Interesting Student POV

I can't believe that there are that many who are that shallow and ignorant of the importance of choosing a school for the right reasons!
I chose to attend Seton Hall because of their basketball program. Chalk me up as shallow and ignorant. I would just like to hope that at 21 years old, my grammar and sentence structure was on a different level than Ashton’s!

While misguided, at least he’s passionate about the program. If we become relevant again, this kid will probably go to games and support the program.

I think a ton of kids pick a school based on their sports- at least, its what gets them interested in the school

They see the atmosphere, and then they examine the school in greater detail. Very few kids pick the school that makes the most financial sense- a ton of them go because of the atmosphere and what they see on TV.

Its dumb to do, but its true. For the Hall the basketball program is our greatest marketing. Saint Peters got a huge enrollment response after their elite 8 run.

What a time to be alive.

Good basketball puts the school on the radar, we know that at least. The rest, who knows why people choose anything.

he’s got a point. It’s not a dumb thing to do. He’s investing 4 years of his life and potentially six figures worth of student loans.

SH is outside the top 150 in academic rankings and has a below average social scene. What differentiates Seton Hall from Montclair state for a local kid who wants to stay home for school? Basketball

There is one clear and significant reality this student is missing from his impassioned plea: the college athletic landscape has almost entirely changed since he first enrolled at Seton Hall. From his freshman to senior year, everything got turned on its head. There is no denying it. We were always a program that was tasked with doing more with less. That’s how it was. We had to fight a little harder for everything we got. Nothing came easy.

Now, because of the radical changes to college athletics, Seton Hall basketball is now more on the outside looking in than at any other time since joining The Big East. I could see how an attending student looking for continued success from the basketball program feels like the rug has been pulled out on their college experience, but acting like it can be fixed by flicking a switch isn’t going to solve anything.

Academic reasons for choosing a school should have little to do with rankings. Much like basketball recruiting rankings, once you get past the elites there's really not much to separate them. The gap between 100 and 200 isn't big. It's more about focusing on the specific program you're interested in, beginning with if a school even offers it and if so then going into how it differentiates itself and how those differentiators align with what you're looking for.

Yeah point being not much differentiates SH from Montclair state without the athletics (basketball) experience.

If you went through 3.5 years of school and walked away with the feeling "without basketball, Seton Hall is nothing" I feel very sorry.
in the kids defense he started college during the pandemic of isolated social experience and masking.

People getting grouchy and judgmental about this kid choosing a school because of sports is exactly the reason why Seton Hall will always be left in the dust.

This is the reality today. The overwhelming majority of teenagers are not making decisions based on academics, religion, finances, etc. They do it based on social scene and sports. Since the former is pretty much non existent, Seton Hall should be doubling down on its athletics reputation.

The men’s basketball team is the number one marketing tool the school has. They should be pouring as much money into it as possible. The practice facility is a decent start, but because SHU is decades behind on that, NIL is now suffering as a result. Not surprising from the Mr. Magoo of major college sports though

It's both the fault of the kid and the school. From the kid's perspective how did you not get involved with anything to find it to be nothing without basketball. From the schools perspective how is not felt everywhere that Seton Hall is more than just basketball.

He's probably an entitled spoiled brat.

He's from the Philly area. If he wanted such a great basketball experience, you'd think he would have gone to Villanova, Wright was still there.

I don’t think this excludes the fact that he made friends and got involved other ways. But we all know successful basketball team and highlights of being at the games lives longer than memories of the fraternity parties. In recent years the Shavar 3pointer of SJ, the Big East championship, the Michigan state and Maryland games in 2019 are some of the proudest moments of being a SH alum. A kid chose SH hoping for that, clearly he screwed up and I’m not sure posting this to Twitter was his best move. I’m just saying he’s got a point

Doesn't half this board think if we leave the BE the school will close? Now people are getting on this kid for stating the obvious? People go to SHU, in part, because of the bball team. SHU compared to most BE and major D1 schools has basically nothing going on on campus (midnight madness? Good concerts? 😂).

I went to shu for 2 reasons. It's program related to my chosen career path and it's bball team.

If you think otherwise. Get a grip on reality.

Good for this kid for calling out Felt, the team (seems they are not engaged at all on campus, interesting), and the admin.

I disagree that basketball should be THE reason you choose Seton Hall, but for many it is among the top reasons considered The entire student experience goes into the decision making process. Calling a student entitled or a brat because he is frustrated, seems awfully judgmental. I happen to agree that Seton has reaped tremendous benefits by its Big East basketball program.

Also, to all those who say they would be at just as many games if Seton Hall was in a lesser conference, I don't really believe that and hope we never have to test it.

This is what most millennials on this board deal with when discussing the on campus, community, etc issues of the school since 2000-2012 ish when a lot of us went to SHU.

And most posters who graduated 20-40 years before we went to SHU basically call us brats, entitled, lacking values, not mature, etc

Welcome to the mentality of many on this board: "Either you say SHU was the best experience in your life or you're an ass!"

What does SHU have that makes it stand out? Academics? Nope look at the rankings. Cost? Lol GTFO. Community/on campus activities/lifestyle? No. Basketball? .................

Basketball can definitely enhance the experience, but if your college experience is based on college basketball (when you're not a player), you missed out big time.

The attitude of the school itself, or at least those making decisions, seems to be stubbornly frozen somewhere around the LBJ/Nixon era. And of course that is also shared by some on this board.

Herein lies the root of all Seton Hall’s woes, far beyond basketball. The inability and frankly unwillingness to adapt. The school would rather cling to some bygone era and fade away into irrelevance than admit that wholesale changes (modernization) are needed if it ever wants to see growth again.

When did you graduate seton hall? If you ask anyone of the recent grads 2014-2022 you’ll get a version of this sentiment. South Orange has become worse and worse to the students

The time frame you bring up is very interesting to me. I still believe the school lost a ton of money at that time. With no inside knowledge on the subject, as an outsider I have to believe the school lost a ton of money from the fire. At that point in time they were cutting many things including athletic programs like wrestling. A family member was applying to Seton Hall at that time and was told think hard about his other choices because Seton Hall is cutting a lot of things right now probably because of money issues, who knows what they'll cut next. Good advice, bad advice is not the point, but it sure seems the people in that time frame didn't enjoy their experience as a whole. School was a top 5 party school before the fire.

This is from before SEC blondes became mainstream

As someone who grew up 15 minutes from campus I only became aware of the school at a young age because of the basketball team and going to games at the meadowlands, still remember the game where Jacky kaba hit the buzzer beater. But what this student is talking about is why I didn’t go to Seton Hall and I know of a bunch of friends who didn’t go for the same reasons. Let’s not bash the student. Everyone is entitled to there opinions on what they do with there college choices

The message is getting lost and misdirected.

The focus shouldn’t be on this one particularly student’s decision.

A student and fan is saying out loud and publicly that his school experience with our major sports team sucks.

That’s just sad and not right. You wonder why we have lost generations not donating or participating. Add this to the list of reasons.

Merry Christmas!

He's an entitled brat when he states "Please consider this as a wake up call." Um, excuse me??
AARP members: complain about lack of student excitement/engagement/involvement for several years in a row.

Student: explain the problems.

AARP members: "you're a brat!"

*Rinse and repeat*

There is a reason the vast majority of people post 2000 view shu one way and a reason boomers and elder gen x view it another way. Maybe the good ole boys club and admin need a wake up call?

But no no, let's just stick with the "you're an entitled brat who doesn't understand the world" because that has worked to date with SHU.
I'm a boomer who doesn't like the good ole boys club, the admin, and entitled brats. None of this should be news to anyone here. I also believe in showing a modicum of respect and this tweet showed none. A wake up call?
