Clear the paint

With the 1992-1993 team being there today I can’t help but remember how physical those big guys were. When they boxed someone out, they freakin boxed someone out. We really established position and cleared the paint. For as good of a rebounding team we are, big guys like govan can do damage on the boards because we don’t box out. PJ talked to the team about getting better. That has to be a major focal point the rest of the way. Nobody gets second chance points against us.

Great point and so important. Bump it, pin it, scream, it, whatever here. This team reminds me a lot of that one. But we're not playing with the level of focus and grit they PJ had them playing at yet.

The team has been great so far at 15-3, 4-1. We're ranked, have an excellent profile with quality wins, and are on track for everything we want to accomplish.

However, for us diehards, you see some things that need to be fixed that will be issues. The defensive lapses, the slow starts, and, the surprising softness on the boards at times. This team thrives on physicality and we have dropped off significantly on the defensive boards.

We are 220th in the country in opponents' offensive rebounding % at 29.9%. Last season with this same group we were 31st nationally at 25.4%. We haven't dropped off at all on the offensive boards, which is our bread and butter.

So what's up? Have to stay on this group. Have to ride them. We're looking to showcase and run too often.

Even Angel doesn’t clear his man like Jerry or Luther did. Angel goes for the ball and has great instincts. But even with those great instincts Govan had his way with Angel until Ish came in to help out because boxing out is not something we do well.

We'll find out as the season progresses. If so, they will have a day in the future like PJ and the 1992-93 team did yesterday. If not, there will be a lot of disappointment.
