Red Bulls Match Recap

HARRISON, N.J. –
A trio of Seton Hall men’s soccer products made their respective first team debuts for the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday (July 22) night. With Konrad Plewa (’14) in the starting XI and Bolu Akinyode (’14) and Victor Manosalvas (’14) coming on as second-half substitutes, the Red Bulls defeated English Premier League Champions Chelsea FC by a score of 4-2 in the 2015 International Champions Cup at Red Bull Arena.

All three former Pirates were members of the Red Bulls Academy prior to their first appearances with the senior club. Plewa played the entirety of the first half in the back four before being subbed off a minute into the second half and helped the Red Bulls limit Chelsea to six shots on target in the match. Akinyode and Manosalvas were both subbed on at the 71-minute mark, helping New York add two more goals to ice the victory.

The trio, all members of the senior class on Seton Hall’s 2014 squad, combined to play in 176 games during their decorated careers in South Orange. Akinyode served as a captain his senior season and posted career-highs in goals (3) and points (8), finishing his career with a 5-4-14 scoring line in 63 matches. Manosalvas led the Pirates with six goals and 15 points in 2014 and went for seven goals, 10 assists and 24 points in his career. Plewa played a career-high 1,479 minutes as a senior to cap a career in which he made 48 starts and logged over 4,000 minutes.

The Red Bulls are no strangers to Seton Hall greats, as Pirate Hall of Famer Sacha Kljestan is an integral member of the side. In 17 starts for New York this season, the United States International has two goals and four assists. The Pirate Blue Summer Caravan will make its final stop at Red Bull Arena for a contest between the Red Bulls and New York City FC, featuring a meet and greet with SHU greats Kljestan and NYC FC’s Jason Hernandez.
