FINAL: USA 1, Iran 0

Christian Pulisic fires USMNT into World Cup last 16 with win over Iran

The United States men's national team advanced to the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup, beating Iran 1-0 at Al Thumama Stadium on Tuesday to finish second in Group B and book a last-16 matchup against the Netherlands.

Christian Pulisic turned in Sergino Dest's headed cross in the 38th minute to get the crucial breakthrough, putting his body on the line and suffering an abdominal injury after subsequently clashing with Iran's goalkeeper.

The injury led Pulisic to be replaced at half-time by Brenden Aaronson, but for the US it was surely a price worth paying as Gregg Berhalter's side hung on to its lead in the second half to advance at the expense of Iran.

England, which beat Wales 3-0 in the other final-round group game, top the group on seven points, ahead of the US on five. Iran, which would have advanced with a tie, finish third ahead of bottom-placed Wales.

The US will now take on Group A winners Netherlands on Saturday as it looks to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

While a place in the knockout rounds was at stake, the buildup to the game had been dominated by off-the-field news, including US Soccer's decision to scrub the Islamic Republic symbol from Iran's flag in a prematch tweet on Sunday. US Soccer later restored the image of Iran's flag in its entirety on social media, but not before drawing the ire of the country's government and its federation.

Iran's government reacted by accusing US Soccer of removing the name of God from their national flag, and the Iranian football federation said their country will lodge a complaint with FIFA over the scrubbing of the Islamic Republic emblem.

Great job! 👏 Tough fought win! 💪👊⚽️🇺🇸

Fitting it was Pulisic scoring. Let’s just 🙏 he’s healthy. They get a very winnable match up as well.

Wow, that was a tough last many minutes. Still don’t know what happen on the very last play. I did not think the play before warranted a foul. It was close though. Geez.

Unless they blow a significant lead in the next match we would have to call this World Cup a success.. long way to go.

in review it seems like a favorable group draw for the US. Advancing on 2 goals. got really dicey when pulisic went out.

Am I the only one who thought that extra time would never end . Good job by the US team in a very tense and physical game. Glad to see that Pulisic said he will be ready to play against the Netherlands .

World Cup draw has suddenly gotten interesting for US

By Jonathan Lehman

They’re going Dutch.

After the agita of two tournament-opening draws and the thrill of a tense 1-0 victory over Iran om Tuesday, the United States has landed where so many pre-World Cup predictions had them — in the Round of 16 and facing the Netherlands.

Yes, the showdown Saturday between the Red, White and Blue and the Oranje is basically the chalk outcome. After that, it could get interesting.

“I always say it’s us against the world,” Tim Weah said. “Because no one believed that U.S. could play good football, and we’re just here trying to show the world. … I’m just really happy that we’re through to the next round, and it’s a beautiful day.”

This isn’t your uncle’s Netherlands team, which popularized total football, or even the edition that finished third at the 2014 World Cup under current manager Louis van Gaal — like the U.S., it did not even qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and was left reeling by a Round of 16 elimination last summer at the Euros. It’s perhaps more reminiscent of the in-transition Belgium team to which the U.S. lost 2-1 in extra time in the final 16 in 2014.

The Dutch won Group A with two wins and a draw and a goal differential of 5-1, but the underlying stats do not flatter them. They were outshot 35-25 over the three games, including 11-8 in shots on target, and were credited with just 2.3 expected goals, while their opponents had a combined 2.7.

Dutch forward Cody Gakpo has been perhaps the breakout star of the tournament, scoring three highlight-reel goals accompanied by imagined cash-register sound effects — the 23-year-old will be transferred from PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands to one of Europe’s super clubs before long. The imposing Virgil van Dijk anchors the defense, and Frenkie de Jong is instrumental in the midfield.

To look ahead even further, if the Americans get past the Netherlands, they will meet either the Group C winner or the Group D runner-up in the quarterfinals on Dec. 9.

That line in the bracket was penciled in for Argentina, as a heavy favorite in Group C — but the Argentines have faltered to such an extent that they’re in danger of elimination on Wednesday and certainly may finish second in their group.

If Argentina indeed goes home unhappy or moves to the other side of the bracket as the “2C” team, the U.S. would be playing for a spot in the quarters against the likes of Poland, Denmark, Australia or even Saudi Arabia. The Americans would even be favorites in a few of those matchups.

The Group the US found itself in was made for the US to advance. However, allowing a late goal by Wales made the Iran game a must win. I thought the US played ok especially the first half. But, there is no way this game should have been competitive and yet the US was hanging on to dear life the final 20 minutes of the game.

I am very happy the US advanced but this was supposed to be a given this year. There are some nice pieces in Adams and Mckennie and Pulisec. I wanted to see Reyna play but I guess not. The end of the road happens against the Dutch.

I wrote an article with my recap of the game. Stressful to watch especially in stoppage time but a win is a win. The offensive firepower is just not there with this team but 1 was enough. The US did what they had to do (get out of group) and everything from here is house money. The Dutch game will be tough especially if Pulisic and Sargent can’t play, but it’s winnable. I’m not looking ahead to potential QF matchups. This is the second youngest team in the tournament. With 4 more years of seasoning, 2026 could be shaping up to be very special. I’m not expecting much Saturday but anything is possible.

US is good enough to hang with almost anyone. Most of our guys play for (or at least played for) real clubs in big leagues.

Netherlands is tough, though. Winnable? Yes. Likely to win? Implied odds say we have around a 25% chance. Similar to a 4 seed vs. a 13 seed in the NCAAs.

Iran stinks, USA should have won 5-0
Not even remotely true. Iran is a pretty good team that played hard. Actually really felt bad for their guys who have been between a rock and a hard place with a violent extremist regime back home but still wanting to support their country and play the game they love on the world’s greatest stage. All things considered it was a brave effort by the Iranians and a terrific win for the US.

I think it’s closer than that. And don’t forget that from now on, you can advance on PKs, so you can “win” with a tie.
