Attn Pirate Fans!!!!!!!!!!

Clayton and John will have brilliant careers in sports journalism. Wise eager beavers beyond their years. They hustle for a story !
Proud that they are Setonians.

What does a career in sports journalism entail these days? Blogging in your off time on bleacher report? Maybe getting up to the level of zagsblog or carino's blog where you have about a thousand followers and try to sell add space from your blog?

Not knocking the kids. Serious question. Sports journalism is starting to look more and more like a part time hobby than an actual career path. It has always sort of been that way (I remeber one of my high school teachers was the big sports writer in my town growing up, he broke the george oleary notre dame scandal and also voted for the heisman, and it was just a side job), but it seems with the decay of print media it is becoming more and more of a hobby than a career path.

Disappointed in the show right now. Turned it on at about 6:10 and it has been a John Fanta rant about how the fans are wrong about everything. Very disappointed.

More SHU Athletic Dept propaganda from WSOU.

So you're saying that a student on campus, who works for WSOU and who lives and works with the student athletes and is probably in the rec center every day knows far less about what is going on than a bunch of middle-aged fans sitting in their living rooms and who are on campus a handful of times during the year and don't live with the student athletes? Ok, got it! Thanks!

So you're saying those same radio hosts ranting last year about how we were all wrong were correct?

Okay got it! Thanks!

And Jerry Carino talking some sense about fans worrying about this season due to "program history" with "this staff and some of these players".

Let's be honest, in this new media age the relationship between WSOU sports staff and the athletic department is completely different than it was back in my day. (Did I really just say "back in my day?" Damn I'm old.) Back then we were completely independent of the athletic program, we said whatever we wanted and the athletic department hated us for it. Now the same people who are on WSOU are on other outlets where they work directly for the athletic department producing Seton Hall propaganda. Sad to say as an alum but I would never even think to listen to WSOU under those circumstances.

Give Fanta a break. He's not right, of course, but he's a public relations guy just doing his job. I've had to sing a silly tune or two in my life...

Sing that tune somewhere else. WSOU is not the platform for that. At least it's not supposed to be. If you want to be a PR guy, be a PR guy. Don't go on a supposed news outlet and pretend to be a reporter.

He's clearly an employee of the athletic department, a shill. That's OK, just recognize him as what he is. He's not a journalist; why would you expect him to act like one? He may appear on WSOU, but he's only there to shill for the team - the terms of his engagement.

So it's sort of like that South Park episode where jimmy has to distinguish between ads or news?

what exactly were Fanta's "points"? What are we wrong about?

Paraphrasing here, and im sure I'm missing some of his points. But his rant and the rest of the time on the men's team pretty much revolved around these ideas.

1. Callers and posters are wrong
2. We are good
3. We are young, they are only sophomores
4. creightons good
5. What if we beat Prov
6. We are 12-4 and 2-2 in the BE, the season isn't over and we don't get why people are upset
7. KW is a good coach
8. We had no talent when KW came in and he got is to a respectable level of talent.
9. Past seasons don't matter

Just out of curiosity, what about any of these points is so ludicrous? I don't happen to agree with them, but the arguments seem plausible. Nos. 2, 7, 8, and 9 (well, maybe not 7) were pretty much the majority view around here a week or so ago.

Ludicrous? Maybe nothing, and I never used that word... Athletic Dept talking points/propaganda masked as journalism? I believe so.

They then had Jerry Carino on after Fanta's rant and he actually made cogent points (very politely against much of what Fanta said) talking about many of our worries and expressing their validity based on our program's history, KW's history and current players on our team.

John Fanta just spewed what a PR guy would and basically dismissed all worries that the posters/callers have as ridiculous and out of hand.

He's not engaging or even understanding the fans and their worries, he's lambasting them. That's my issue.

Yes, what you said is exactly correct. They all work for SHU so they will not say anything negative. Plus they don't know the game that well either.

Fanta is a PR guy for Seton Hall, but that hat is supposed to come off when he is on WSOU. I did not tune in so I am only going off this thread, but it is sad if the take on last night is accurate. It just speaks to the current state of the overall media that it is okay to be a cheerleader/shill. That is what they are certainly teaching in practice through today's media. I won't paint with a broad stroke saying that it is all on WSOU. However, it is something that should be monitored and coached.
