Great Win

grinding, rugged type of game

Mrs BP and I were actually shocked during the game. It seems like the NCAA has completely abandoned its "points of emphasis" on contact fouls. It looked pretty much like a rugby match out there, especially in the starkest of all possible contrasts to the game in Cancun, where our women were called for breathing on their opponents. Honestly, the game last night looked like a fist fight, not a basketball game.

Good win! A LOT to improve upon though. Really surprised how many people are saying this is a resume win. Georgia has 2 losses and it's not even December yet. Hopefully they turn it around.

They should be a good team so this should register as "good" win later in the season.

Georgia returns a number of starters from an NCAA Tournament team, they were picked 5th out of 14 teams in the SEC preseason poll, and they were in the 50's in KenPom's ratings coming into last night's game (now 60th; SHU is 71st). They also have an all-SEC guard, FWIW.

Ole Miss was 9th.

Maybe KW's half time "worst ever tirade" is THE break out moment for this coach. We all have them in life, maybe this is it for him.
We've questioned his visible passion, maybe it's finally come out. Sure hope so.

Here's hoping. That's all we can do.

Far from magnificent. Individual efforts from KC and IW were what fueled the win. Defense was good. But you could clearly see players had to overcome the dreadful offensive system they are put in if they wanted to score points. They have to work against the defense, and themselves. Glad KC and IW could hit the lane and draw fouls and get buckets.

Your overwhelming support for the team and our coach is just flat-out incredible. Keep up the great work!

What did he exactly do to cause this win?

I didn't notice him changing offenses during the zone UGA used.

This team has clearly gotten better every time out on the court this year. I wasn't expecting 5-1 when I saw the first game of the season. This team is showing progress. They are moving the ball much better. The defense is getting better. The only thing I didn't like about last night was we had 2 chances to stick the dagger in them and neither time we did it. Up 49-40 and up 56-46, neither time were we able to put them away and both times I think it was because we went away from moving the ball. And while the assists may not show how well we moved the ball, a big key to the win was Carrington beating his man off the dribble, scoring all of our first 10 points of the second half that way. We found a mismatch and we used it to our advantage for quite some time last night, maybe the coach deserves some credit for that.

What does it have to do with support? Seems to me like people are assessing the game. Guess you didnt see me being one of the few to actually cheer for the team during the game. Dont give me any of that support nonsense.

Is this a troll account?

Nice job by Willard and the team. Very good win.

Was a pretty physical game and a very streaky one. You saw the good in us and the bad. A great burst in the second half when the team came out with a much improved level of tenacity. Obviously didn't like the near-collapse, but we responded well and fought hard.

Good character-building win, I hope.
This was a good win and a solid second half to build on. Some positives, and some cause for concern.

Positives:
- Ish can guard multiple positions and is emerging as one of our best defenders. He is logging excellent rebounding numbers and may be among the top 7 rebounders in the BE so far. Needs to develop a mid-range jumper and needs to shore up free throw shooting.

- Whitehead played with an intensity at both ends of the floor, which was one of the reasons we won this game. If we had better shooters, he would have had a few assists. Limited turnovers by the guards is a great sign.

- Carrington attacks the basket with a kamikaze-like intensity, but he also looks like he is getting more confident shooting from long range. He's typically an excellent free throw shooter but only shot 50 percent against Georgia. He plays so hard and attacks the basket so much, may have been tired. Needs a little more rest or Willard needs to draw up some better offensive plays so our guards don't have to work so hard on offense.

Delgado woke up in the second half - let's hope he brings the same intensity for two halves next game.

Desi looks comfortable - though he committed some silly fouls so far from the basket that limited his playing time. Need to call a few more plays for Desi. He's good in isolation - reminds me of Adrian Griffin - something good happens when he has the ball and he's a decent foul shooter.

Willard: Motivated the team to play much better defense in the second half.

Negatives:

Defense: First half was awful - Georgia shot 56 percent and got open shots throughout the paint. One of their forwards had a career game. One of their starting forwards was injured.

Outside shooting: 30 percent from 3 isn't going to get it done in Big East play. If a few more players can't find range from 3, we need one of the forwards or Anderson to step up with an inside the arc game - it's got to be Ish or Anderson - we can't survive with Whitehead and Carrington just driving into the zone to draw contact and get to the line. Either they will wear out or be so predictable and easy to defend. Singh needs to mature quickly as an outside shooter.

Movement without the ball: We will see loads of zone this year. The team needs to move without the ball and find gaps in the zone to get some easy shots. We work too hard on offense - kids often resort to desperation drives. We are not going to bust zones with our outstanding 3-point shooting - at least not yet. The good teams find easy ways to score at least some of the time.

+1 to all points. Especially on Ish. Also think Desi is one of our best players.

The offense needs a TON of work.

Wow that was a quick deflection. Just completely ignoring that you tried to call me out for my support of the team. Guess thats a maneuver used when your, well, wrong.

I dont think you could pinpoint "my disdain" for the coach in anything i posted. Last nights game was all about IW and KC carrying us when the offense was yet again incredibly stagnant. Georgia wasnt exactly stifling. Am I gonna praise him for yelling at our players at halftime? No thats what his job is. These things seem so special because its taken him 6 years to figure it out. On the flip side i want it to be known im not saying he had a bad game or anything. I just think it was about the effort given by a few individuals.

Not everyone shares your misguided enjoyment of our coach, deal with it.

Shuathlete, pinpoint your disdain? Don't have to, your avatar says it all. In any case, I'm so sorry. Forgot that praising Coach Willard here is an extremely horrendous crime.......unless you're the party who started this thread.

Praise willard all you want. But many will not agree that coaching won the game last night.

Praising Willard has absolutely no basis. And again, offering criticism doesnt mean i dont offer support. Theyre not exclusive.

Whats wrong with my avatar? It was an action shot of Willard during the Marquette game. Im into photography.

This was a good win. Let's see if we can build on it and improve each game. Our fanbase will retain its skepticism because in 5 years we have never seen a Coach Willard team improve throughout the Big East season and playing their best ball in Feb and March. We want to see that badly and are all in for this year's team. We have the talent...

The offense needs a TON of work.

THIS. Impressed by the improvement on defense, but I got depressed watching the same offense we see every year. That they won this game despite it makes me feel only a little better. I noticed that the weave was run at 1.5x speed, though. We are way too easy to defend.
