Francesa on Seton Hall and NIL

Thank you for posting, Mike’s response was spot on. Each are entitled to their own opinion on NIL. Mine is that I prefer my beloved University to step out of this madness, maybe to D3, rather than continue this charade. Looks like the Ivy League is thus far enforcing amateurism, but they have like-minded schools and are willing to accept the competitive imbalance. It would be great if the Big East did something similar, but I doubt it.

Thanks for sharing. Very good listen. And one point he touched upon that i did not even think of is from academic perspective....why would coaches even care if you go to class considering you will be gone the next year.

It will be very interesting to see how many kids in this current environment actually graduate.

He’s right about the NIL and high major college sports generally.

On specific teams, he isn’t connected anymore like he was back in the 80s and 90s when he was really dialed in on college hoops.

For example, Providence by all accounts has strong NIL, but he lumped them with us because both are smaller Catholic schools. The only thing he knows about the Hall is what went public after Pitino defended Sha. Other than that he doesn’t know anything about the Hall or most others.

Even St John’s he’s jumping on the bandwagon now but the reality is 95% of our boards knows more about them than he does.

I think the best is the car dealership from Syracuse story but the scariest by far is venture capitalists and private equity owning pieces of the Big10? That’s just beyond what I could have ever imagined for this

Not a big Francesca fan but he knows more about the Hall than you give him credit for. Back in the PJ days post '89 when we were in the NCAAs he had PJ on his WMCA show a number of times. But I do agree that if not for the NCAAs he wouldn't know how to spell SHU. That 's the only time he spent time on college hoops.

Unfortunately he's right about the current state of college hoops.

Oh I agree he was locked into the Hall back in the day. In the mid-late 80s and early/mid 90s especially. He was Brent M's "stats" guy before he made it on WFAN so he covered an enormous amount of college football and basketball and was very dialed into the scene and many teams, both Big East and elsewhere. Ultimately between the connection with Brent and him gaining acclaim on WFAN he parlayed that into a studio gig at CBS and covered both regular season games and the NCAA tournament. He famously made the bet with IMUS where he predicted we would go to the final 4.

When the page turned to the 2000s, I found his level of knowledge to be much less about college basketball generally. He was no longer involved in CBS. St. John's stopped being good on a regular basis, so they weren't getting as much WFAN coverage as they did in the 90s. Many of his contemporaries or sources of information moved on. He was still connected to certain coaches like Majerus and Calhoun during that timeframe, and even Calipari to an extent, but I found him to be not nearly as "in the know" as he was in the past.

More recently, he knew Jay Wright from Hofstra and became very Nova-focused when Wright made his first final 4 run and especially when Jay's later teams won their titles, and would have Wright on a fair amount or talk about his relationship with Wright. But he was much more focused on teams or coaches, like Wright.

My point was that in recent years he has no clue about what transpires at Seton Hall. Unlike the PJ years or the immediate post-PJ years. He likely only knows about the NIL-piece with us because Pitino made that comment publicly supporting and defending Sha, and he started paying attention to St. John's again last year when they hired Pitino, but especially now with their current record (he's a total bandwagon fan IMO). He also has a relationship with our favorite booster Repole through horse racing and had Repole on for that famous rant years ago when he went after SJU's then-incompetent administration.
