South Orange, N.J. — Seton Hall head men's basketball coach Shaheen Holloway formally announced his full coaching staff for the upcoming 2022-23 season on Monday.
Rasheen Davis, Ryan Whalen and Corey Lowery will serve as Holloway's assistant coaches. All three previously served under Holloway over the course of his four-year tenure at Saint Peter's. Davis and Whalen — the latter of which was on staff at Seton Hall for six seasons from 2010-16 — were both assistants at Saint Peter's last season as they helped lead the Peacocks on their run to the Elite Eight. Lowery has an extensive track as a head coach with New Jersey ties and most recently served as head coach of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
Kevin Coyle (coordinator of basketball operations), Steven Cruz (director of basketball operations) and Morgan Williams (video coordinator) all served key areas under Holloway at Saint Peter's last season en route to winning the MAAC Tournament championship and advancing to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Also joining the Pirates' support staff is Queens, N.Y. native Sean Crawford (director of player personnel), who had been a player development coach at IMG Academy since October 2020 and has worked with athletes that have reached NCAA Division I, the WNBA and the NBA.
Returning to The Hall is graduate assistant Marcus Matthews, who enters his second season with the program, and Kevin Lynch (coordinator of basketball operations), who was a men's basketball student-athlete with the Pirates and has been with the program since graduating in 2014.
Davis, who brings a wealth of experience and a winning background as a Division I coach, will be entering his second season working under Holloway. Davis' impressive resume includes 10 NCAA Tournaments trips as a part of coaching staffs at six different institutions (Louisville, Pitt, Xavier, Manhattan, VCU, Saint Peter's). He made multiple trips to the Big Dance as an assistant coach on staff at Xavier and VCU. His work as associate head coach at Manhattan propelled the Jaspers to two MAAC Tournament championships in 2014 and 2015. Following a one-year stint at Arizona State where the Sun Devils were in position for an NCAA berth prior to the cancelation of the seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Davis joined Holloway and Saint Peter's in time for 2021-22 season where the Peacocks won the 2022 MAAC Tournament title and advanced to the Elite Eight. A native of The Bronx, N.Y., Davis was an assistant coach at Rice High School from 2005-07 and assisted on the U17 squad for the legendary New York Gauchos AAU program.
Whalen will be entering his fifth season as an assistant coach under Holloway. When including his six years with Holloway on staff at Seton Hall from 2010-16, this will be Whalen's 11th season working alongside the Pirates' first-year head coach. Following two seasons in his first assistant coaching role at Eastern Kentucky, Whalen joined the Peacocks in 2018-19 and he helped take the program to new heights. Saint Peter's registered three-consecutive seasons with 10-plus MAAC victories (2019-22), won the 2022 MAAC Tournament championship and advanced to the Elite Eight during Whalen's tenure. With the Pirates, Whalen served in various roles. The West Long Branch,, N.J. native was the Director of Basketball Operations during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons when the Pirates won the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament. He worked his way up to DOBO after starting as the Pirates' video coordinator in 2010-11, followed by director of player development and coordinator of basketball operations. Before Seton Hall, Whalen worked in the same capacity under former Pirate head coach Kevin Willard at Iona in 2009-10. A 2008 graduate of Saint Joseph's, Whalen played two years of junior varsity basketball for the Hawks before being named a student assistant coach by head coach Phil Martelli.
Lowery owns 24 years of coaching experience, including 16 years as a head coach. He spent the last two seasons as head men's basketball coach at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and previously served as director of player development under Holloway at Saint Peter's from 2018-20. Lowery and the staff at Saint Peter's helped build the foundation for future success in Jersey City. The Peacocks reached the semifinals of the 2020 MAAC Tournament that abruptly cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to his time at Saint Peter's, Lowery spent six years as head men's basketball Coach at Essex County College where the Wolverines made five consecutive appearances in the NJCAA Division II Tournament, finished as National Champion Finalist in 2014 and made it to the Final Four in 2016. As the head coach at Middlesex County College, Lowery led his team to the Elite Eight in the Division III NJCAA Tournament in 2008. His overall head coaching record is is an impressive 322-90.
Cruz has been on Coach Holloway's staff as director of basketball operations since the 2019-20 season. He was previously on the men's basketball staff at The College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, New York, where he served as an assistant men's basketball coach for the NCAA Division III program. Cruz also coached at the high school level for three years (2015-18) as an assistant varsity coach at LaSalle Academy in New York City. He was part of a coaching staff that guided the team to the 2017 Catholic High School Athletic Association NYS Championship, the 2017 NYS Federation Championship and the 2017 and 2018 Catholic High School Athletic Association City Division Championships. Cruz is a 2014 graduate of Siena College, where he was a four-year walk-on member of the men's basketball team and team captain during his senior year.
Williams served as Holloway's Director of Player Development/Recruiting Coordinator last season at Saint Peter's. Williams previously served as an assistant coach at Mount Aloysius College for three seasons. Prior to his time at Mount Aloysius, he worked on the staff of Mount St. Mary's University as head student manager from 2015-2018 and also served as a coordinator for the basketball's team camp. While at Mount St. Mary's, Williams helped coaches in practice, games and conditioning sessions. Williams graduated from Mount St. Mary's in 2018 with a degree in communications with a concentration in public relations.
Coyle joined Holloway's staff as Video Coordinator/Director of Player Personnel for the start of the 2021-22 season. Coyle arrived at Saint Peter's from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City where he served as an assistant coach for the Bloodhounds during the 2019-20 campaign. He had his hands in all aspects of the program, playing a vital role in the on-court development of the Bloodhounds. Coyle spent the previous season playing professionally in Malaga, Spain after graduating from SUNY New Paltz where he earned a Bachelor's of Science in communication.
Crawford arrives at The Hall after serving as a player development coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla since October 2020. At IMG, Crawford mentored athletes and helped them improve their basic fundamentals, skill development, agility, footwork, dribbling, shooting, critical thinking and game situations. His expertise grew following stops with the New York Knicks in gameday operations and community outreach, Los Angeles Clippers as head camp clinician, Jumpman LA as its head basketball trainer and NBPA Camp as a head clinician. Crawford has worked with athletes such as Breanna Stewart, Epiphany Prince, Danny Green, Hamidou Diallo, Maurice Harkless, Doron Lamb, Furkan Kormaz and Michael Beasley.
