And Here It Is

The man who engineered Saint Peter’s miracle run to the Elite Eight in 2022 finally has a state-of-the-art practice facility now in South Orange, but few players care about that stuff anymore. They want to get paid.

“You know I’ve got to be careful with how I answer that,” Holloway said when asked about the team-building resources — i.e., player salaries — that he has available. “I have to use what I have and make the best of it. I never said it was going to be easy.”

Yep. 25 years too late and now it sounds like Sha is getting tired of the lack of money. We’re cooked.

Im kinda sick of our coach’s bringing up excuses with press referring to salaries of players…we lost to momouth by 12. Lost to fordum and Hofstra….barely beat st Peters.

What is the common theme here, we have way more money for salary available than those schools. Stop it Sha.

Cant both things be absolutely true?

We have no business losing those three games.

We don't have enough money to be consistently competitive in the P5 world?

I hope #2 is not correct, but I will be pleasantly shocked if time proves it wrong.

Almost ever coach who loses or has issues echos the same sentiments..maybe more vague or in different words but it’s just part of coach speak now

Everyone blames their resources and NIL

I mean Sha is probably in the top 10 percentile of have legit gripe but they all do this now

Is the issue how much money we have or how we use what we've got?

By some accounts, it's estimated we're around $2M (correct me if I'm wrong). Do you spread $2M across 10 players or across 2-3?

I coached youth sports, and I can tell you having even one ringer can elevate a team. 2-3 really solid players with a supporting cast is a much better prospect these days IMHO.

I agree they are separate things.

Unfortunately, he consistently uses this excuse now for his team playing poorly against lesser NIL teams. Wait till we play real nIL deep teams!

To me has done a poor job and he is blaming Seton Hall’s NIL chest with the media. This excuse works better when losing to team with more NIL at least.

We aren’t even at #2 yet except double digit loss against Vandy.

Not happy with the coach deflecting blame. This is going to be (already is?) an awful season.

Disagree with your last statement. He has no legit gripe with losing to multiple 300 NET teams at home with 10 times the NIL budget of the teams he lost to.

I agree with your premise that you need to have 2-3 players to build around. I also believe that for Sha, continuity and player leadership are huge. Even more so than the average coach because of his intensity and personality. They can be a shock to new players and you need a strong-minded experienced leader(s) to help the new players adjust.

For those reasons I felt we should have gone all out to keep one of Dre or KR, knowing we'd never keep both. I felt Dre was more realistic as the combo of Pitino and Repole would keep raising their offer in a Steve Cohen-like way. Kadary is much more valuable as a versatile PG but Dre has great work ethic and leadership qualities.

I don't believe we had close to $2M to spend but no one will discuss actual figures. Let's say we had $1.5m and roughly half of that would have kept Dre, you would likely have had to do without about 6 players from the current roster, at least 4 of which are in the rotation.

By my best guesstimate (just an educated guess) our players fall in 1 of 3 tiers with regard to how much NIL they got. To afford Dre you'd have to lose at least 2 players from each tier to cover Dre and leave a minimal amount for 5 replacements. It may be closer to 3 players from Tier 1

Tier 1
Dylan
Coleman
Dual
Middleton
Chaunce

Tier 2
Toumi
Aligbe
Okorafor

Tier 3
Gus
Harmon
Tubek
Godswill
Felton

Would we be better off with Dre? Yes, no doubt but we'd have a much weaker roster around him than we do now. There's no easy answers when working with a very small bbudget. We just have to be better at everything.

We have to become better recruiters, better at identifying traits that can work in Sha's system. Better at researching injuries or other potential issues with transfers. Find some veteran guys that play tough and have some skills but may lack the size. There are plenty of skilled but undersized guards that could help us. Get a hard-nosed, physical undersized 6'7" big. Get some tough players from Jersey and NYC!! Thats who we are and we have only 1 guy on the roster who is local! Sha took a shot with many guys who have the physical traits but lack the skills or the mindset or the experience.

And Sha needs to look at changing his offense and how he's preparing his teams in the summer. In 3 years he's made a lot of excuses why his teams didn't have good offseasons and it's a direct correlation to poor OOC seasons.

I can't disagree with a lot of what he says. The good thing is that this absolute dope has proclaimed the rivalry dead on numerous occasions - and has been wrong every time.
I still remember when they got Mike Rosario and he published a story basically saying we'd never beat them again. I'd say that one aged like milk but it would be an insult to the shelf life of milk.

Think he re-wrote that article when Rice was beating Willard at the beginning of his tenure.

I would maybe say Harmon might fall into tier 1 because he’s an upperclassman and was an all conference player but in a weak conference. I would say get rid of Dual, Aligbe, Harmon. I would also say get rid of Okorafor and use the extra to get a mid major or even d2 natural PG who can shoot. Chaunce, Dylan, Felton can handle backup PG duty.

He’s right on the premise of the article. All those passionate rivalries are based on actual passion from players and fans. Guys devoted to their schools, not mercenaries. But its out of anyone’s control. This is what it is now, and the fans will still provide the energy. Someday I do think it’ll get back to more continuity because coaches are going to go insane.

I think he’s wrong about the facilities and it’s a stupid, ignorant thing to say. Great, you’re competitive with an NIL and your facilities look like a 1983 high school. Then it’ll be the facilities issue. You need both, period, or your NIL has to also out-price the facility comps.

I don’t blame Sha for the comment, but hey, now he can start helping out with donations too!! You gotta be good enough to beat Fordham and Monmouth at home, c’mon.

Politi is always going to take the easy cheap shot. Agree with your comment about the facilities and then he piled on the narrative about outer NIL. Right now it’s accurate, but he relishes the thought it’s never going to change.

Posters, incorrectly IMO, criticize Carino as being a homer for SHU. What does that make
Politi for RU?

Politi isn't a homer for either. He's a blusterous fool who thinks that he's a lot smarter than he actually is, and he comes out of the woodwork whenever there's a topic he sees an opportunity to position himself as the great mind we are all yearning to hear from - positive or negative.
