Seton Hall went on a 6-1 run to cut its deficit to only three points and force a DePaul timeout. The Pirates closed their deficit to three points two more times, but couldn't get closer as the Blue Demons went on to a 25-20 victory to tie the match.

SET 3:
Trailing 5-4 early, The Hall went on a 6-0 run to grab a 10-5 advantage in set three. DePaul responded with five of the next six points to cut their deficit to 11-10. Leading 16-15, The Hall went on a 7-1 run to take a commanding 23-16 lead. DePaul cut the Pirates' lead to four, but a Matheny kill put the set in the win column, 25-19. The Seton Hall defense held DePaul to a -.029 attack percentage in the third.

SET 4:
Seton Hall led for the majority of the fourth set and a kill by Lucas gave it a 19-15 advantage. DePaul bounced back, however, with five of the next six points to tie the set at 20. From there, the set would tie six more times. The Hall had an opportunity to win the match, up 25-24, but DePaul was able to stave off elimination. The Pirates did the same, down 26-25, but ultimately fell, 28-26, to force a fifth set.

SET 5:
The Pirates had an 8-5 lead as the teams switched sides, but DePaul responded with four in a row to take a 9-8 lead. From there, neither team grabbed a lead greater than one point. In fact, the fifth set featured 12 ties and five lead changes. Seton Hall staved off one match point, down 15-14. The Blue Demons staved off three match points, until The Hall took control with the match tied at 17. A kill by Roberts-Navarro put gave the Pirates an 18-17 lead, and then a block by Tulli and Klungel won the set for The Hall, 19-17.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Matheny had a career-high 19 kills to go with a season-high 17 digs and a .292 attack percentage.
  • Lucas had 13 kills, three digs and three blocks.
  • Tulli tallied a career-high 12 kills, a .333 attack percentage and a career-best eight blocks.
  • Roberts-Navarro notched a career-high 12 kills.
  • Junior Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) collected a season-high 24 digs to go with four assists.
  • Senior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) just missed a double-double with a season-high 30 assists to go with nine digs.
  • Klungel had 28 assists, five kills and five blocks.
  • Seton Hall recorded a .228 attack percentage for the match, while DePaul attacked at .198.
  • The Pirates had 74 kills, while DePaul had 73.
  • The Hall recorded 83 digs, while the Blue Demons had 89.
  • Seton Hall collected 12.0 blocks and DePaul had 13.0.

  • Seton Hall improves to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in the BIG EAST, while DePaul falls to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
  • Tonight's win is the 700th in the history of the program.
  • The Hall is now 21-6 all-time against the Blue Demons.
  • The Pirates improve to 1-1 in five-set matches this season.
  • Matheny's double-double is her fourth of the season and the seventh of her career.
