Aguilar, Pirates Claim Titles at UAlbany Invitational

DELMAR, N.Y. – In only her third collegiate tournament, freshman Marta Aguilar (Casaras Malaga, Spain) claimed the individual co-championship and lifted the Seton Hall women's golf team to the team title at the UAlbany Great Danes Invitational on Sunday.

Aguliar started the day three strokes behind a pair of individual leaders, but had two birdies, 10 pars and an eagle on the par-5, No. 9 hole, to fuel a 1-over-par, 71, in the final round. Her remarkable second-round performance enabled her tie Boston University's Christy Chen for the individual championship.

Aguilar is the first Seton Hall women's golfer to claim at least a share of a tournament's individual crown since Mia Kness won the William & Mary Intercollegiate on March 19, 2019.

Seton Hall had the second-best round in the field today, an 18-over-par, 298, which enabled it to jump over two teams to win the team title by just one stroke over Boston University. For the tournament, The Hall was 41-over-par with a 303-298-601. The Pirates' lone BIG EAST competition, St. John's, finished fifth, 10 strokes off the lead.

It's The Hall's first team victory since taking home the championship at the St. John's Invitational on April 11, 2023.

Senior Ana Sarrias Pro (Cadiz, Spain) was even-par on the back nine to power a 4-over-par, 74, in round two. She collected her fourth career top-10 finish by tying for eighth place with an 11-over-par, 77-74-151.

Freshman Amelie Gras (Elancourt, France) was consistent throughout the two-day event, and shot a second-consecutive 5-over-par, 75. For the tournament, she tied for sixth place with a 10-over-par, 75-75-150.

Junior Anne-Sofie Ekman (Copenhagen, Denmark) had 12 pars on Sunday to fuel an 8-over-par, 78. She too, was consisted throughout the weekend, finishing with a 16-over-par, 78-78-156.

Sophomore Kasumi Tran (Swansea, Wales) rounded out the Pirates' lineup with a 10-over-par, 80, in round two. For the event, she was 17-over-par with a 77-80-157.

THE COURSE
Normanside Country Club opened its golf course in 1927. The course was designed by William Harries. During its many years of play, it has hosted many New York State Golf Association and United States Golf Association events. Notable among them are the 1952 Empire State open and the 1996 NYSGA Mid-Amateur Championship and the 2003 & 2008 NYS Senior Amateur Championship. Normanside has also served as a qualifying site for state and national events.

THE FIELD
In addition to Seton Hall and host UAlbany, the field was comprised of 10 other teams including: Boston University, Fairfield, FDU, Lehigh, Merrimack, Navy, Niagara, Sacred Heart and Siena. Also joining the field is BIG EAST rival St. John's.

Seton Hall will wrap up the 2024 fall season with three rounds of golf at the Delaware Lady Blue Hen Invitational, Oct. 19-20, at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

I knew that the soccer team was heavily international, but I didn't realize that is how the golf team is constructed too.
