Nice job by Willard and the team. Very good win.

Was a pretty physical game and a very streaky one. You saw the good in us and the bad. A great burst in the second half when the team came out with a much improved level of tenacity. Obviously didn't like the near-collapse, but we responded well and fought hard.

Good character-building win, I hope.

We have a lot of trouble in the half-court offense. Tonight we basically had nobody at the foul line for long stretches and were just driving like on the playground or bombing a lot of 3's. Driving is fine - and we're good at it - but if you're going to drive and get fouled, my God, make the FT's, LOL.

If we could ever compliment that ability with more motion, we'd be in business. We didn't see the crisp movement we saw in the second half against Ole Miss. So far that's the outlier for this season.

Credit to UGA, too. They're a good defensive team. Big and physical across the board and they have that small, quick guard. They are #23 in the country in KenPom's defensive efficiency stat, 19th in EFG%, 53rd in 2PT, etc.

What did he exactly do to cause this win?

I didn't notice him changing offenses during the zone UGA used.

Solid game tonight. Defense had best performance of season, carting ton played a great game. Whitehead was great in the last few minutes of game. Not sure if Georgia is so do this year, but this is a game we really needed to win at home.

I thought Willard did an exceptional job of substituting tonight except for his use of Nzei. He probably
had a matchup reason, but we did extend the lead to 9 or 10 with Nzei and Singh on the court.

I'm not sure they have any plays to run, but it was basically IW and Carrington in that last 5 minutes. KW
did not have any hand in that part. I didn't like that.

Good job by KW having them ready to play defense tonight and they showed very good intensity for most
of the 2nd half.

So no one can say anything KW did? Solid Defense and Street Ball offense led to a win?

Yes we needed it. (hopefully) good win against a P5 team.

But I saw a lot of not good signs in this game. We need to correct a lot for WSU, Nova, Butler, GTown, Prov, etc etc

According to Carino, Willard ripped into them at halftime. It worked on the defensive end. They played tough in the second half. Georgia shot 56% in the first half (60% from 2PT) and 36% in the second (44% from 2PT).

We also seemed to bottle up the lanes more in the second half and UGA was settling for 3's because we were more active. They took just 5/25 from 3 in the first, 13/22 from 3 in the second.

Defensive intensity won this game. I really liked how hard they worked on D tonight. Good physical game and well coached by Willard. Angel had a horrible first half but had some big boards and plays down the stretch. Khadeen was a stud and Zeke finished the game for us.

Fair enough. Thanks.

Woulda been nice to see a change in Offensive schemes when they played a zone.

But the D did pick up in the second half.

Street ball will win is very few games in the BE. No matter how good our D is.

Nice, solid win. Good D in the second half coupled with attacking the rim with good, strong finishes and/or drawing fouls.

Good for Willard...

“He said we were playing like a bunch of babies, like freshmen,” sophomore guard Khadeen Carrington said. “So we took it upon ourselves to play like we’re supposed to.”

...

“That’s probably the maddest I ever saw him, ever,” sophomore guard Isaiah Whitehead said. “He expects more out of us and when we’re not doing what we can, it makes him furious. It was a big point at halftime, to see him fired up and to see how much he thinks we can accomplish. It got us fired up to play better defense.”

It's going to be a work in progress all season long. If we don't get better at it , it'll likely cost us during the Big East season. We nearly blew it tonight because of it, but the team does a lot of other things well and that carried us through.

We have a bunch of really athletic who can drive and finish, but the flow and spacing is important. We'll see.

I thought subbing in three guys when we were up 13-9, including subbing for Dr and KC who had the best starts, was a large reason why rge went on a run to our largest deficit. He routinely takes out a hot hand.

And our set offense is awful.

Tough play by our guys. Solid win. A nice win over a good team and we didn't play a great game.

This is a good win over a major conference team that destroyed us last year. I see nothing to complain about. The object is to win & that's what we did.

Tom K

It's a great outcome for the team for these reasons and hangs a quality non-conference win on our wall.

I disagree. Georgia is not a good team. Half court offense was bad. Whitehead had many bad moments in the game. He turned the ball over too much and did not take good shots and was out of control for most of the game. He got his points in the end but this is not what you want to see out of him.

Delgado in the first half was getting his ass handed to him by Maten. In the second half, his energy and defensive presence became better.

I did not like the substituting pattern used by Willard. Desi was having a great game in the opening of the game and then Willard sits him for 5 minutes. After DRod gets his thirds foul of the second half, Willard did not put him back in the game until the 9 minute mark. You have to bring hi. In earlier.

I am happy for the win but there is so much. Not to like.

Agreed. KW bashers should credit him for a win when they kill him for a loss.

I always told the parents of my players that the payers get all the credit when the team wins & if we ever lose (no good coach ever admits they might lose) I get all the blame. Fact of life.

Great job team. Especially DR, IW & especially KC, without whom the ship would have beed sunk. And I guess I need to be PC (politically correct for those in Trenton) yahoo for KW. Actually, he did nothing wrong to jeopardize the win which is a big plus.

I was at the game. Did not get the impression Georgia is that good, but i look at it as a good win.

I dont think Willard was THAT tremendous, without Whitehead in the game we were nothing until later when KC picked it up. It seemed like the entire team was just those two guys with sprinkes of Desi when he wasnt in foul trouble.

We played solid D, and alot of times we played solid D for 25 seconds and Georgia would hit a random jumper... but they did not look that impressive as a whole.

I noticed it will take more time for Singh to get used to the college game. This is OK.

Also thing I noticed was that we need to finish And 1s

It was a game of runs, our lack of offensive game plan would cause them to come back, our individual talent caused us to regain the leads. Not much O from the big men today, but good on D.

CERN you don't know what you are talking about...he took Desi out because he had 2 fouls in the first half
And once he got HS third he had to take him out and once he put him in he got his 4 foul not much after.I think
Willard did a decent job subbing tonight especially with Desi.

Desi had one foul at halftime and I think none when he was taken out the first time. Then early second half he charged and then committed a regular foul a minute later and had to sit with three. Willard's first subbing was for him and Khadeen (and angel too but he needed a break) and it ruined our early momentum imo. He does this massive subbing too often, and he too often subs for the hot hand like he did tonite.

+1. Good win. Good payback. Good to see Angel pick it up, but part of this is on KW. Angel only had one touch in the first half. How do you not run a half dozen plays each half through him?

Lots still to work on but take it and move on.

Maybe KW's half time "worst ever tirade" is THE break out moment for this coach. We all have them in life, maybe this is it for him.
We've questioned his visible passion, maybe it's finally come out. Sure hope so.

Angel was doubled. Georgia game plan was to shut him down. They were able to shut him down but it allowed others opportunities and they came through.

When we got into double bonus Willard told them to drive the lane more. We did that a few times and drew several fouls, some of them "and ones".

Desi had 2-3 dumb fouls. We need him to stay in the game and not go over the back 80 ft from their basket.

Georgia was picked 6th in the SEC and so this was no cupcake.

Flagman looked liked a weenie, running around only five (Fabulous) Saphires.

We drove the ball from the opening tip.

I hope this was a seminal moment. The defense was much better. Great d by zeke and Khadeen drew two charges. And real good hustle by all.

It was a good win, but I wouldn't categorize it as great. Georgia is a mess now. Carrington had a really good game and the defense was hustling and good for most of the game. I'm glad we got this one, but to me it does not look at all like a quality win.

I thought the shot selection last night was pretty good for the most part. Once we started going more to the basket it really made a difference. Hopefully we can build on this. Can't get too optimistic because we've seen Willard coached teams play well in Nov and Dec only to regress in 2nd half of seasons.

That is the true measuring gauge for Willard; can he get the team to play at a consistent level for the entire season.

You summarized it correctly and this IS a good win . Wins against power 5 teams are important for us as a program and for our conference. SH now 2 - 0 against the SEC.

I agree that Georgia is not a "great" win in terms of Top 25, road, etc. However, walking out of the area last night it struck me as a "great" win for this group for a few reasons, including (a) Georgia will be a good, quality non-conference win based on RPI (maybe Top 50, 75 at worst), (b) the "revenge" factor and Willard coaching that up all week; need to respond to it, (c) how Willard got after them and it made a difference, and (d) nearly blowing the game but hanging tough.

Georgia plays grinding, rugged type of game. Sort of like our teams with Louis Orr. It doesn't look pretty, but they are tough and physical.

like.

Whitehead technically only had 3 turnovers in 34 minutes, which is good for him, but I agree he took a lot of bad shots and settled for far too many 3's, which is not his game. He also didn't have a single assist. But he also made some highlight reel, tough plays off the drive. He needs time to find this balance between PG and scoring guard. I don't think he's a natural point, but he can get there.

Still think our PG play is our biggest area of concern and we need to see sustained improvement before we start facing the talented and deep backcourts of the Big East. Gordon can be shaky, too.

If nothing else it was an important win. We had 3 remaining OOC games to get a resume boosting win, and this was by far the easiest. Loosing it would have meant a real battle to get another good good win before January. If we can win in Foggy Bottom or beat Wichita, those will be nice feathers in our cap heading into conference play.

Good win! A LOT to improve upon though. Really surprised how many people are saying this is a resume win. Georgia has 2 losses and it's not even December yet. Hopefully they turn it around.
