Game Thread: Pirates vs. Monmouth

This game was way too close because of an obsession of playing the starters. Really no other way around it. This team is in a terrible place when you look at the Big East conference play coming up.

I’ll take the excitement of the bench in the first half tonight as a win. We have not seen that for most of the season (and sadly none in the 2nd half). Not a smile after the game from any of our guys, which is concerning. Not sure what is going on internally with this team.
My take also. The backups will struggle against the better teams in the conference, but at least it gives some hope for the future and it's probably a better brand of basketball. Unfortunately, "so far" when you add up the style and skillset of the starters there hasn't been a good flow or chemistry. The coach feels that group of starters offers the best chance to win. Many of us disagree.

When Brown was in with the other subs..the tempo of the game changed in our favor.
We became a step quicker on defense and offense.
Yet Shaheen says on the post game that he‘s trying to get him to play with more energy in practice and hasn’t seen it. I don’t get it, As others have said ball was actually moving with him in and and so was the team. Kadary had 5 turnovers running point, maybe play him off the ball and let Brown run it.

The fact that Sha made subs at the 3 minute mark in the first half when our second team extended the lead to 16 points is a major issue. Why give up the momentum, why put a pin in it? Let the momentum die naturally or run it into the half. He’s not proving himself as a coach by any stretch

He also said he wants him to play at a quicker pace. I don't get that because it looks like his pace is more composed and allows for more motion in the offense?

Can’t trust a word sha is saying. It’s all excuses. He lets Dawes run the offense at the end of the first half with his ridiculous dribbling and no pace / tempo.

That mid range shot to ice the game was pretty sweet as were his clutch FTs.
he gets credit for hitting the shots, but if you look at both those plays:

1) the jumper was after a few seconds of not even looking to move or pass the ball and decides to take the lowest value shot he could possibly take (yes he hit it)

2) the foul shots came after refs bailed him out for what should have been a horrific turnover late in the game

both of those were preceded by an offensive foul when the game was on the line. yes he got the 4 points, but didnt make one smart decision down the stretch, and overall played a terrible game.

He's a good player and our best player. But your point is well taken. He gets talked about in a way I find mystifying at times.
at this point nobody on the board thinks hes going to the nba. nobody. people like to pretend the board is still saying this

Disagree. And the second him and Dawes have a very good game together I’m sure there will be several lining up to tell me how I was wrong to be a bit more cautious about projecting them to be as good as any backcourt in the country.

The irony of course is I’d love to be wrong. Sign me up tomorrow for that outcome. I just try to be objective with this stuff.

nba doesnt have room for a slow guard that cant shoot at all. hes not a matchup advantage in the nba like he is in college.

I agree with you. KR has been on the NBA radar since his freshman season because of his combination of size, length, skill and athleticism. I just don’t see him as first round pick and never have, even now when he’s having the best season to date he’s ever had by a long shot. That’s no knock on KR the player. He’s a good college guard with the potential to be a level above that IMO on the collegiate level. I just think the bar for a kid to make the league is so high because those players are so ridiculously good.

But if he strings together some really good games, and especially if him and Dawes do together, bookmark this post. You watch. Me and others who haven’t set those lofty expectations will be told how wrong we are etc.

Those are some big ifs. Other than his inability to shoot, he lacks the killer instinct that gets a player lacking a certain skill to the next level. From everything we were told, he was going to step up as a leader this year. His perimeter shooting has gone backwards and his demeanor is the same. He will have games where he takes over and puts the team on his back. Then he will have games where he takes the night off. I don’t see him getting a sniff in the NBA. He doesn’t look like he wants it bad enough.

Spot on. I know it’s a terribly small sample size but Brown is actually the truest point guard on the team in that he moves the ball and thinks pass first. Kadary has real overall skills but not a true point. Al D. Is a fish out of water running point, nothing about it comes natural to him.

Browns steal and finish were impressive
BTW NgaNga caused that turnover with his long arms forcing a lollipop pass by the Monmouth inbounder.

NgaNga also got in the game and threw the nice back door pass for the Coleman dunk. He has athleticism the team desperately needs. Have to let him play through mistakes.

Wusu only played 12 minutes. It’s a start. Take away the 1 and I’ll be happy. But it probably won’t matter much to overall results.

Agreed. He got himself in the doghouse when EHE was out and he was forced to play the 5… let the kid get some minutes on the wing

The best guard on the court that excelled in ALL facets of the game was not Kadary, Dawes or any SHU player. The kid who impressed me with talent as a guard was Xander Rice. If anyone impressed NBA scouts in attendance it was Rice. So what does that say about our starting guards?

Rice (-5) had a strange game. He shot well from the arc, 4-8, but terribly inside the 3 point line, 1-11. To his credit he did have 5 steals and 5 assists.

Coleman did a very good defensive job on him and IMO it was he not Rice who was the most impressive player on the court.

That said Richmond (-2) and Dawes (-11) really struggled and were bailed out by Brown (+18) and Coleman (+20) .

Rice also had only 1 turnover in 39 minutes and was 6 for 7 with free throws too!

I agree that Coleman was very impressive but given Coleman was surrounded by more talent (supposedly) Rice played a much bigger role in leading a less talented team to a close upset win on the road. So I give him the edge.
