Be on the lookout for an announcement on Friday regarding the use of Convalescent Plasma to treat COVID-19 patients that are in ICU's or on ventilators. FDA, BARDA, Red Cross and Community Blood Centers working together to harvest plasma for patient use. It will probably be on the FDA site tomorrow night.
Essentially, those COVID patients that are 28 day post-symptomatic will be asked to donate plasma that will be transfused into hospitalized patients most in need. This treatment has been utilized in China and on a small scale in California and Washington, but to free up critical care beds, FDA is fast tracking the therapy to scale up quickly given the anticipated increase in hospitalizations. Mayo Clinic will hold the IND/IRB for all plasma collections and use, while the Red Cross will serve as a coordinating body with 50+ community blood banks, to ensure that the plasma is tracked and distributed equitably.
The units will be free (figuring out reimbursement on the back end) and there will be a series of public service announcements released as early as next week imploring those recovered COVID-19 patients to donate plasma.
