Gordon Calls Players' Meeting

In the past 6 years has a players meeting ever lead to good results ? Usually it was the beginning of the end.
I still have hope with this great group of players.

They can meet all they want. We aren't that good compared to the other teams in the league.
And our coach is at the bottom. Spacing, defending the 3, free throws. 6 years.

DG should handle the postgame presser every game

“We had come off a really tough battle at Villanova Wednesday night and guys had logged a lot of minutes,” Willard said. “We got down 19 and sometimes guys just don’t have it. It’s as simple as that.”

The coach added, “Sometimes you’ve got to see what other guys can do when you’re down 19. There was no benching.”

Asked about post-Villanova fatigue, the players balked.

“That’s coach just trying to give us excuses, but at this point we’re in the Big East, and every game is going to be tough,” Whitehead said. “There’s no time for excuses.”

The coach needs to stop giving excuses...I cant believe anything he says anymore!

Typical reaction for this younger generation.

IW wanted the crowd at the game, they came. He stayed home.

And then he blames the crowd.

Yep, pass the blame.

Fans pay good money and sacrifice their time to come out and support that team. As these kids mature maybe they'll appreciate that more. He needs to get over himself. Welcome to the Big Boy World where you're expected to produce and if you don't, you take responsibility.

Then the team gets embarrassed, play like garbage, and he ends up on the bench and this is the reaction? Revealing. Toughen up. The kids strolls into this program with nothing but hype and has been nothing more than a headache and underachieving player.

I was there, no wholesale booing, a little heckling directed at the coach[not a whole lot of it, really]. If anything, when the guys whittled it down to 14 twice, the crowd started to come alive, just to be immediately quieted by a Creighton offensive answer or 2. The worst thing was watching people start to depart with 8 minutes still remaining.

Boos directed at paying good money to watch the second string play for the majority of the game...coaches and players should be asking why that was the case.

We sell our souls to get these kinds of kids. Beg them to come.
And we wonder why they don't respect us or value their educations?

Funny, but we never got this kind of crap from the Canarias kids. They were happy to be here. Sure, they lost but so do the guys we have now. AND the CBA guys never ever quit.

Am really sick over this.

What happened to no social media this year? First sign of trouble and boom...

These players really need to grow up and get over themselves. I don't know if what Gordon is attempting to do has been tried in the past or not, but it's a good thing. They have a week off before playing in Providence next weekend. We'll see.

Players didn't quit yesterday - they were fired. I'm sure all three would have loved to get back into the game but, per IW, they were sat and not told why, and they never had the chance to return.

Those are not the only options. Real coaches get kids with no different baggage than our kids have, or more, and succeed. I see this as about willard and leadership.

I wonder how we react to a boss with a record of failure if we think it is hurting our careers? We are bailing asap.

Yes. Dick so right. In the ad business it wasn't the account you worked on that mattered, it was WHO you worked for.

It's called leadership. You can be knowledgable about something but if you can't connect, lead, motivate, it's meaningless as a coach. KW doesn't have "it". Six years in; painfully obvious.

I truly believe at times we the fans are making more out of these situations. We are
over analyzing everything that happens or is said.

I heard Gordon's clip on Hall line. Sounded like he just wanted to show some
leadership, get the guys together so they could stay on the same page. I just don't
sense any large issues. That's how I see it anyway.

I wish I could agree with this, but this is the 6th year of a proven track record. We constantly have drama and it constantly leads to us losing games.

Let's see if they go out there and respond.

Maybe we are but we've seen this movie before. One of your starters curses out the coach and gets benched for a half. The coach talks to him but his play has not improved and he gets benched yesterday. Then the team has two lousy practices leading into the Villanova game. Then the coach benches three starters for the remainder of the Creighton game and doesn't tell them why. Then a first-year player calls a players only meeting. And this is the stuff we know. I'm not sure how you can dismiss all of that.

This team will probably collapse like every other year under Williard. I would love to hear an explanation why this year will be different. I respect Gordon's effort and he is a true leader. However, this team led by williard is dysfunctional. Coach appears to be in over his head. Sorry to be so negative but that is my observation based on the past six years. I hope I am wrong but not counting on a successful season after the events over the past few games.

I think we have 2 very emotional players that are big parts of this team. One's emotions
are dictated by how the game is going. I'd say the other one has lost his focus for the last couple of games. Gordon is not a first year player. He's a 5th year player who has been to the
NCAA's and knows what it takes. Let's see what happens in the next couple of weeks. That's all I'm saying.

I am still baffled that Gordan called a team meeting but the coach didn't say anything about getting the team together to hammer out whatever is going on. He doesn't have the leadership qualities for a head coach. I am hoping that the powers at SHU are seeing what is happening again.

I feel for the guys on the team. Some of them are still drinking the same Kool Aid that KW initially gave them. Some have weened themself off the Kool Aid and are seeing how ineffective he is as a leader. They in turn are challenging him to see what he will do.

This is not going to turn out well. Give the whistle to Shaheen now and see what he can do with this group of guys.

So we lost to Creighton. I'll tell you guys what, a lot of quality teams would have lost to Creighton the way they played yesterday. You guys who are right back on the "Willard sucks, the same thing happens to us every year, now we have no chance this year" bandwagon are really a disgrace. You should really step back and take a look at yourselves in the mirror. In the end, you may be right. But as of now, the reality is we have one loss to Villanova--at Nova with a lot of home cooking from the refs--and one home loss to a Creighton team that played really well. That is NOT a reason to give up on this team!

I was not happy to see our best players sitting out at the end of the game yesterday, but unlike a lot of you I gave Willard the benefit of the doubt because clearly our starting rotation was not getting the job done and in that situation a good coach tries other things. And guess what, the guys he brought in actually did better than our starters and closed the gap. Might we have done better with Isaiah, Angel and Desi in? Maybe, but we sure didn't earlier in the half. And if you stop and think about it, Willard proved yesterday that Rashed Anthony, Braeden Anderson and Myles Carter all can match of effectively with the likes of Geoffrey Groselle. And you know what, that's a damn powerful thing to know as this team moves deeper into conference play against other teams with big guys. Suddenly now we know that we have a lot of guys who can play effective D in the paint without a need to be afraid of giving fouls, and other coaches know we have a lot of guys who can take fouls, so just going after Angel no longer looks like such a viable option for them. This kind of stuff matters and I presume Willard was taking the opportunity to establish it while our starters were having a bad day. Making some lemonade out of lemons if you will.

I do not think Willard is a great coach (read any of my posts from last season), but I am not giving up on his ability to get better. But you guys who just sit there and say that because we had one bad game this year it's undeniable proof that Willard sucks and that our season is doomed (despite the obviously deep and talented roster) are really a piece of work. You should be ashamed of yourselves if you call yourselves Pirate fans. Out of one side of your mouths you say Willard quit on the team in the second half; out of the other side of your mouths YOU quit on the team and say our season is over! Out of one side of your mouths you say Isaiah needs to learn to be more controlled on social media (I agree but he's getting better); out of the other side of your mouths you go using social media in the most destructive, negative way I can think of, in a way that puts Isaiah's little frustrated tweet to shame!

Why don't you try living up to our motto? A little more Hazard Zet Forward on this season please. If you're giving up on it at the first sign of adversity, YOU are quitters and losers, period.

I dont think the fans are giving up. i think most of them are worried that the team is giving up...again.

bottom line is they had a players meeting. there must have been a reason.

Obviously not all of the fans are giving up (hey, I'm a fan), but some of the stuff above is disgusting.

LOL! Groselle was 3-4 with 9 points AFTER Delgado went to the bench for good.

As much as I hate to say it (and it's nothing personal!), I agree, for the most part.

I've been pretty clear that bringing Willard back was a colossal mistake, and I never warmed to this team because there are a handful of really unlikeable kids who conspired against teammates last year. I've had a smirk on my face all season, figuring what we might expect to eventually see, even if I hope we don't.

But jimmy is right: it's one game. It was a really bad game, that went 15-plus minutes of game time with three of our best players on the bench, so make if that what you will. But really, it's one game. I'm kind of surprised at the outpouring of negative emotion. I get it, where it's coming from, but one game does not illustrate a trend.

Yeah, this could be the beginning of the annual meltdown, but let's wait until it happens to live in it. There are some big games coming up; let's see what happens. We could be swimming in utter chaos again in three weeks, but let's see. If it comes to that, I'll pass out the torches and pitchforks I've had ready since last March. I'll be ready for that. But if you had a lick of faith at any point this season, hold onto it. We haven't necessarily imploded yet.

It's only one game.
