Seton Hall drops opening game in BIG EAST play, late attacking chances fall short
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – No. 8 Seton Hall men's soccer lost 1-0 against Providence, dropping its opening game of BIG EAST play for the season.
The unbeaten Pirates found themselves down a goal at the half, but fought back with multiple attacking chances in the second half. The Hall earned multiple dangerous free kicks, four corner kicks and drew a late penalty off an aggressive chance by
Jack Kossoudji (Columbus, Ohio). None of them found the back of the net, however, resulting in a 1-0 defeat for the Pirates.
With the loss, The Hall drops to 6-1-0 on the season and is 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Providence held possession in the first half, but Seton Hall countered with their physicality. The Pirates countered their adversary's early aggression with seven fouls and two yellow cards, but the Friars' broke the scoreless tie. In the 22nd minute, Providence's Rodrigo Vaza combined with two teammates to land a shot inside the far post of the goal while streaking into the box.
In the second half, the Pirates, down a goal, upped their offensive pressure and found their rhythm. In the 71st minute, a
Jared Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) service into the box nearly found its way into the goal off of a streaking Pirate's head, but Friars' goalie Lukas Burns saved the equalizing opportunity.
In the 84th minute,
Jack Kossoudji drew a penalty kick after being fouled in the penalty box.
Virgil Dall'Agnol (Grenoble, France) took to the spot for the attempt, but the conversion was not successful. Further attempts to find the equalizing goal fell flat, resulting in a 1-0 loss.
