Lucas collects a career-high 23 kills as the Pirates improve to 5-6 in BIG EAST play.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) collected a career-high 23 kills, while Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had double-doubles and the Seton Hall women's volleyball team outlasted Butler, 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 28-26, 24-26, 15-11) on Friday.

After dropping the opening set, the Pirates rallied to win three of the final four sets to claim its third five-set victory in the last four matches. Two of those wins coming against DePaul and Butler who the Pirates entered tonight tied with for the sixth and final BIG EAST Tournament spot.

Lucas was elite, collecting 23 kills, only two attack errors, a .583 attack percentage and five blocks.

Bucciarelli had a season-high 17 kills to go with 10 digs, three blocks and two aces for her first double-double of the season. Jakubowski notched a team-high 30 assists and 10 digs for her team-best 11th double-double of the year.

SET 1:
An ace by Bucciarelli gave The Hall a 9-4 lead early in set one and forced a Butler timeout. Out of the break, the Bulldogs scored three straight to cut their deficit to two, and from there, neither team grabbed a lead of greater than three points until late. A kill by Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) put The Hall on top, 18-16, but Butler went on an 8-1 run to stun The Hall with a 24-19 advantage. The Bulldogs went on to a 25-19 victory.

SET 2:
The second set saw a vastly different result. The Hall committed only one attack error and jumped out to a 5-1 lead on its way to a 25-15 rout of the Bulldogs. Butler cut their deficit to just two points on there different occasions, but couldn't draw even. Leading 12-10, the Pirates went on a 9-1 run, and an ace by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey), gave them a commanding 21-11 advantage.

SET 3:
In the third set, both teams recorded an attack percentage over .400. The Pirates led throughout the majority of the set, but couldn't pull away. A block by Bucciarelli and Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) gave The Hall it its largest lead of the set, 18-13, but a 7-2 Butler run tied the score at 20. The Pirates staved off three Bulldog set points, with the third, a kill by Matheny tying the set at 26. A kill by Subasili gave The Hall its first set point, and a kill by Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) gave it a 28-26 victory.

SET 4:
The fourth set was the closest of the match with the teams combining for 12 ties and six lead changes. Trailing 14-13, Butler scored four straight points and never trailed again. Facing a Butler set point, 24-21, three straight Bucciarelli kills miraculously tied the score at 24 and sent the Bulldogs to a timeout. Out of the break, however, Butler rebounded and scored the final two points for a 26-24 victory and force a fifth set.

SET 5:
Seton Hall took advantage of Butler mistakes in the final set as the Bulldogs had a .000 attack percentage in the deciding frame. The Hall scored the first four points, forcing an early Butler timeout, but the Bulldogs bounced back to cut the score to 4-3. The Pirates maintained their advantage and an ace by Bucciarelli gave them a 10-6 lead. A block by Subasili put The Hall in match point, 14-10, and a kill by Lucas won the set, 15-11.

Pirates Fall as Xavier Rallies for Four-Set Win​

Madeline Matheny collected her fourth double-double in the last five matches.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a double-double and the Seton Hall women's volleyball team won the opening set, but Xavier rallied for a four-set victory, 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 22-25, 5-25), on Saturday.

The Pirates burst out of the gate with a .371 attack percentage in a convincing first-set victory, but Xavier rallied to win sets, two, three and four. Despite losses, The Hall has consistently played its opponents closely. The Pirates have been swept only twice in 23 matches so far this year.

Matheny collected her fourth double-double in the last five matches with a team-best 13 kills to go with 11 digs.

Senior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) nearly had a double-double, finishing with a team-best 18 assists to go with eight digs and three kills.

SET 1:
Leading 12-11 in the first set, the Pirates went on a 7-2 run to grab a 19-13 advantage. Xavier rallied to cut their deficit to just two points late, 22-20, but The Hall was able to hold them off. A block by Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) and Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) put The Hall in set point, 24-20, and two points later, a kill by Klungel won the set for the Pirates. The Pirates had 15 kills and only two attack errors in the opening frame.

SET 2:
Xavier led wire-to-wire in the second set, scoring the first four points and extending their lead to 13-4. The Hall cut its lead to five points on a block by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) and Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hi.), but couldn't get closer. Xavier responded with a 6-1 burst to grab an insurmountable 22-12 lead. The Musketeers went on for a 25-16 set-two victory.

SET 3:
The Pirates' offense was better in the third set, but ultimately Xavier was able to outlast The Hall. Seton Hall led for the majority of the set, and a kill by Matheny gave it a 15-8 advantage. A kill by Subasili gave The Hall a 22-20 lead, but the Musketeers closed the set with five straight points to stun The Hall for a 25-22 victory. Matheny had six of her team-leading 13 kills in the third set alone.

SET 4:
Gassed after a long, hard-fought third set, The Hall collected only one kill and committed nine attack errors in a 25-5 fourth-set loss.

  • Jakubowski tallied a team-high 18 assists to go with eight digs and three kills.
