Kadary Richmond, former Seton Hall guard, joins Washington Wizards as a free agent

25 years ago Kaday would have been drafted. The game has changed.

The average NBA team had 13.7 three point attempts per game in 2000, that number is now 37.6 per game in the 2025 season. Celtics averaged more than 48 attempts per game. It's unlikely a guard can survive in today's NBA without a three point shot.

25 years ago Kadary would’ve been an undersized Power Forward and on nobodies radar

And the change is not for the better

I mean this with no disrespect. While 25 years ago was a weaker draft. Kenyon Martin was deserving of #1 pick. Aggressive 4/5 paint menace and keeping you honest with a jump shot. It is bad form to compare a generation ago and different style. Kadary was a 5th year guy with great length and reach for position he plays who still can't shoot yet

Good luck to Kadary. Hope he banked some of the Vitamin Water $. Pitino’s pitch included come with me and with ur talent you’ll get drafted.

well Dan the ones who take a pay cut usually dont last in the NBA , the ones who last are the top guys

As someone who grew up just outside of Washington D.C., I can honestly say the only good thing the Wizards have going for them is the big-mouthed, incredible waste of God-given talent known as gilbert arenas is long gone. Talk about someone who had all the talent in the world, had the opportunity to be an all-time great, and wasted it away. Someone who now desperately tries to remain relevant by giving awful Hot Takes on his podcast.

Good luck to Kadary, going to an organization that has no idea what it’s doing.

Even crazier when you think an NBA season is 82 games vs college 31 (68% longer season not including preseason or playoffs).
Add SOBO1:free room and board , food medical although at SHU free medical for an athlete may not be be a benefit and if you want a free college degree which might come in handy when you flame out in a few years

Play college ball and then take a major cut in pay to play in the NBA.

Something's wrong with this scenario!
As a simple statement there is. However it's really an apples to oranges comparison. The only equivalent variable is that's it's basketball.

Kadary's a top 50 college player (arguably top 25-30) out of about 5,000 players. In the NBA he'll be among the bottom 50 of 500 players. A top 50 NBA player will make 15 to 20 times what KR made at SJU last year. A bottom 50 NBA player makes half the league minimum (and that presumes he's rostered long enough to have his contract guaranteed).

Kadary was only a top 50 player in the BE. You must be kidding to think he was a top 50 in the country. You don't watch enough games of other teams in other conferences. There are 50 kids in HS that were given ships this year who are better.

Let me put it to you another way if all 5,000 players were available for the NBA and willing to go KR would not even get a look.

I just think you are way overly optimistic about his skills, He is a decent player but no way is he better than kids that came out of SHU and went to Europe in my opinion. KR is more like Myles Cale. Best bet is Europe.

I’ll wish Kadary good luck but certainly couldn’t care less whether his NBA career pans out or not. Even if it does, it will in no way benefit SHU. Pitino and St. John’s will be the ones who get the credit.

I just don’t get your takes. He was first team all BE in a season the league won the NCAAT and had two other teams on the S16. Last year 2nd team all BE while playing the later part of the season injured. But go ahead just make wildly generalized statements while never providing a concrete fact.

A guard who in his senior season stunk at free throw shooting and 3 point shooting. That says it all. If he was such a great player as some of you think why was he not selected in the first or second round of the NBA draft. Hype and reality are 2 different things.

Look he does some really good things but he has some big flaws in his game.

Talking apples and oranges. KR was an outstanding college player. End of discussion. It may turn out that he doesn’t stick in the NBA. Very few college guys do every year. In this years draft only 36 of the 59 picks in the two rounds were college players, the other 23 were foreign players. There are a lot of great college players who don’t get drafted or stick. But KR did get a two way contract so he could be suiting up in as many as 41 NBA games. That most likely won’t happen but he will have his opportunities.

It says something but hardly all.

Kadary was eighth in the league in rebounding and the highest ranked guard at more than six per game.

He was third in FG % at nearly 49% behind two big men -- Ryan Kalkbrenner and Zach Fremantle.

He was fourth in assists, second in assists to turnover ratio, third in steals and 10th in blocked shots.

That's a damn versatile player. A skill set highly valued in the college game.

You make good points.

Highly valued in the college game but not all the skills for a point guard . Point guards should also be good free throw shooters and 3 point shooters.. He also played on a very good team in a not so good league.

If he was so great he would be drafted. Scouts see the issues and limitations to play at the next level. So do I.

Explain to us why he did not get drafted since you think he is so great. What are the issues that prevented him from being a first round or second round pick?

Look at the guards that were picked and tell us what made them better than KR. Why did Harper get picked over KR. Harper was 1 and done. How about Edgecombe another guard picked 3rd? Guards with talent were in demand and yet KR was NOT picked.

You’re changing the goal posts. We’re talking about guards in their college career. Will see how everyone does in the NBA when they get there and play a few years.

I'm just asking what the pro scouts saw in a number of guards that played college ball in the US and were picked ahead of KR. Something in KR's game they did not like as much.

Sure a number of round 1 and 2 picks will flame out. And some undrafted will surprise. But by and larger the talent evaluators know what they are doing.

I think what you aren't grasping is that evaluating how good a player is in college is sometimes different than how good said player might be in the NBA. Kadary didn't get drafted because his lack of shooting ability in the modern NBA and the things he does really well will be harder for him to do against NBA players, to the extent he can get away with some of them at all (like the bully ball, inside the paint game, where he was so effective in college during the latter part of his career, but which would be much harder to do against NBA size and athletes).

Tim Tebow is an all time college football player at the QB position. We saw how that didn't translate into the NFL. There are examples of this across multiple sports.

I don't believe I have to explain this to a supposedly keen observer of the game but I'll bite. The NBA and college basketball -- much like the NFL and college football -- are different games and value different skills.

Kadary's shooting issues are well reported. Shooting from distance is an almost must have skill in the NBA. But that's not the only issue.

Kadary is 23 and will be 24 when the 2025-26 season starts. Age is a huge factor in the NBA evaluation of talent. Go look at the draft again and see how many players older than 20 were selected.

While you're at it, tell me where Hunter Dickinson, one of the top players in college basketball for the last four years was drafted. A third-team All-American (top 15 player) in 2024-25.

His back better hold up! Great kid, excellent player, can't shoot from outside with reliability, but I'm rooting for him. He gave us many great moments. Wish we could have kept him and Dre. We were pre-season top 25 assuming they stayed. I remember the pre-season predictions.

Centers in the NBA have to be agile, quick and do more than dunk. Hunter does not have all the skills wanted in an NBA big. Well not completely true. He has some of the skills. The style of play in the NBA is not compatible with his. That was his problem. Plus there are a lot of 7 footers these days to choose from.
