Is Kevin Willard the problem?

it would be very surprising if Willard is fired. If he is not the coach next year it’s more likely because he takes another job but for the people out there asking who would you want to replace him or think there are no good coaches to go after are also wrong. Would need to target a younger coach that would view a Big East job as a big career move. You can bring back Holloway, or Griffin. Try to get Anthony Grant to leave Dayton for the Big East, Wes Miller (UNC Greensboro), Bob Richey (Furman), Toole (Robert Morris), Mcall (UMass), Mason (Wagner), Neptune (7 years as asst. at Nova).
There are plenty of guys that would view Seton Hall and the Big East has a great opportunity.
Again don’t think Willard gets fired, if he should or shouldn’t is everyone’s own opinion. Sure he’s done a great job building the program but I think he has reached his peaked as a coach, but to say there are no other viable options is just as ridiculous.
There are always plenty of low/mid major coaches seeking opportunity and top assistants across the area corridor

It's not mojo, it's recruiting. Willard has gotten very little in since BET win in 2016. If Powell hadn't put us on his back the last two years, we would have been either at or below .500.

Recruiting masks bad coaching. With our talent not there or not have been developed, Willards flaws are very exposed.
What does Rutgers have? Jerry Carino wrote an article about coaches doing more with less, Pikiell and Willard. Rutgers may have one 4 star - Pike coaches different - plays the bench and has Calhoun energy. I like it - he’s turned around their program faster than Willard.

He shouldn't be fired. He should be criticized! Terrible, terrible job recruiting. Essentially gave Posh to St Johns, got beaten out last minute on Sanogo and coming off a Final 4 contending team completely failed with this recruiting class. Team looked flat and unmotivated toward the end of this season. Threw away games we shouldn't have lost to quality opponents and looks like they didn't show up for Butler and UConn. The performance in the second half versus an undermanned St Johns team showed no poise, no leadership and no guts. Terrible job. He should be taken to task. He can come back from this but can't get a pass on what transpired.
And Johnnies have stars who are sophomores and freshmen.

He played, you should have watched the game. But hopefully you didn’t. For your sanity.

I was so curious as to who "Hamilton" was that I was waiting for someone to get an answer. LOL.

Braziller said that Anderson benched Moore, who has been playing well off the bench for them. My guess is he didn't like some of those early 3s the kid was hoisting.

Anderson doesn't mess around. You go to class, practice hard and play his way or you don't play. He'll happily play his bench group because he's played 10/11 kids and won 400+ games along the way.

And that is the main problem with fanbase and enough of the population of board members...he is the chef that takes over at the restaurant that finally cooks the proteins well but the potatoes are glue and the sauce runs but the patrons are like well its still a bit better than it was
Lol you never cease to amaze me

And Johnnies have stars who are sophomores and freshmen.

They have 1 star, who was an unheralded recruit 2 years ago and now is one of the best players in the league.

Posh is a star freshman but he isn't close to being a star yet.

Anderson's teams are usually more about the whole than the parts. He finds ways to use kids effectively who fit what he wants to do and develops his entire roster. You saw that tonight, with them getting 26 monumental points from Wusu and Earlington who were a combined 9/13 from the field, 5/8 from 3 and also added in some boards and assists to boot. And he plays a little PG who hasn't done much all year who gave them some important minutes.

And Johnnies have stars who are sophomores and freshmen.
And their star freshman was ours to have...Tony Skinn and Willard took a "Long" shot with their choice instead and it paid off disastrously! What the heck were they thinking?!? 😡

Miller and McCall only logical ones there , grant isn’t leaving Dayton for SHU lol.

Not sure that's the answer.

I don't think there is a better answer than Willard. What the ceiling ever looks like is an open question. But we've seen "lows" and as bad as this last stretch has been, we know worse, and the last 5 years outweighs this horrid finish. I'm not sure what the hell happened to this team. If you told me we started the game with a 20-0 lead and lost, I wouldn't believe you. It was freaking agonizing to watch. I'm kind of numb to it now which is why I didn't post during or immediately after the game. Maybe we can get into that 4/5 game still (X down 8 to Marquette), beat the Johnnies, get a hampered Nova and catch some lightning in a bottle? I don't want the season to end and the NIT is worthless for this group.

Not that I'm advocating for removing Willard. But say the job opens this offseason. Wes Miller at UNC Greensboro, Bob Richey at Furman, Porter Moser at Loyola.

First call would be John Beilein and nobody else. When he turns us down, then you move to other candidates. Porter Moser? C'mon. St. John's nearly made that mistake and lucked into a great one in Mike Anderson.

Moser didn't want to come to SJU and he's coming to South Orange, lol.

Hypothetically, yes Beilein would be the guy and maybe Archie Miller if he gets dropped from Indiana. But you know Willard isn't going anywhere.

Agreed. The khadeen desi angel teams underperformed for that talent, but also werent complete teams
[/QUOTE]

Seriously, there are a lot of "incomplete" teams with a lot less talent than those teams that won a couple of tourney games. Can't stand the guy or the team but Boeheim and Syracuse comes to mind with wining a few games with teams that wouldn't have even earned a tourney bid if not for their brand name. Long list of mid majors who did the same.

Grant was the least soft player I have ever seen and prob the guy with the most heart in our entire program. grant wasn’t athletic but still was able to play in the BE. Not everything is on his coaching , look what he was able to do for Ish Delgado and Ro. Hell Ike has even improved.
Sorry, I saw an unathletic player who looked a lot like our bigs now getting stuffed wit regularity. Our bigs fade away, flip up weak shots and try to avoid contact rather than finishing through contact. Exactly how Grant played. How does our front court constantly get outrebounded by guards on the other team? How do we have a center who is blocking 3+ shots a game have the opponent scoring percentage on those blocks over 50%? That is poor coaching.

One glaring issue with Willard is his inability to recruit locally on the NJ/NY area. Outside of the Sanogo, Carrington, Desi, Whitehead class and the Powell the following year all which not coincidently was the most success he had. And he never parlayed that success to winning more big local recruits. All of his other local kids have been complete whiffs, Sina, Grennan, Wilson, Brodie, Singh, Walker. There is plenty of talent in the area and he seems to get absolutely none of it.

Willard is a good coach, but with definite limitation. He’s a terrible recruiter and his teams have no semblance of an offense. But he’s accomplished enough that firing him is not justified. Hence, we are stuck with a good coach...which may sound funny, but it’s true. All those NCAA appearances but only one win. That is particularly awful.

All we can hope for is that the incoming freshmen are as good as advertised. And that our next recruiting class has equally good talent...something Willard’s history does not reflect.

Some of the best coaches were not great players, Grand coaches his ass off and all of what you state is on the players you think he teaches them to soft ??? Our front court gets out rebounded because our guards don’t box out and look at the ball bounce off the rim. Again you are barking up the wrong tree and I don’t think I will convince you otherwise. Grant is massively respected by coaches around the country but that doesn’t matter because you don’t think he was a good player at SHU.

He could bring in recruits from outer space for all I care as long as they fit his system. I just don’t have a clue what his system is. I don’t think he does either.

I am just describing what I see...replicas of him as a player. Guys glued to the floor who despite their size struggle to get their shot off. The guards boxing is obviously an issue but why is Mamu watching guys make easy layups after an Ike block? I KNOW Samuel can get up and jam yet why is he getting offensive rebounds and not throwing them down. Instead flipping weak put back attempts up at the rim? I just see him teaching all he knows.. being over matched and trying to compensate.

I think SHU is an attractive job now. Solid pay, new practice gym on the way, low expectations

Low expectations but everyone wants Willard fired a guy who took us to 5 straight tournament appearances??? Ok got it.

If you’re moving on from Willard than the expectations are not low, and you’d probably have to commit to someone long term right off the bat. No one worth their salt is taking a job knowing they could be fired after five straight tournament appearances.

I don’t think he should be fired. Can’t say I’d be upset if he decided to move onto another school though.

This is my first post on this board in a long time, because of posters like the ones on this post.

This post is an embarrassment to a board I loved for 24 years. You hate KW no matter what, that's your prerogative but you make the board unreadable.

I'll see you guys when this board cleans up their acts.
