Knicks

I think that’s a good analogy.Thibs had a very successful 5-year run with the Knicks. He helped change the culture and had them on the precipice of making the Finals. He easily could have remained but I don't think the Knicks necessarily made a bad decision here. Its Championship or bust from now on. The key decision is who they hire and how they can address their weaknesses.
They have to change the way they play on both sides of the ball and Thibs would just be running back the same way and hoping it is enough. Brunson and Towns are the 2 franchise players but they are an imperfect pair on both ends of the floor. Both are below average defenders and they both tend to be very ball dominant offensively. They need more from Bridges who was disappointing as the 3rd option.
And lastly, Thibs works his starters more than anyone. Knicks were dead last in bench minutes and bench points. They need to get deeper and take some miles off the starters.
This reminds me a little of the Yankees firing Buck Showalter after 2 great seasons in 94 and 95. He was key in bringing the Yanks back from oblivion and installing a winning culture. I was shocked and angry at the time but Torre was everything they needed.
Another is Rick Carlisle himself. He did well in Detroit earlier in his career, only to get fired for Larry Brown who elevated the Pistons to that final level.
