Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Grant Bilmeier spoke at a Phi Kaps and Friends Lunch at The Student Center on campus on Friday, May 11. 36 people were there.

Here’s a summary of what he said:

2017-2018- Was a good year. The NC State Tourney win was a great win. Had Desi been more than 70%, we might have beaten Kansas. ( Paraphrasing here).

His comments about the players for next season:

Mamu- almost 100% healed from his knee surgery. Will be doing open gym workouts shortly and will be playing for the Georgia National Team for a month this summer.

Taurean Thompson-Working very hard. “The most skilled forward we’ve had in a long time" Good handle and became a better rebounder because of going head to head with Angel in practice everyday.

Romero Gill- A rim protector at 7’1”. Plays above the rim, unlike Angel who plays below it. We might see lots of lobs this year.

Quincy McKnight- Excellent defender, very quick- a natural scorer.

Myles Powell- Also working hard. And because of his discipline and work ethic is a role model for the younger players.

Myles Cale- Most athletic player. Long wing defender.

Mike Nzei-working a 10 week, 10 hours a day internship at Cantor Fitzgerald this summer in the City. Will have to squeeze in summer workouts somehow. Another role model for players and recruits. Sends money home to Nigeria.

Jared Rhoden- “Plays ridiculously hard!” He has a chip on his shoulder with every possession.

Anthony Nelson- I missed the comment.

The Current Seniors
All will graduate on time. The Academic Support staff worked very hard with the players to make this happen.

Angel has worked out with Rockets and Spurs. His strengths are hard work and having a nose for the ball . Will never be a marquee player but could be very solid.

Desi and Deeno have worked out with the Nets and Oklahoma City respectively.

Summer at Walsh Gym
Players from other schools work out with each other and I think, with our guys too. NJIT, Rider, FDU and other local schools represented. In fact, we have to turn guys away. Walsh is The Jersey Place in the summer. Used to be the Jersey Shore Basketball League.

Finally: Grant is great on his feet. A most likeable guy who really knows his stuff. He could go far in the coaching profession.

(Would appreciate other attendees filling in/adding to what I've missed)
