Southeastern Conference wants Mississippi to change flag

JACKSON, Miss. — The Southeastern Conference is considering barring league championship events in Mississippi unless the state changes its Confederate-based flag.

“It is past time for change to be made to the flag of the State of Mississippi,” Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement Thursday. “Our students deserve an opportunity to learn and compete in environments that are inclusive and welcoming to all. In the event there is no change, there will be consideration of precluding Southeastern Conference championship events from being conducted in the State of Mississippi until the flag is changed.”

The NCAA has already said it would not schedule postseason events in Mississippi because of the state flag.

National protests about racial injustice have renewed debate about Confederate symbols. Mississippi has the last state flag that includes the battle emblem: a red field topped by a blue X with 13 white stars. White supremacists put the symbol on the flag in 1894 during the backlash to black political power that developed during Reconstruction.

During a Black Lives Matter protest June 5 outside the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion in downtown Jackson, thousands of people cheered as an 18-year-old organizer, Maisie Brown, called for the removal of all Confederate symbols in the state, including from the flag.

Bipartisan coalitions of state lawmakers have been trying to build momentum to change the flag, but Republican Gov. Tate Reeves has said repeatedly that if the banner is to be redesigned, it should be done by the state’s voters.

People who voted in a 2001 election chose to keep the flag rather that replace it with a design that did not include the Confederate emblem.

All of Mississippi’s public universities and several cities and counties have stopped flying the state flag in recent years because of the emblem. The state has two SEC schools — the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University.

Leaders at both universities said Thursday that the state should change the flag.

“Mississippi needs a flag that represents the qualities about our state that unite us, not those that still divide us,” Ole Miss Chancellor Glenn Boyce and athletic director Keith Carter said in a joint statement. “We support the SEC’s position for changing the Mississippi state flag to an image that is more welcoming and inclusive for all people.”

Mississippi State President Mark E. Keenum said in a statement that he respects Sankey’s position. Keenum said he wrote to state elected officials June 12 telling them that the university’s students, faculty and administrators have been on record in favor of changing the flag since 2015.

“The letter said, in part, that our flag should be unifying, not a symbol that divides us,” Keenum said. “I emphasized that it is time for a renewed, respectful debate on this issue.”

Commissioner threatens no SEC championships in Mississippi until state flag changes

  • Alex ScarboroughESPN Staff Writer
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey threatened to not host any future conference championship events in Mississippi until the state changes its flag.

Mississippi is the only state that still has the Confederate symbol -- a blue cross with the 13 stars -- on its flag.

"It is past time for change to be made to the flag of the State of Mississippi," Sankey said in a statement. "Our students deserve an opportunity to learn and compete in environments that are inclusive and welcoming to all.

"In the event there is no change, there will be consideration of precluding Southeastern Conference championship events from being conducted in the State of Mississippi until the flag is changed."

The SEC last ran a championship event in Mississippi in May 2016, when Mississippi State hosted the softball tournament in Starkville. The NCAA already banned any of its predetermined postseason events from being held in Mississippi because of the flag.

In 2001, Mississippians voted in a referendum to keep the current flag. But this week, in the wake of nationwide protests against racism, Mississippi legislators again proposed a bill that would remove the Confederate symbol from the flag.

Several state universities, including Mississippi State and Ole Miss, stopped flying the flag in 2016.

Mississippi State University president Mark Keenum issued a statement shortly after Sankey's comments on Thursday, saying he understood the commissioner's position.

"Clearly, the current national climate is such that this debate may produce unintended consequences for our student athletes here at Mississippi State University and those at the University of Mississippi," Keenum said in the statement. "In addition, there may be similar unintended consequences for academic pursuits at our all our state's public universities and negative economic impacts on the state's communities as well.

"Since 2015, our Student Association, Robert Holland Faculty Senate and university administration have been firmly on record in support of changing the state flag. I have reiterated that view to our state's leaders on multiple occasions, including during face-to-face discussions in recent days and hours. On June 12, I wrote to the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the Mississippi House reaffirming that support. The letter said, in part, that our flag should be unifying, not a symbol that divides us. I emphasized that it is time for a renewed, respectful debate on this issue."

New Bulldogs coach Mike Leach agreed, tweeting: "I support President Keenum. At Mississippi State University I embrace the inclusion of all People and open dialogue on all issues. Hail State!"

Ole Miss chancellor Glenn Boyce and vice chancellor for intercollegiate athletics Keith Carter issued a joint statement as well.

"The University of Mississippi community concluded years ago that the Confederate battle flag did not represent many of our core values, such as civility and respect for others," the statement said. "In 2016, the university stopped flying the state flag over our campus. Mississippi needs a flag that represents the qualities of our state that unite us, not those that still divide us. We support the SEC's position for changing the Mississippi State flag to an image that is more welcoming and inclusive for all people."

Conference USA, home to Southern Miss, also said Thursday night that it will review its championship hosting policies "in order to ensure we provide environments that align with our continued mission to support and protect our student-athletes."

Commissioner Judy MacLeod's statement didn't specify Mississippi or the flag but did note "symbols and individuals that represent horrific injustices of the past."

The Golden Eagles are slated to host the 2022 conference baseball tournament.

I don't think it's the place of a sports league to be demanding things like this of state government, but yeah it should probably change.
Mississippi had this on the ballot going back nearly 2 decades....didnt win then

Look perhaps ole miss needs to change their nickname as well

Well the people of the state have spoken. They should put it up for vote again and whatever the result, abide by it.
Yes they spoke at that time, since then i presume the electorate has changed, disciples of the klan have died off, perhaps a tad more diverse population

It is time to change it. But, not the job of a conference but the legislature. This is a good kick in the pants

I believe there is a fine line from an historical pov for any entity being inclusive and not offending to any race, creed, culture while still embracing the significance of what history is. I feel in a certain way the acute decisions of the last few weeks is somewhat of a backhanded insult to our african american people and citizens...why has it taken outcry of some tragic deaths for these changes to happen at this time and not in the past...
Jefferson Davis was the confederacy president and a senator from Mississippi, our American political party system was different through the mid 1800s than what it is now.
There were also Confederate soldiers that fought on the same side as union soldiers in the mexican american war...

With that side also not sure that Fighting Irish and Pirates are the best representation for team nicknames for two catholic schools

NCAA extends policy banning championship events where Confederate flag flown

  • i

    Alex ScarboroughESPN Staff Writer
The NCAA expanded its Confederate flag policy on Friday to prohibit all its championship events from being held in the states where the flag is flown.

Mississippi is the only state affected by the policy change. It is the only state flag that continues to feature the banner of the Confederacy -- a blue cross with 13 white stars.

"There is no place in college athletics or the world for symbols or acts of discrimination and oppression," Michael V. Drake, chair of the NCAA board of governors and Ohio State president, said in a statement. "We must continually evaluate ways to protect and enhance the championship experience for college athletes. Expanding the Confederate flag policy to all championships is an important step by the NCAA to further provide a quality experience for all participants and fans."

The NCAA's previous policy, which was enacted in 2001, applied only to predetermined championship sites. At the time, it affected both Mississippi and South Carolina. But in 2015, following the murder of nine members of the historically black Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston, South Carolina stopped flying the Confederate flag at its state Capitol and was therefore allowed to host NCAA championship events again.

The NCAA policy now includes all championship sites, including those awarded based on competition like baseball, softball, lacrosse and women's basketball.

"Competing in an NCAA championship is a special experience for college athletes who compete at the highest level and we are grateful for the college athlete voice leading to this decision," NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement. "We must do all we can to ensure that NCAA actions reflect our commitment to inclusion and support all our student-athletes. There can be no place within college sports where any student-athlete is demeaned or unwelcome."

The NCAA's statement comes on the heels of SEC commissioner Greg Sankey coming out against the Mississippi state flag Thursday night, threatening to not hold the conference's championship events in the state so long as the flag remains unchanged.

Both SEC institutions issued statements in support of Sankey following his announcement. Twins remove statue of ex-owner Calvin Griffith over comments

10:42 AM ET
  • ESPN
The Minnesota Twins announced Friday the removal of a statue in front of Target Field of former owner Calvin Griffith.

Griffith relocated the Washington Senators to Minnesota ahead of the 1961 season and remained owner until 1984. He died in 1999 at the age of 87.

Griffith was a major figure in the franchise's history, but racist remarks he made at a 1978 speaking engagement marred his legacy.

"I'll tell you why we came to Minnesota. It was when we found out you only had 15,000 blacks here," Griffith said then. "Black people don't go to ballgames, but they'll fill up a rassling ring and put up such a chant it'll scare you to death. We came here because you've got good, hardworking white people here."

He was unaware a newspaper reporter was present at the dinner.

"While we acknowledge the prominent role Calvin Griffith played in our history, we cannot remain silent and continue ignoring the racist comments he made in Waseca in 1978," the Twins said in a statement Friday. "His disparaging words displayed a blatant intolerance and disregard for the Black community that are the antithesis of what the Minnesota Twins stand for and value.

"Our decision to memorialize Calvin Griffith with a statue reflects an ignorance on our part of systemic racism present in 1978, 2010 and today. We apologize for our failure to adequately recognize how the statue was viewed and the pain it caused for many people -- both inside the Twins organization and across Twins Territory. We cannot remove Calvin Griffith from the history of the Minnesota Twins, but we believe removal of this statue is an important and necessary step in our ongoing commitment to provide a Target Field experience where every fan and employee feels safe and welcome."

Griffith's statue is one of several that sits in Target Plaza outside of the Twins' stadium. The statues include those of former players Rod Carew, Kent Hrbek, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva and Kirby Puckett, former manager Tom Kelly, former owners Griffith, Carl Pohlad and Eloise Pohlad, and Twins mascot T.C. Bear.

Target Field, which opened in 2010, is in Minneapolis, the same city in which George Floyd, a black man, died after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly eight minutes.

Carew, whom Griffith called a "damn fool" for playing for only $170,000 during that same 1978 appearance, said he long ago forgave Griffith but understands the Twins' decision on the statue.

"I understand and respect the Minnesota Twins decision to remove the Calvin Griffith statue outside Target Field," Carew, who is black, said in a statement released by the team. "While I've always supported the Twins decision to honor Calvin with a statue, I also remember how inappropriate and hurtful his comments were on that fateful day in Waseca. The Twins did what they felt they needed to do for the organization and for our community. While we cannot change history, perhaps we can learn from it."

If you asked me 2 months ago, I'd say yeah it probably should be gone. But today, screw it. We're getting rid of everything people don't like and at some point enough's enough. We're getting to the point people are going to suggest taking US history out of the classrooms because while this nation is filled with greatness it's also filled with flaws. Because it's flawed we must destroy it.

Since we're getting rid of statues immediately maybe some out there hates our historical figures so much, I will take all of their Washingtons, Hamiltons, Lincolns, Jacksons, and Franklins if they are looking to get rid of them..

If the SEC and NCAA want to play this game, I suggest the Senate starts an in depth investigation into corruption in college sports. Erasing history is a dangerous precedent. If you erase history, good or bad you lose the ability to learn from it. I understand the Democrat party's desire to wash away their history of being the party of slavery but it happen and should never be repeated. The virtue signaling over everything is getting ridiculous.

Maybe you missed it but it's already started. They recently pulled down a George Washington statue...yes ther founder of our country. By today's standard slavery is horrible. At the time, however, it was accepted and common. You can't judge people by a standard established 200+ years in the future. I'm sure there are things we're doing today that our future generations will consider barbaric.

A just oh so lovely group of right wingers have been allowed to run rampant on every thread on here re: the civil unrest, Covid, police reform, etc over the past few weeks. As such, I don’t know exactly who needs to/will see this bc I imagine a lot of rational posters here are turned off by the Fox News-ification of Pirate Crew. Before this gets jettisoned off the main page bc of the Northeast Catholics Who Oddly Choose the Confederacy As Their Hill To Die On, all I have to say is this:

To those who have been in the fight in any way over the last few weeks, keep it up. It’s working. Keep protesting. Keep donating to the right groups, causes & candidates. Keep pressuring your representatives & institutions that are holding onto relics of white privilege like the confederate flag or statues of US traitors. Keep amplifying black voices where possible. Keep having those uncomfortable convos w/people in your orbit that need to learn & change. Whatever you’re doing, no matter how small, keep it all up bc there’s so much change happening around all these issues right now all over the country. Dozens & dozens of separate things every day since Floyd was murdered. It’s beautiful to see.

I know this will fall on deaf ears for sadly so much of the contingent that visits here. But I felt compelled to write it anyway bc as you can see above, the troglodytes can sense times about to be up & that they’re losing.

They’re scared. So keep it up. It’s working

We are now living this nightmare. It started with COVID-1984 and now it is progressing through our culture/society.

Lol. The fact there is concern about a couple people on every thread but no concern about people taking over a part of a city, no concern about a potential blue flu in NYC that could put millions in danger, no concerns about lives that were lost at the hands of ordinary civilians, etc says it all.

Let's get this straight. This is first and foremost a sports board. Because it's off season, because of the pandemic, because of the civil unrest, I have loosened the reigns here and allowed a lot of leeway regarding the discussions of the above. But when that discussion turns too political, too contentious, when few, including you ignore my warnings, the thread is transferred to the more apropos Life off the Ship board.

You are not the moderator here. You don't tell me how to run this site. In fact you should be thankful that I let you rant here as often as I do before being forced to comment. I doubt you would get that courtesy on many other Rivals boards.

I suggest you be very careful in your response. You have already been suspended here once. You won't get a second chance!

Flag, Who kneels who doesn't, disrespect for this/that....this board has turned into a cesspool of unrelated basketball commentary. It is disturbing considering the real goal of this Site and the kids we all cheer for.....I am not just referring to this chain but multiple chains on the Trove. I have been actively on this Site for close to 15 years and I have been wanting to write this post for the past 4 weeks. Please keep your posts and comments outside of basketball to your daily Reddit rant. Does anyone else feel the same way? If its just me I will continue to read, cringe and watch everyone show their true colors.

Halldan, yes you are the moderator. Lately many threads from here and trove that you may have had the iniitial posting on you moved to LOTS after it gets messy. I posed this in other posts, why is it that LOTS has free reign? There are some that come across as bigoted people and think they are hip and relevant with use of terms towards others.. If Seton Hall is so mindful of certain things that have represented them on this site in the past, ie the cheer flagman situation, I can't see how those that have narrow minded thinking who lack empathy, diversity and inclusiveness to others based on the content of their posts are expressing seton hall's misson. I dont give a damn who is a money donation person or what their rate is. This is not a left, right, blue or red issue. I realize you have a lot of friends and colleagues in real life on this board through your time associated with school and fan of the sports team at the university.
A specific sect of posters have dismissed the entire Covid pandemic, they have dismissed the civil and social unrest that is unfortunately taking place because a certain race in our country still isnt view as equal 155 years after a war. They feel someone's personal opinions of others creeds, sex orientation, reliigous beliefs is fine to be vile across social media and it should have no reprecussion to whether they should remain employed or not.
This isnt about Mamu needs to rebound better or Cale has to be more assertive at the rim. This is America and the representation of the message board and SHU.

Seems like the flag should be changed even if it is just a piece of cloth.

How is a Pirate an appropriate nickname, talk about offensive and inappropriate, especially at a so-called catholic university, let’s go rob, rape, loot, and pillage??

How does one be so offended by a flag like that but be OK with a Pirate?

I was actually going to post on this exact message yesterday, but didn't want to actually put the idea in peoples' head to change it.

I'm thinking Seton Hall hugs? Because of Covid that's probably not a good idea. Seton Hall puppies? Seton Hall suns? Seton Hall red solo cups? Who doesn't love a red solo cup?
