Danny having none of it.

If you listed to Val this week on the CBS Inside College Basketball podcast, you would be livid. The Butler AD was the Big East rep in the room who apparently didn’t pound the table enough for us. She said that SHU, STJ and Providence probably all split votes and we needed someone to step up and say ‘hey, the BE really deserves a 4th team and we need to pick one of these’. She basically said that they couldn’t kill the committee publicly because one of their AD’s is on it.

Don’t get me started on her response to UCONN and the Big 12 btw. She couldn’t come off as a weaker leader right now between these two issues…
C ‘mon. Everyone knew the deal with UCONN and the BE presidents still voted to bring them into the league. It’s been a mutually beneficial relationship and transactional on both sides.

Harris campaign making a mistake?

I didn’t see it, but have heard excerpts of the CNN Town Hall, which the CNN panel panned. Axelrod nailed it…she gets a question she can’t answer and she goes word salad. Bash said she failed to close the deal.

Only thing she has going for her now is the young female vote which could help her win. Don’t see any other demo that is moving toward her.
Hard to believe someone who has no clue what she’s doing actually served as our VP. The Democratic Party has done incredible damage to their brand having Kamala front and center. Should scare the hell out of everyone to have her serve as our President. I understand people voting for anyone other than Trump but at least get someone who can answer a question and speak intelligently. Could you possibly have a worse candidate, my apologies to anyone voting for her.

Harris campaign making a mistake?

Hopefully they don’t burn the country down and deny the election results if she loses.

Shows how lazy and disorganized her campaign is, the Democratic Party runs these campaigns but just hard to hide all her shortcomings. For 3 1/2 years the media and 80% of the people thought KH was a mistake and suddenly all of that changed. Problem is Kamala like Trump is who she is. Dems really had no choice but to throw her out there and try to cover for her. She should have accepted the invitation from Joe Rogan but cannot face a 1 hour interview never mind 3 hours that Trump is slated for. Rogan would press her to answer the questions she draws blanks on. Maybe Bruce and Taylor can save her the election. Bruce is wasting his time but the Taylor fans could change their minds and vote.

Harris losing and getting desperate witness bringing out old John Kelly again, hitler talk etc You are telegraphing you are in trouble.

About a month ago I suggested that it felt like she was winning the key demographics in PA and that she would win in a close but comfortable margin. She has given that all away and although she might still win, it’s a toss up and the desperation heaves at Trump are making it worse.

Wheeling out John Kelly with the “Hitler references” two weeks before the election and pounding on it? Where has he been for the last year since the primaries started?

I know she’s been the candidate for less than 100 days but the answers to the most basic questions her team should have anticipated have been poor.
- What would you have done differently than Biden?
- When did you notice Biden’s decline?
- Why didn’t you address the border issues sooner?

Hope Springs Eternal from the Garden at Big East Basketball Media Day

Hope Springs Eternal from the Garden at Big East Basketball Media Day

by JD Walker

October in New York City during the “Sports equinox” of all of the sports leagues playing at the same time is a hopeful, yet still mildly anxious place. The start of a new college basketball season brings hope, and the official kickoff party is at Madison Square Garden for Big East Media Day. It’s easy to have hope and excitement when you arrive in Manhattan from New Jersey coming out from underground tunnels. My photographer Ernesto and I emerged from Jackie Gleason’s sweaty butthole better known as the Port Authority Bus Terminal Wednesday morning and walked a few blocks south to “The Mecca” to see the Seton Hall Pirates and the ten other Big East teams with their coaches and a handful of players to soak in the festivities for the upcoming season.

The first sight right before walking out to the main floor of MSG was sandwich boards with the preseason coaches poll and player honors for the men’s and women’s teams. Pirate fans were immediately slapped in the face, with the men’s coaches poll showing UConn at the top as they should be, and Seton Hall in 10th, one point behind the Georgetown Cooleys and above only the Chicago Bottom Feeders of DePaul. Rodney Dangerfield’s timeless “No respect” rant played in my head for a few minutes, then I moved on.

The Pirates prove the polls wrong most years anyway so who cares? With only three returning players from Seton Hall’s 2024 NIT Championship team, only two of whom played significant minutes and only one starter, skepticism is understandable to a degree, but 10th? Oh well, time to prove them wrong again.

Those two returning contributors, Isaiah Coleman and Dylan Addae-Wusu were at the table representing the team along with coach Shaheen Holloway floating around since he rarely sits or stands still for very long. Most of the quotes were typical boilerplate stuff but at least the messaging is consistent and everyone is on the same page.

Question: How does it feel stepping into a leadership position this season?

Dylan (aka “Dills”): “As a competitor, you can’t ask for nothing better than that, to go out and compete so that’s the fun part”

Isaiah (aka “Zay”): “Day in and day out it’s just work. Every game is a game, score is 0-0 at the start, we see who wins after that.

I asked Coleman about the practices and Sha’s intensity with the team:

Zay: “Every day, that pushes us to be 110. We see him at 100 that makes us want to go more.”

Q: How has the team culture evolved or developed despite all the turnover?

Dylan: “As a team culture, the Seton Hall culture is grit, fight, and competitive nature. Coach says Dedication, Discipline, and Determination, that stays within the program. No matter the team, the group of guys, that’s the culture within the school. It’s still the same, it means the same from Coach Sha.”

Zay: “Coaching stays the same but it gets better…like Dills just said, the 3 D’s Determination, Dedication, Discipline, you got to have them to play for Seton Hall.”

The players left it to their coach to talk about the rankings and disrespect when the pack of reporters asked him about it. Sha’s quotes are by way of Jaden Daly of Daly Dose of Hoops, because I couldn’t even get anywhere close enough to the press scrums to ask a question other than saying hello and good luck to him for 30 seconds right before he was whisked away to the FS1 TV set staged perfectly on the MSG court. Here are a few on the polls and his team which are exactly what you would expect from Sha:

On Seton Hall being picked 10th in the Big East:

“I’m intrigued by them. The reason why I’m intrigued by them is that we know where I want to be right now, but I think this team’s got a really good ceiling. I mean, what do you want me to say? It is what it is, brother. I don’t know. People have time to sit around and pick other people’s teams, but I’m not worried about nobody else. I don’t do it, I let my assistant coaches do it, to tell you the truth. It doesn’t matter either way for me. You know me, I don’t really care if we’re first, we’re last, I don’t care.”

On the opportunity to develop his team:

“I mean, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t really care about the rankings or stuff like that. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s preseason. I just care about my team, but if you know me, you know my teams, we get better as the year goes on. So right now, I’m happy where we are, but I think we’re gonna be really good.”

Olympic Champion and former Pro Wrestler Kurt Angle preached about the three I’s of Intelligence, Integrity, and Intensity. We already have Sha’s three D’s of Determination, Dedication, Discipline. Throw in all those letters and these Pirates will easily shrug off that useless #10 ranking this season just like they did the useless #8 preseason ranking and the middle finger from the NCAA Selection Committee to run to a 4th place Big East finish and an NIT Championship. We don’t know yet where these Pirates will finish but I can say with confidence I don’t see any planet where these Pirates finish 10th.

More to come over the next few days:
  • Videos of additional interviews with Pirates Women’s basketball coach Tony Bozzella and players Faith Masonius and Savannah Catalon.
  • Video Interviews with Seton Hall AD Bryan Felt, Broadcasting legend and basketball lifer Bill Raftery, Assorted musings from folks around the Big East, and more!

Willard would say the same thing about the BE if he were still here. Why would you expect him to say anything different? Why would you expect any major D1 coach to say different, for that matter? Imagine how Maryland fans and supporters would feel if he said "Well, yeah. Big East is easily the best." Or, closer to home, would you have appreciated him going on record that the ACC or Big Ten was the best while he was head coach here? That's just showing allegiance to your conference and to the people that cut your paycheck, along with common sense for that matter.
Because he shouldn’t say it if Izzo ain’t saying it.

Of course I was. I thought it was obvious.

EDIT: I can see why, based on what was visible in the quoted post (unless you expanded it), that it seemed like I was referencing Danny. But if you read the linked piece, there is only one quote so completely preposterous, and the things about that coach being a hanger-on could have only referred to one coach in the story. And it isn't the ones with the natties.
Got it. You were right I just looked at the quote and not the article.

"We (the Big East) got buried by the Committee last year that was clear once the Tournament started based on those results.

“I don’t know if we have a strong enough voice in that room, I don’t know who’s representing us in that room this year in the Big East. "

This has to Val's #1 focus now that the media deal is done. She needs to be all over this. The conference lost out on millions by only getting 3 teams invited. UConn carried the BE the last 2 years but the conference made $8 Million less from the tourney in 2024 than 2023. We badly need that revenue.

Despite UConn's dominance, the BE was 5th in NCAA revenue, $8-12 Million behind each of the 'P4' conferences. We made only $2M more than the Mountain West and Pac12.

Onward Setonia X Shinola - NIL End of Season Gift

Love the watch, but just can't swing that for myself right now with the holidays coming - especially after I just shelled out for the brick for my family. That said, I purchased a bag of Pirate's Roast (which arrived today!), the Silk Road ornament, and will be going to Magnify this weekend to get some Pirates Pils (provided they still have some by then).

Nice to have a variety of offerings at different price points.
