Dawes

I don't disagree with Dawes was bad last night and we were better with him on bench. I was responding to we should have played Coleman. We tried to do that.
If they are both going to play bad, still go with Coleman. He’s the future. Better for him to get those games out on the court and learn from them. We’ve invested enough in Dawes…too much. I didn’t like to pickup from the beginning. An undersized 2 guard who is streaky. One dimensional. He can’t drive. If I ever have to watch him either get blocked or throw up a wild shot again it will be too soon.

He doesn’t get more run is because he is too slow, can’t get open because he’s too slow and he can’t play D. It’s like when an NFL team is going bad, the fan’s favorite player is the back up QB.
I have no idea if he’s too slow. You can’t play defense worse than Dawes last night. You can’t expect a kid who takes 1-2 shots a game to be consistent. Give him a 2-3 game run and see what you have in him. If he’s not the answer you gently suggest he transfer at the end of the season and recruit over him.

That is no excuse not to play Coleman over him. Recruits watch. If Coleman doesn’t start getting a larger portion of the minutes, how many more 4* recruits you think we’re going to land? If I were a touted recruit and I saw coach blindly loyal to a senior who is playing god awful and not giving the freshman the opportunity I wouldn’t come to this program.

Did you see Sanders get beat off dribble twice on consecutive plays against Northeastern right in front of Sha? He needs to help himself. What do you think Baylor guards would have done? And I agree he should play more because we need his shooting .
Ok I get it but you couldn’t play worst defense than Dawes last night. He was a ghost on defense and less than a zero on offense. His offense cost us points on the other end.

Sha shouldn't listen to internet coaches but Dawes clearly hasn't played well and the perception that his leash has been longer than others is fair game for discussion. Personally, I would keep starting him but I want to see better and more consistent defense.

Hmm, we just landed two 4 star recruits for next year.

So what's the presumed reason that Sha treats Dawes differently than other players?

Unrelated, it was cool when we got it down to 3 in the second half (despite the game getting away from us rapidly after that).
I believe he is Sha's cousin, I can't confirm, and that might make Sha even tougher on him. Rest assured these coaches have close relationships with many of these kids, parents, handlers, so it means nothing necessarily.

Dawes is an excellent career shooter - shot well in ACC against Duke and others. Our weave and heave offense hurting his O? I'm not the expert, but wishing we would see a much larger menu of the O Sha ran at St. Peter's.

Unfortunately, our lineup is what it is. If Sha could recreate the offense/defense he had at St. Peter's for his magical run, I'm sure he would.

You can’t run that offense effectively without shooters. They pack the paint. You saw a couple nice cuts early but once a team realizes you can’t threaten them from distance they play off and sag. Also makes the pick and roll less effective since defender isn’t force to fight over the screen. They simply go under and no need for the pick defender to show. A lot of our offensive woes will disappear when we find someone who can consistently knock Down shots. That should be a top recruiting priority. No point getting slashers when there are no slashing lanes when defense doesn’t have to respect the kick.

Um just checked the stats and our other 2 guards are a combined 10 for 40 with 3 pointers. By comparison Al is shooting much better at mid 30 %. Sure he has been awful against the better teams but Kooks and Dylan have been bad too.

Al is not a very good defensive player and playing against bigger and stronger guards he gets burned. That is more of an issue that the guy he is assigned out scores him and he can't hold his own.

That being said our 3 point shooting is atrocious and Al is not the only problem. I think there is a big enough sample to see that Al has zero help in the back court when it comes to 3 point shooters.

The issue with Dawes goes beyond his three point shooting.
* Decision making with the ball....his three point shooting would improve if he stopped the step back or shooting off the dribble. He's a catch and shoot 3 point shooter and should limit the number he takes because of that.
* Constantly overdribbles and the offense stalls because of it...no movement because everyone knows what is coming.
* Turnovers.
* Victim of playing up-tempo more mistakes when he gets sped up.
* Selfish with the ball.

Points well made but all 3 guards over dribble because of this system of the WEAVE offense! Also Kadary has more turnovers and so does Dylan on a per minute played! So Blame Al but he is in the same boat with Kadary and Dylan!

He drives to the basket too often into bigger players and instead of kicking it out he tried to force it up but so do Dylan and Kadary!

Richmond dribbles with his head up and is the PG. He also has 2X assists as Dawes. I don’t see any over dribbling from Wusu.

But they are bigger and can get their shots off.

It's a shame that supporters are bashing Dawes for a game that clearly wasn't his best. The kid has averaged greater than 39% from three the past two seasons, and was around 39% prior to Baylor. Fortunately, we don't get judged like this when we experience a bad day.

This board is free, I hope Dawes isn't reading this stuff.

He's getting paid by the fans. He's a professional athlete. He can deal with it.

I think the step back is something of a rhythm device he uses. Certainly he uses it to free himself up.

Of all the issues here, that's the least of his problems. He makes a solid percentage of those looks.

I normally agree with you but not here. The percentage is not the issue. It’s the 1 dimensional play. He can’t finish a layup. He drives out of control and flips up wild shots. The problem with his 3 point shooting is he’s all or nothing a the all is usually against bad teams. And it’s note than 1 bad game. He was a no show against USC and 4-14 against Iowa. He’s shooting 37% overall and odds a liability on defense. He is just not very good.

Reading this board back in October it was clear that Dawes would be everyone’s whipping boy this season. If he makes 3s we have a chance to win. It’s that simple. I don’t think he’s selfish. Trying to do too much, yes. Hope he comes out blazing tomorrow night.

I’m pretty confident Dawes couldn’t give 2 shits what 10-15 people say on this message board about him.

I don’t see that view at all. It’s the eye test and sharing where the gaps are in his game respectfully is fair game. If he’s hot from 3, it covers the other blemishes in his game. The last minute of the Baylor game was an example of the selfishness.

And I’m not going to pick on Dan because he corrected his view, but his original glance of the performance Dawes showed in that practice set an expectation that he could run an offense proficiently.

It’s almost like he forgets who he’s playing against. This isn’t high school where I’m sure he made a living off of those acrobatic prayers some would call layups. He drives into the trees and literally throws it into waiting defensive hands. Why?????
Because he has ZERO basketball instincts. Simple as that.
