Pirates Tripped Up At No. 14 Marquette

Box

Milwaukee, Wis. - Jaden Bediako (Brampton, Ontario) had a season-high 18 points and eight rebounds and Seton Hall trailed by only one at halftime but No. 14 Marquette ultimately pulled away as the Pirates fell to the Golden Eagles on the road, 75-57, on Saturday afternoon.

Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) had a near double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates (13-8, 6-4 BIG EAST) who were without starting point guard Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for the second consecutive game.

How It Happened

The Golden Eagles went into the locker room up 30-29 despite the Pirates holding on to the lead for more than 18 minutes in the first half. Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) opened the scoring with a running jumper and Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg, Va.) followed with a runner of his own that gave the Pirates a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back threes by Dylan Addae-Wusu (Bronx, N.Y.) extended Seton Hall's lead to 10-3 at 17:13 in the first.

Bediako held things down for the Pirates down the stretch in the first 20 minutes. With 5:44 left before halftime, Marquette made it a two-point game at 21-19 but the Pirate made two stops defensively and Bediako converted back-to-back buckets that pushed Seton Hall's lead back to six, 25-19. After another Bediako layup that made it 27-24 with 2:39 left, the Golden Eagles closed the first half on a 6-2 run that gave them a one-point lead at the half

Marquette opened the second half on a 10-2 run that extended their lead to 40-31 and it forced Seton Hall to call a timeout. With the Golden Eagles up by their largest lead at 12, 45-33, with 16:14 left, the Pirates responded with an 8-1 run that cut their deficit to five, 46-51, and it forced Marquette to use a timeout. Five would be as close as The Hall would get though. Later, a pair of made free throws by Davis with 10:41 to go in regulation got the Pirates within striking distance at 53-45 but an 8-0 Marquette run gave itself a 16-point lead, 61-45, with under eight minutes left that helped put the game out of reach.

Inside The Box Score

  • Seton Hall had a perfect day from the free-throw line going 12-of-12.
  • The Pirates out rebounded Marquette by three, 32-29, and they had a plus-two advantage on the offensive boards, 12-10.
  • The Pirates forced 10 turnovers but had 17 turnovers of their own.
  • Both teams scored 15 points off of the turnovers that they forced and the Pirates had an 18-13 edge in second-chance points.
News & Notes

  • Bediako finished one-point shy of tying his career high with his 18-point performance.
  • The last time Seton Hall went perfect from the line with a minimum of 12 attempts was at Xavier on Dec. 30, 2020 when the Pirates went 14-of-14 from the free-throw line.
  • Davis has now scored in double-figures in each of the last 11 games.
  • Coleman played a career-high 32 minutes
  • Bediako now has 12 double-figure scoring games this season after posting 18 in his previous four collegiate seasons.

Up Next

The Pirates will next hit the road to take on DePaul on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern. The game will be televised on FS1 and can be heard on the Seton Hall Basketball Radio Network via the SHU Pirates Mobile App, SHUPirates.com, SiriusXM and the Varsity Network.

OT: Baseball HOF

I feel this has become so watered down over the last decade. Adrian Beltre and Todd Helton? Really? Beltre has the magic number of 3,000 hits but that's partially because he played 21 seasons. He never won an MVP award and was only an all-star in just four of those 21 years. Never won a World Series and only hit .261 in 28 postseason games. Never once did I watch him play and think future HOFer.

Helton has the great career batting average but didn't come close to getting 3,000 hits. He had a great 4-5 year stretch but nothing else really jumps off the page at you. And then of course there is the Colorado effect. Hit only .211 in a very limited postseason career.

This Next One Matters

I think we have to keep some perspective right now. Without Richmond it was going to be tough at Marquette. They are a very good team with interesting components. It was disappointing how the team performed in the second half. What's done is done. The NEXT ONE is such an important game. Of course, they changed their coach right before we get to them. DePaul on the road and Providence at home have become our nemesis opponents.

The Richmond situation is tricky and sensitive. What I would say is if there is any way he can be in uniform it would be a big lift to the team. Could he play some minutes? You don't even have to start him. If not, this team better play this game like it's an NCAA Tournament game. NO WAY can they let Depaul get comfortable. So, the starters have to play pissed off and with focus.

Dawes was due for an off-shooting game. No issues with a guy who put up 20+ points in the proceeding 3 games. Sha has to shorten that rotation for this one. Playing in front of 18,000 at Marquette was intimidating for our reserves and that's understandable. However, if Sha puts them on the court they need to play with confidence and focus. Really for the rest of the season. We worry about who stays and who goes after the campaign concludes.

Why mass subs?

Shaheen, you complain about our bench but then repeat same mistakes.

Give our starters breathers one player at a time. Mass subs kill our momentum. We lost the Providence game because of it and may lose this one as well.

Having 3 or more bench players in at same time is killing us. If there are 4 or at least 3 other starters in, they can at least attempt to keep the game stable and not have as many loose ends ie the less experience (not as good) bench players all in together.
