South Orange, N.J. - The No. 8 ranked Seton Hall men's soccer looks to rebound from its first loss of the season when Lehigh travels to Owen T. Carroll Field Tuesday at 6:56 p.m. This is the final game of non-conference play for the Pirates this season.

This is the 6th all-time meeting between the two teams, the most recent of which occurred in 2019.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Seton Hall and Lehigh last met on September 14, 2019, in an early-season affair. The Pirates and Mountain Hawks played a scoreless first half in which Eden O'Leary and Vittorio Argeri were unable to convert their first half goal chances. In the 50th minute, Lehigh's Josh Luchini blasted a rebounding corner kick past the goalkeeper to put the Mountain Hawks up 1-0. The Pirates only had one shot on goal the remaining 40 minutes, ending the match in a 1-0 loss.
  • This is the 6th meeting between the two programs, the first of which came in 1996.
  • Seton Hall is 2-3-0 all-time against Lehigh, with a 1-2-0 record in their last three meetings.
PIRATES OPEN BIG EAST PLAY WITH LOSS
  • On Friday, the Pirates visited Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium to play Providence in the first game of BIG EAST play for the season. The Pirates fell shorts in the match, losing 1-0.
  • In the 71st minute, a Jared Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) service into the box nearly found its way into the goal off of a streaking Pirate's head, but Friars' goalie saved the equalizing opportunity.
  • In the 84th minute, Jack Kossoudji drew a penalty kick after being fouled in the penalty box. Virgil Dall'Agnol (Grenoble, France) took to the spot for the attempt, but the conversion was not successful.
  • Seton Hall is now 14-19-7 all-time against Providence.
PIRATES RANKED INSIDE TOP 10
  • Seton Hall is ranked No. 8 in the nation in the Sept. 17 United Soccer Coaches top-25, up five spots from their ranking a week prior. Their ranking is the highest they have held during a non-abbreviated season since the 2002 season when they received the No. 6 spot in the September 2, 2002 poll.
  • In head coach Andreas Lindberg's tenure, Seton Hall appeared in the United Soccer Coaches top-25 seven times during the 2020 season, reaching as high as No. 6. Then Seton Hall spent four weeks in the national rankings during 2021.
  • The Pirates are one of two BIG EAST teams in the current top-25, joining No. 25 University of Connecticut.
KOSSOUDJI & KAUSCHKE HONORED BY BIG EAST
  • Jack Kossoudji, a graduate transfer from Capital University, was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Kossoudji began the week by assisting on what proved to be the game-winning goal, in Seton Hall's 3-1 road win at Rutgers. Against Harvard, Kossoudji logged an assist and scored the game-winning goal in The Hall's 3-2 victory over the Crimson.
  • Til Kauschke, freshman midfielder from Hamburg, Germany, was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Early in the week, Kauschke provided an assist in The Hall's 3-1 victory over Rutgers. He followed that up with second goal of the season in the team's 3-2 win over Harvard.

Utah St. accepts invite to become 7th member of rebuilding Pac-12

Pete Thamel, ESPN

Utah State has accepted an invitation to join the Pac-12 and become the newly formatted conference's seventh member, sources told ESPN on Monday night.

The move comes amid a dizzying day of realignment that saw the Pac-12's interest in a handful of AAC schools get rebuffed, the Mountain West expected to retain a commitment from key member Air Force and UNLV's decision become uncertain after its commitment to the MWC earlier in the day was not formalized.

Utah State's reported acceptance would make it the fifth school from the Mountain West to join Oregon State and Washington State in the rebuilding Pac-12. Utah State would join Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State, who have announced they are going to the league.

Utah State has a solid football program, having won a Mountain West championship in 2021. Utah State has reached 11 bowl games since 2011 and has 16 bowl appearances in its history. It has been in the Mountain West since 2013.

Utah State also is an accomplished basketball school, as it has 24 men's NCAA tournament appearances in its history. That includes appearances in four of the past five tournaments. (Those four took place over six years, and the Aggies were 26-8 in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the tournament.)

Utah State emerged as a candidate late in a hectic day in which the Pac-12 attempted to secure its future.

The departure from the Mountain West leaves that league with seven schools, which means it will need to make one addition to remain an official conference.

ESPN's Kyle Bonagura contributed to this report.

Pirates Draw WIth Villanova In BIG EAST Opener, 0-0

South Orange, N.J. -- The Seton Hall women's soccer team played Villanova to a scoreless draw in its BIG EAST opener on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.

The Pirates (3-5-2, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Georgetown for a 4 p.m. contest. Before Sunday's game, Seton Hall women's soccer celebrated the 30th season of the program by welcoming back alumnae and former coaches. Also present were members of the first team in 1994 and its head coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley, who led Seton Hall to five BIG EAST Tournament appearances.

How It Happened

In a game between two evenly matched sides with similar playing styles, Villanova finished with an 8-1 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. Anna Prawer (London, England) and Avery Strohecker (Riding, Va.) combined to post a shutout effort in goal with Prawer playing between the pipes for the first 45 minutes followed by Strohecker in the second half. Arguably the best chance of the game from either side came in the 34th minute when Prawer found herself one-on-one with a Villanova forward. The striker pushed a shot toward goal but it was ultimately stopped by a sliding Prawer.

The Pirates controlled possession in the early part of the second half where Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) put a shot on target but was saved. The Hall's backline prevented the Wildcats from taking a shot in the second half until nearly 20 minutes in back-to-back shots were stopped by Strohecker. Despite the stronger play after halftime, the Pirates couldn't come up with a score and settled for a point in their first league contest of the 2024 season.

Six of Seton Hall's starting 11 played the full 90 minutes; Tavana, Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany), Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) Lily Camacho (Summit, N.J.), Kailey McCormich (Mineola, N.Y.) and Kylie Ray (Hampden, Mass.).

Daytona Beach, Fla. - Junior Honey Strosnider (Fairfield, Pa.) ran a 18:45.8 to cross the finish line first and lead the Seton Hall women's cross country team to winning the 2024 Embry-Riddle Cross Country Classic Saturday morning. This was the second team title for the Pirates in as many weeks.

Strosnider is enjoying a great start to the 2024 season, placing as the top Pirate finisher in all four races. This was her second individual title in as many weeks.

Seton Hall had five top-10 finishers which made the difference in winning the team championship. The Pirates had 24 points as a team, while event host Embry-Riddle had 39 points.

Senior Julia Smith (Pittsgrove, N.J.), finished fourth with a time of 19:17.9, while sophomore Caitlin Fahy (Ringwood, N.J.) quickly followed her in fifth place with a time of 19:18.6. Sophomore Paige Quigley (Sacramento, Calif.) posted a time of 19:23.5, finishing sixth.

Good Summary of Seton Hall

The Pirates return fifth-year guard Dylan Addae-Wusu and star freshman Isaiah Coleman, but Holloway and his staff went big in the portal by adding eight transfers, including guards Garwey Dual (Providence), Zion Harmon (Bethune-Cookman), Chaunce Jenkins (ODU), wing Scotty Middleton (Ohio State) and forwards Prince Aligbi (Boston College), Gus Yalden (Wisconsin) and Yacine Toumi (Evansville) and big man Emmanuel Okorafor (Louisville).

There’s no question Holloway can coach, but this year will be defined by how much he can get his new players to buy into his defense-first philosophy and jell.

“This year I wanted to bring in guys that could f***ing compete,” Holloway said this summer. “My mindset was I’m bringing in a bunch of guys that could play and compete and I think that brings the best out of a team.”

Asked what he was looking for from the portal, Holloway said, “I wanted more guys that could play multiple spots. I wanted more size as far as at the guards’ spot. I wanted more guys that could get to the basket. I wanted some shooters. I just wanted a team where I could play 10-11 guys, where I don’t have to play one guy 30-35 minutes.”
