Has anyone tried - or know anyone that has tried - to learn Irish?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I haven't looked at that yet. I've heard different things about Rosetta Stone.

I may try one of the free sites to gain a a basic understanding then see about Rosetta Stone or something similar.

Padraig: PIPE (Pirates of Irish Persuasion and Extraction) is a very robust alumni club that SHU started in the past few years. They have an annual mass in Gaelic, and one of the members teaches the language, I believe at NYU or Fordham. He went through a brief lesson over dinner at one of the meetings, and would be a great resource. Check out their events on the alumni page, they are doing some great things.

Thank you, man!

Great question. I grew up hearing it sung. If I weren't so insanely busy I would be learning. A friend of my family had great results with Rosetta Stone.

Started using a free online tool. Duolingo. If I can get through it all I will probably pay up for Rosetta Stone.

Also got in contact with Alumni Relations about the PIPE organization but haven't heard anything back since mid March.

Grew up with songs as well. Love hearing it sung.

I remember reading an article on the Irish language years ago by a linguist. He said typical Irish speakers have a 50,000 word vocabulary, dwarfing the norm for English speakers, which is typically 2000 or 3000 words, if i remember correctly.

Email Brian O'Malley. There was an event in March, a lecture on the emigration of Irish to NY and NJ, by Dermot Quinn. The next event is, I think, 4/25 -- a one man play by professor emeritus, 'Doc' McGlone. Gaelic Mass is set for May 5. There is a facebook page -- Brian will help guide you.
