Fight at the end?

He appears to say something during the handshake to get the St. John player going. No clue if it was deserved. If he was standing up for Gordon then it could be understandable.

Guys I was at the game up close and saw it breakout. Lots of jawing from each team throughout. Who knows who said what first and how it started. Chalk it up to emotions in what was a hotly contested game that I for one didn't see coming. We have a bunch of NY kids who didn't play well (Desi aside) and I'm sure desperately wanted to at MSG in front of their friends and family (and blew a huge lead). St. John's has a bunch of 4th/5th year guys who are mediocre/bad players, either left behind after Lavin left or who came in this past spring as a result of the expansion draft the SJU staff was forced to cobble together at the last minute, and who have been either getting their a** kicked in BE play or losing close ones to better teams, like ours. Throw in the controversial call at the end - while I'm happy we got the call (we are long overdue for one like that), it was a bad job by the ref -- and you had an emotionally charged environment that resulted in some smack talking. I'm sure this is going to be over-analyzed to death, given the social media world we live in, but at the end of the day I don't think it is a big deal based on postgame comments and what I saw.

Credit to both coaching staffs for getting their guys off the floor before something happened that neither team wants.

Is it that wild? Hmmm heated 18-22 year old guys aren't likely to mouth off to an openly gay opponent? I don't have evidence, maybe others do, but it's not a wild conclusion based on the circumstances.

Incident like this to bring the team together! Don't you call our teammate homophobic slurs!!

I'm telling you, this was a great result for the hal. Ugly game, didn't play up to their potential, but I think a lot came from it.

Agree on this. Any team we can get a W with Delgado being essentially a non-factor, and IW playing his worse game of the year, you take that and RUN. This would have been a terrible loss for purposes of our NCAA hopes.

This game will ultimately help us when we play at the Garden in the BET. Hopefully the guys got the MSG jitters out of the way.

We had a better presence than I thought we would (I came with 3 other diehards). Also, as I said in another thread, I was surprised that the crowd overall was so good given the year SJU is having.

If we keep trending upwards (or at least maintain the success we are having this year), the SJU/Hall games are going to be really fun for us the next few years, and serve as a nice diversion from the Knicks/Nets disasters, because based on the SJU kids and current recruiting I expect SJU to be a very good team in no time.

shu cheers sounded loud on tv

The big group of SHU fans behind the SJU "student section" got very loud toward the end. Could have used some of that noise sooner but better late than never.

I think our fans had some juice taken out of them by the early lead, only to see it wither away. It got loud for both sides at the end.

Not to mention that I'm sure Gordon is used to hearing nonsense spewed at him regarding his sexuality. Kids (and adults) use the F word when not even meaning to make a slight at someone's preference. That doesn't make it right, but it is reality. I have no doubt our kids might make a similar comment if the shoe were on the other foot. That isn't taking a shot at anyone in particular, I just think it is reality when considering the age of these kids and the heightened emotions associated with a close game filled with lots of jawing that was decided by a controversial call.

I'm pretty sure BOTH teams were jawing.

while i am sure trash talk was exchanged during the game, i can only infer that something of a personal nature was stated verbally towards gordon because there is no way he would have reacted like he did for just more escalated trash talk in handshake line

Carino was tweeting that the SHU crowd was thin. But watching the replay of the final FT's by IW and hearing the crowd cheering, I take back what I said. Good job by the fans, now let's pack the rock fir the next two.

I thought the foul on Whitehead was similar to the one Carrington committed a few a possesion or two earlier. When you reach in and make contact, that's a foul. Refs have to call that one. No controversy at all. Refs should call call a game the same way for 40 minutes.

Regarding Gordon. As I have often said in my post game interviews on the Trove he's incredibly intense. He takes losses harder than anyone in the locker room. Even those on the staff.

If you're in a fox hole he's the person you want next to you.

Thought it was a foul too from where I was. Overall though the refs lost control of the game.

Maybe it was because I hadn't been to MSG in a while, or that I was watching without the benefit of some adult beverages (also the first time in a while), but that was the most surreal game I can remember

There was also no reason to be in position to foul Whitehead given the score, the time and the fact SHU had no time outs left. But I guess when you have a kid NBA video coordinator doing the coaching....

In a few days this will be a win like any other win, just as the Nova loss is now like all the other losses. That said it is a gift but they all count the same.

We committed stupid fouls too. A one win team almost beat the team third in the conference. I say they overachieved by a long shot and kudos to their staff for keeping them in the game after getting blown out early

Didnt hank Leonard do al mcguire's coaching?

That's totally true, but on that one particular play, the Johnnie's was the side that handled the strategy poorly.

Hank Raymond may have done coaching for McGuire, but he won a lot more than Mullin has to this point.

Mullin may indeed turn out to the greatest coach in history, but for a guy who hasn't accomplished a single thing yet, the benefit of the doubt he's received has been incredible.

What was the controversial call at the end that you say decided the game? I thought that our players decided the game.

QUESTION: In the last sequence Desi knocked the ball away from a St Johns player. St Johns picked up the loose ball & got a shot off. Would it have been good or had time run out ???

TK
Appeared clock on ack board was on before shot went up. Unfortunately, I deleted tape as soon as game ended since I didn't want to ever see it again.

The last foul was obvious and should have been called. Sju was playing isaiah rough all game. That is what I would gave done too. And isaiah handled it poorly all game. Till he won the game.

My biggest concern was the homecoming of the City kids. After riding high so long and some outstanding ball, I was concerned that Whitehead would feel the pressure and deliver a clunker. Hey, it happens. I only saw the last six minutes, but I was not surprised he went 1-12. It is gpod to get it out of your system. Great win, even of it was ugly. I've seen more pushing and shoving at the end of a game at Mohawk Pond in Red Bank. Total non event. Just like the players said.
