2024-25 Big East Coaches Poll

It’s all a crapshoot. What teams are proven at this point? Some look better on paper but chemistry is definitely a factor. I like our chances to finish in the top 5 mainly due the Sha.
This.

Wow. Maybe Sha rubs people the wrong way and they’re sticking it to him? No way his coaching should get this level of disrespect
I don’t think it’s that deep but idk. I think they just go surface level really don’t dig. We don’t market, no hype, we don’t even open a practice to the media, we don’t get on radars, our coach isn’t promoting exhibitions nor are they televised, we lose top players every year to the portal and replace them with mid major guys or power conf back-ups, we’re a perpetual afterthought. Sha likes this approach; wants to be in the weeds.

It’s who we are. But it’s also great when we outperform this and have the poll dragged up every game as a talking point when we get into NCAAT contention. 👏👍

This board loves Shaheen, but not much from the BE coaches.
We always do well coming from off the pace. Willard was a master of this, too.

No disrespect for Kalkbrenner, but at the very least he and Karaban should be co COY.

I wonder if Richmond will be first-team at season's end? I bet he is not.
I must be missing something with Karaban. I don't even think he is first team big east player. Maybe based on all the talent on UCONN, i have overlooked him, but i don't see it.

I’m lower on Marquette, UConn and Creighton. I’m higher on SJU, Xavier and SHU.

Some bold takes from me:

1. Seton Hall will finish 5th or better
2. Xavier or St. John’s will win the league
3. Deivon Smith will be conference POY
4. UConn will finish 5th or worse
5. DePaul will win 6 or more league games
6. Georgetown will finish DFL (not a bold take, I guess)

Don’t see it either. I honestly don’t love this UConn team, although it’s hard to bet against their coaching staff. Crazy that none of the assistants moved on to a head gig.

St John’s hype is similar to the Jets. Pre season speculation based on washed up legends who haven’t accomplished squat the past few years.

There really aren't many objective reasons to rank Seton Hall better than 9th or 10th. This sounds right to me.

Being 10th just tells me the Big East is loaded yet again this year. Top 6 should easily be in the tournament with the 7 and 8 team on the bubble. Of course, not factoring the NCAA bias that will prefer the 11th and 12th Big “10” or ACC state school to get in.

Sha comments are pretty clear, he is doing the best he can with the NIL that he has to work with. That is clearly not enough which we all know. Univ really needs to look to hire a GM for the athletic department to work on this part -- Sha needs to coach vs dealing with the agents etc. Plus we need someone else in there that can help increase the NIL - understand we have a few guys working on this and have increased but clearly we are behind and time is running out. If we do not make a major change in NIL funding or there is not legislation to manage it, then Sha will be off to other places in a year or two. I will not blame him either - he tried but not just going to happen here. Hopefully our new President is up and ready to go with all this

Last year at this time we had 3 established guards who could outplay anyone on any given night. But we had forwards who had terrible HS rankings and transfers who no high major programs wanted. Oh yeah, and no quality bench players. So I could understand the 8th preseason ranking.
This year we have a slew of highly ranked and highly athletic players at every position. The only issue I see is youth and inexperience. But I am much more excited about this team than I was last year at this time.

For what it's worth, I'll give you the outsiders opinion on Holloway. Sha is a good coach and he may turn out to be an excellent one. The job he did last year was really impressive.

I took his "wait till the end of the year" comment as being a statement of confidence. He knows that by the end of the year his teams are more than the sum of their parts and he doesn't give a crap about what outsiders think about them today.

I'm with you on this, but the constant turnover in basketball is not good for a coach like Sha. It took him 2 years to develop Richmond, Dawes and Dre. We're in year 1 for the overwhelming majority of these guys who may not be as talented as those guys. Maybe that group didn't buy in soon enough and why it took 2 years, I don't know. I believe no doubt this team in March will be exponentially better. The question is will we be like last year with a really slow start and will we be good enough within 4 months to be a top 5 team in this conference.

Who knows, maybe a problem last year was that a kid could close out with his hands in his pocket and watch a loose ball roll by and not be given a seat and the nastiest damned look he has ever seen from his coach, or a shooter could miss all night but shoot them all game, cause there was not a trusted option on the bench.

Maybe we looked like crap to start the season cause of the stars. Maybe if Dr Bill's man didnt come in and save our ass in the Monmouth game, after the RU game and and the dreadful first have of Monmouth, then they would have followed the same tune a little longer. A staff of Auerback Riley and Holtzman could not improve a team asmuch in a week as our team improved. They had it in them. They knew what to do but they didnt make it happen. We were uninspiring in the OOC P5 games, we played a putrid game vs RU on 12/9, slipped by Monmouth on 12/12, then 8 days later we kicked Uconn's butt. The difference was mental, buy in. The question is why did it take so long?

The new system for college hoops/nil is what it is. It is amazing that it has come to this. But that is where we are at.

But SHU hoops is starting soon. Few things better than that.

I agree. You need a mix of kids who will deliver today and some you can develop. The problem is that there are now schools waiting to pick off kids who show upside. One of the best parts of college basketball, watching a kid develop over four years, seems like it's becoming increasingly unlikely.

Still, Sha has shown that kids get better over the course of the year with him. I think that helps him. Ultimately, though it will become increasingly difficult to play competitive basketball without a huge NIL war chest. I think that's sad, but true.

We seem to have more depth but nowhere near the top line talent of last year. I don’t know what to expect. I think there’s a lot of hidden talent and we’ll be 500 in the BE. Surprise a couple teams and end up on the Bubble.

Sight unseen I think this will be a better defensive team. More athletic, more longer guards and wings, and deeper. Almost felt the big 3 1/2 played off a bit in first halfs of games to conserve energy and fouls.

We have an almost entirely new roster filled with mostly young and inexperienced players. Most of the experienced players have spent their careers playing for mid and low-major schools.

In a world where having older and more experienced players is a huge advantage, there is little to suggest -- on paper -- that this is a top five BE team in October.

That doesn't mean we won't or can't finish top five or six. But as some of us have said for some time, there are a lot of question marks on this roster. Many of them will have to hit for this team to do well and it's no given that will happen.
