Jerry on the game

4. Kadary Richmond did his thing

The Hall’s standout guard was head-and-shoulders above everyone on the court. Beyond his stat line, his passing was off-the-charts good. Richmond could have logged 15 assists if his teammates shot the ball better. He also doled out several “hockey” assists – passes that led to an assist.

The senior’s shot selection was excellent, he boxed out on the defensive glass and was in total command when he was on the court.

The best game I ever saw him play. Even better than the UConn game, although I understand the difference in talent.

Jerry is spot on. The stat line is ridiculous. But if a couple of players finished his passes and or if hockey assists counted (LOL) he could have had at least 15 dimes.

He was a man playing against boys all day long.

Well, I think we realize the other BE teams are going to throw the kitchen sink at KR.

What you want to hear from your team leaders:

“We could have been much better, but that goes back to working harder in practice and being accountable for what we’re doing," Richmond said.

"We can’t be satisfied with this," Davis added.

I also liked this from Grant:

“There two versions of Kadary – Seton Hall got the good version, and I got the bad version," Billmeier joked. "If he decides he wants to take over a game, he takes over a game.”

Billmeier also threw in some unsolicited praise for Richmond's character.

“Besides being a phenomenal player, he’s a phenomenal kid," he said. "My (5-year-old) daughter still asks for Kooks all the time. He comes off a little bit quiet, but he is one of the nicest, most respectful kids I’ve been around.”

So many of us took his court demeanor in the wrong way. I am starting to get to know Kooks better. And Grant is spot on. He is absolutely a great young man.

So hope next season at this time he's playing in the NBA. The ability is there. And now the drive seems to be as well.

Question for you and others who are closer to the program on this, and have been speaking of Richmond of now being at a level that honestly seems above Myles Powell or Whitehead, our two best guards in the last decade: the Big East coaches are obviously locked into each program's players, developments, ins-and-outs, etc, just as much as anyone. With all the praise surrounding how KR looks right now, why do you think he wasn't selected by the coaches to any preseason all league team? It can't be anti-Hall bias, because Richmond was voted on the preseason team last year. Only Kalk was unanimous, so it isn't like these guys are simply checking boxes. Do you think it is just based on the track record to date and fact he was voted all league last year preseason but didn't finish the season as such?

Preseason teams are just that, and there are "hits" and "misses" all the time to varying degrees. So it doesn't matter. But just curious from the perspective of folks in the know.

Did NJIT come to play and Seton hall take them too lightly?
Who knows -- I wasn't there. But with all these preseason scrimmages/exhibits in which guys skip games, coaches tinker with stuff, etc, it is hard to read into any particular result.

There is that famous example of Syracuse losing to LeMoyne in a preseason exhibition/scrimmage, and then going on to win the Big East title and having a ridiculous season in a loaded Big East.

I get that, but I’m sure they haven’t seen Clingan either since he was a backup playing last March. So he is being projected to make the leap. And isn’t like Richmond is a secret. Everyone knows he is our best player. He was going into last year as well and picked to make all league.

Richmond has seldom tapped into his enormous potential. We have seen bits and pieces but unlike Powell, Whitehead, Carrington, Delgado and the like there's little consistency.

That now seems to have changed. I have watched him play twice, once in practice and this past Saturday. I have seldom seen an SHU player do what he has done in those two viewings.

Everyone is right to proceed with caution. But I no longer believe the 'old Kooks' will rear his ugly head. Short of injury Sha isn't blowing smoke when he says Richmond has the ability to be a first round NBA draft choice next season.

He is indeed that talented.

The ball is squarely in his court.

not a fan of this quote in year 2 with free agency in full gear.

"I don’t want to play a small-ball lineup like that, not in our league, no way," Holloway said. "But sometimes you gotta adjust to what you got, right?

i undrstand Tubek (non top 75 HS kids shouldn’t be counted on as a savior anyway) is injured and the centers had foul trouble but damn. Davis playing center or even PF all season would be a disaster.

I healthy Richmond, could be all big east this year for sure as long as we remain relevant (near bubble or above)

Kadary prob has the potential. But puttimg it together is another issue. Lets see whatva slimmed down kadary can do. One thing he has the advantage in is his size.in the post. Why shaheen disnt go to that more after what we saw against uconn is beyond me

He was preseason 2nd team last yr wasnt he? And he didnt earn that over the season. So why vote for a kid's potential?

Now maybe he is playing to that potential and got himself prepared like never before. KR has always made plays that are amazing but usually didnt play amazing games. Maybe that has changed.

I may be crazy, but I see a player with All America potential. Whether he is a better college played that IW or MP who knows, but his physical skills will make him more desireable as a pro if he plays to my expecations

And don’t forget how important his supporting cast is. And his doesn’t come close to what Whitehead and Powell had.

As the article said…could easily have had 15 assists…. But didn’t. Someone has to convert those pretty passes

Jerry's point, and it was well taken, is that some of those passes led to baskets but were more in line with hockey assists.

The pass leading to the pass for the assist.
