David Dinkins was a big tennis fan, I once had the pleasure of running into him at the USTA National Tennis Center during Arthur Ashe Kids Day, he was gracious and kind, this had to be 20 or 22 years back.

As Manhattan Borough President he provided funding to AIDS education when it wasn't popular. He marched in Gay Pride Parade in 1990 when politicans of that era stayed away. He did more for housing redevelopement in his lone term of Mayor than Giuliani did for 2 terms.
He got the Walt Disney company to come to Times Square and struck the very best deal ever for a city and sports venue/organization with the USTA and US Open. He inherited a political corruption scandal by the Koch admin and crime and homicides was all time high in 1990. But he petitioned to get funding to increase NYPD force by 25% in his time as Mayor.

Why is that the first thing you point out is that he is Black?

Isn't that racist? Why is color the first thing you see?

I could not care less if he black, green, or yellow.

If you look at the Wikipedia for Fiorello La Guardia, it does not mention that he is Italian until well into the article.

For Dinkins, it is in the first sentence.

What is it with liberals that you must always identify everyone by race and then through in anything you can about LBGQTIA.

Your swipe at Giuliani is laughable but now unexpected.

He was a pioneer for NYC...by the 80s many larger cities around the country already had african american mayors and the largest city did not...if i chose to give more of a swipe towards Rudy I would have cited the classless act he took part in in 1992.

To be fair, you don't hear latinos and latinas being called brown very often. You almost never hear Asians being called yellow. In fact both of those might be considered slurs by those groups of people. They only focus on one race and one color. Just my opinion.

i think his race is defining for him as a barrier breaker. its an important part of his history and nycs history. big ol swing and a miss.

I thought it was interesting last night on MNF at the NFL made a point of putting an all black referee crew out there. The chief of the crew commented that he was looking forward mostly to putting the night behind them as he didn’t think the color of your skin had anything to do with how good a referee you are.

I think he did a lot more important and better things than just be the first black mayor of NYC. He'll always be the first black mayor of NYC, but I think you missed out a pretty good leader if you think that's his defining moment.

In 2020, nothing about race should be defining any more. Whether it's positive or negative news.

leftists see everything through an identity politics lens. Just look at the coverage of Biden's cabinet picks. First latino this, first woman that. Who cares. The only thing that matters is if they are qualified for the job.

Yet we live in society where female opportunity still supressed, minority opportunity still supressed...i forgot through your utopian lens unfairness doesnt exist and everyone is equal

They are not suppressed, they have every opportunity to succeed as anyone else.

Dinkins was a bad mayor. His crummy administration greased the skids for Giuliani time.

Dinkins being the first black mayor of nyc was a huge thing. But his work was ng

Dinkins was average at best. Considering he was just a one term mayor says a lot in itself. Probably his most significant claim to fame was that he was the first black. NYC mayor.

True, La Guardia was a barrier breaker and did great things for the city.

I never said nor do I believe life is fair.

I do believe anybody in the USA that desires to better their lot can do so.
Life is not fair. The closest way we could get it to be fair is eliminate inheritences....Let's see how many for equality go for that idea.

One of the problems is people believe equality means equal results. It's about equal opportunity. Where I have a problem with equality is that there not all kids receive the same quality education. We need to figure out a way to be better in that area.

Considering after hundreds of years we are still having firsts, I wouldn't say they are insignificant. I agree it’s not relevant to their qualifications or job performance, but we always celebrate firsts and they are a part of the story of American history. I'm on board with not overstating the significance as they will still have the same opportunity to succeed or fail as anyone else. From my view it is just more of a tip of the hat type of acknowledgement and then we move on.

You can make a first out of anything you want. Will we acknowledge the first white guy to record 500 assists in SHU history? I sure hope not.

There were 105 mayors before Dinkins in NYC. Every one of them a white man.

While his race has nothing to do with his job performance, there is nothing wrong with recognizing he was the first black man to hold the job.

Dinkins didnt get a 2nd term because of two race/ethnic related conflicts that took place in the middle of his term and the fact that Staten Island succession was a real thing then.

Dinkins didn't get a second term because he was a terrible mayor. He was by all accounts a very nice, kind gentleman and that is his legacy. But as far Mayors go, he was not successful and that is why he did not get reelected.

A clown like diblasio rolls to a 2nd term...tells you something about a dem mayor losing reelection.

Seton75 i am shocked at your intensity on this thread...

Crown Heights was a huge issue early 90s middle of his term, it was a no win scenario and a lose lose scenario for him.

I think there was a time people voted for candidates. Today I think people vote for party. Despite business being destroyed by looters and people being pushed off subway platforms, I think DiBlasio would win a 3rd. Sad.

Why? Because he doesn't suck up to the party line? And that bothers you?

you could let research be open source. for some reason knowledge is under lock and key with access for those who can afford it.

I hope you werent at the Rock at the end of last season to celebrate Bob Hurts. pretty big deal considering african americans were not given equal opportunity in the sport of basketball.

It’s called IP for a reason
its the downfall of academics. the world stands still because nobody wants to collaborate. our ancestors knew better, share knowledge. in any case its the exact problem shuhoopsfan is talking about. there is not an equal right to knowledge.

There is collaboration all over with incentives and guardrails to stimulate innovation but also protect the IP. Why would someone spend years of time to develop something only to have it used by others and get no benefit?

Also tells you something about polarization these days. If it says "D" next to the person's name, they have a great chance to win no matter what they stand for. What's scary is some NYC residents actually support what DeBlasio is doing.

He,was ineffectual. If you lived or worked in nyc then, you saw it clearly.

Republicans voted for the BIGGEST ASSHOLE who ever ran for pres, saw his 4 yrs of works and voted for him again, so accusing dems of voting party line is really humorous.

This is the world put in motion by repubs starting propaganda tv station. Beginning with fox. And now, if trump said the world was shaped like a triangle, they'd be making fun of round gloves.

The age of truth being irrelevant.

Depends on your definition of asshole. Who’s the bigger asshole the nice guy who gives $1.8 billion to Iran to fund people who want to destroy our country like JV team Isis or the guy who is an asshole to the media but takes out Isis? All depends on your point of view.
