Is the issue how much money we have or how we use what we've got?
By some accounts, it's estimated we're around $2M (correct me if I'm wrong). Do you spread $2M across 10 players or across 2-3?
I coached youth sports, and I can tell you having even one ringer can elevate a team. 2-3 really solid players with a supporting cast is a much better prospect these days IMHO.
I agree with your premise that you need to have 2-3 players to build around. I also believe that for Sha, continuity and player leadership are huge. Even more so than the average coach because of his intensity and personality. They can be a shock to new players and you need a strong-minded experienced leader(s) to help the new players adjust.
For those reasons I felt we should have gone all out to keep one of Dre or KR, knowing we'd never keep both. I felt Dre was more realistic as the combo of Pitino and Repole would keep raising their offer in a Steve Cohen-like way. Kadary is much more valuable as a versatile PG but Dre has great work ethic and leadership qualities.
I don't believe we had close to $2M to spend but no one will discuss actual figures. Let's say we had $1.5m and roughly half of that would have kept Dre, you would likely have had to do without about 6 players from the current roster, at least 4 of which are in the rotation.
By my best guesstimate (just an educated guess) our players fall in 1 of 3 tiers with regard to how much NIL they got. To afford Dre you'd have to lose at least 2 players from each tier to cover Dre and leave a minimal amount for 5 replacements. It may be closer to 3 players from Tier 1
Tier 1
Dylan
Coleman
Dual
Middleton
Chaunce
Tier 2
Toumi
Aligbe
Okorafor
Tier 3
Gus
Harmon
Tubek
Godswill
Felton
Would we be better off with Dre? Yes, no doubt but we'd have a much weaker roster around him than we do now. There's no easy answers when working with a very small bbudget. We just have to be better at everything.
We have to become better recruiters, better at identifying traits that can work in Sha's system. Better at researching injuries or other potential issues with transfers. Find some veteran guys that play tough and have some skills but may lack the size. There are plenty of skilled but undersized guards that could help us. Get a hard-nosed, physical undersized 6'7" big. Get some tough players from Jersey and NYC!! Thats who we are and we have only 1 guy on the roster who is local! Sha took a shot with many guys who have the physical traits but lack the skills or the mindset or the experience.
And Sha needs to look at changing his offense and how he's preparing his teams in the summer. In 3 years he's made a lot of excuses why his teams didn't have good offseasons and it's a direct correlation to poor OOC seasons.
