Trump is delivering on the border so far, but lets keep the discussion honest. This isn't going to save the US money.
The Lankford bill was about $20 billion for border security. Homan is asking for $175 billion.
Will be interesting to see comparisons of the two and breakdowns. Like anything else it all comes down to results. There are significant costs to having an open border. This is really a multi faceted investment in reducing illegal entries (and the long term costs for them being here); drug trafficking, human trafficking and national security.
There are costs and benefits associated with them being here, but at the end of the day I'm not really worried about the ROI. The spending is either worth the cost or it is not.
As long as we are spending to reduce illegal immigration, strengthen our border, limit opportunities for trafficking etc, detaining / deporting dangerous illegal immigrants then it will cost a lot but will have been worth it.
If we are spending to go after illegal immigrants who have been here for years without any legal issues, I would think that part is a waste on several fronts.
Agree. We need to secure the border and dedicate the appropriate resources to apprehend and deport. It’s early, but the results speak for themselves and having strong messaging doesn’t hurt either.
If Homan gets the funding to make it sustainable then we really need to address a pathway for undocumented migrants that are lawful and have been contributing in the workforce. If Trump can get that part done he will have succeeded where both parties have previously failed.
There is a significant Hispanic population in the Lehigh Valley and the majority work in warehouses, hospitality (restaurants/hotels), auto shops. We’d be naive to think all are here legally. The issue initially with a pathway plan will be getting them to self report.
