Strengths: A scoring machine, Cale can fill the point column up in bunches and in a variety of ways. He does a great job of beating his man off the dribble with a quick crossover move, and creates scoring opportunities for himself in the lane. He’s athletic, a slasher, and versatile; gives his team effective minutes at point guard, shooting guard or small forward. When his shot isn’t falling, he adjusts his approach and begins to attack the basket and finish with either hand. If he doesn’t score, there’s a high chance he draws contact and gets the other team in foul trouble. Give him some room and he’ll explode off the ground and try to rise above the rim. A lot of his points come from the free throw line, where he shoots the ball efficiently. When he gets into the lane, he draws so much attention that it’s easy for him to make passes to his open teammates, which is where his court vision comes in. In addition, Cale possesses a high motor and it shows when he’s getting back on defense in transition or pushing the ball on a fast break opportunity. Defensively, he’s a good on-ball defender thanks to his quickness and length, as he’s able to prevent penetration and play the passing lanes well. Cale has a long and athletic body frame at 6-3. He can also take over a game and shoulder his team’s scoring responsibilities.
Weaknesses: Needs to improve his left hand; teams can limit his effectiveness if they force him left and he sometimes drives out of control. His ball-handling overall needs tightening up. He can shoot the ball well from the outside, but he’s a bit streaky. He needs to continue to work on his shooting release and shot off the dribble. Post-up game against smaller defenders needs work. Post defense and shot blocking can show improvement.
Overall: Cale is one of the more impressive players in Delaware in the class of 2017. He can flat-out score the ball and frustrates defenses even further by drawing fouls and living at the free throw line. His defense is continuing to improve, which will only make him a more polished prospect in the near future. The rising junior is on the radar of several high-major Division I schools; expect his list of offers to grow within the next year.
