Transportation Secretary Pete said yesterday drivers will not have to worry about gas prices if they buy electric vehicles.Average electric car price around 55k vs. 25k for a compact vehicle. Also Pete May be unaware that AAA stated that annual cost of operating an electric car will be $600 more than a gas driven car.BBB basket of goodies includes a 12k subsidy for buying electric vehicle for some ,but still a shortfall compared to gas driven car.The former mayor of the hamlet of South Bend should spend some time reading more on transportation to help address the current impression that he is a total lightweight on transportation and now

He’s not wrong.
I have two EV’s. I do not think about the price of gas at all.

They are both leases which were cheaper per month than their combustion engine counterparts because of the incentives at the time.

It is absolutely cheaper to run / maintain an EV.

Assuming you get 25 mpg, it’s about 3-4x cheaper to fuel with electricity when you charge at home plus no oil changes / air filters etc.

Seems the cargo port backlog easing up and infrastructure spending is really worrying folks about his political future and are looking for something else to complain about.

why is it $600 more? i know the upfront cost is alot , but the electric utility is much cheaper than gas... and one thing youre missing

no engine maintanence. a lot less repairs

I had it at about $1,700 versus $350 for 12,000 mi.

Beyond air and oil filters the entire approach is much simpler. There's no transmission, no transmission fluids, no cooling fluids, no exhaust system, minimal drive train, no ignition or timing issues.

Change can be hard. We used to have steam locomotives.

All that being said, Mayor Pete's comment was tone deaf. People are hurting now and it will be years before electric vehicles are the norm.

Here is another effect of electric vehicles. The more people go electric, the price of gas will decrease due to less demand.

I looked it up. It’s depreciation after 5 years with 75k miles on the car. I suppose that’s a factor if you plan to buy a new car and then sell after 5 years. New EVs keep getting cheaper each year and then there are federal and state incentives to buy a new one, so they don’t hold their value as well.

The operating costs of the cars were 15-18 cents per mile for gas cars and 11 cents per mile for EVs per AAA.

fwiw, I don't think it was tone deaf.

He wasn't saying stop complaining about gas prices. He was talking specifically about what is in the Build back better bill. Saying that if we pass the bill, people who see price as a barrier to getting an EV would be able to take advantage of lower fuel costs and not having to worry about the price of gas.

if they dont hold their value then why would it make sense to sell?

atm used EVs are more expensive than new, because of scarcity.

The government should not subsidize any industry. Let the free market work.

Yeah, it seems silly to include a 5 year exit price on a car.

Full disclosure though - I am about to run a new electric line to charge a little faster. I have been charging with a regular outlet for almost all of my charging the last 2 years but now with 2 cars I need to charge a bit faster. The cost of that all in to do it myself will be about $500.

Funny story though. I found the car I wanted and saw that a dealer just got two of them in. Called and made the deal work for me and drove up that night. The salesman ended up asking me a ton of questions about what it was like to actually own an EV. Called me a couple days later with more questions because I ended up selling him on the idea and he bought the other one. ha

Agree...Not a fan of money in the infrastructure plan being directed to build recharging stations. Why? Musk was building those on his own and you can charge at home. Most EV owners I know, hardly ever charge outside the house.

youd think amazon would be behind funding charging stations for its distribution network.

Debatable, but the free market is a myth here. Everything is already subsidized somewhere to an extent whether it is manufacturing subsidies to operate in a given state or federal oil and gas subsidies etc.

Hmm, those farmers would all die if there weren’t subsidies. Then there is oil and a myriad of industries that are helped with government backing. But I never hear right wingers complain about them. Personally, I believe that government plays a role in helping and bolstering industries for the good of the country.

Exactly!

The Government is too involved in the economy. Other subsidies should not be used to justify EV subsidies.

I don't consider a free market concept to be a myth. Not sure where you get that from.

Yes, to a point. I think it has gone too far.

The issue is that yo have people with limited business and engineering background making decisions based on feelings and agendas. There is also the friction my corruption, be it overt or subtle. There is just too much money in the hands of the government control.

Can anyone say the have confidence in the House, Senate, and the dynamic duo in the White house to manage a $6.8T business? I don't.

Because our economy is a free market intertwined with government objectives.

Like subsidizing oil and gas so we have cheap fuel costs and people can spend their money on other goods. Or building bridges and highways to make cars so people Now they want to target ways to encourage more people to drive EVs to reduce emissions.

To meet that objective, they can reduce oil and gas subsidies and let that “free market” decide which cars to buy but that will hurt the economy. They can tax oil and gas more which will also hurt the economy or they can subsidize the cost of EVs which will encourage growth in a new industry and create jobs to meet the demand of new infrastructure.

I’m not sure you’re listening. But I think it depends what you mean by right wingers

Why are we even spending tax dollars on expanding the use of personal vehicles? If we really cared about the environment we should be investing more money in rail and mass transit. Would take a lot of personal and commercial vehicles off the road, save the cost and environmental impact of producing them and waste.

lol invest in rail? who do you think we are, every other nation 30 years ago??

You’re an expert on the matter?
im not an expert on anything. novice at life. just enjoying the ride.

have a buddy whose in a good spot at amtrak. they own all the lines basically and theres no plans for upgrading. why wouldnt we have already done so? cant use slave labor to lay the tracks anymore.

our rail transportation is painfully slow. and expensive for the consumer between major cities

I recall reading WSJ articles in the past few years demonstrating that many of the subsidies that have gone to green energy have been wasteful, a drain on tax payers and in some cases an outright bust. I’m all for making the environment cleaner for my kids and reducing our dependency on foreign oil, but I also don’t often trust how these subsidies are decided or applied, or the government officials that make those calls.

Why not both? People are still going to be driving.
Invest in mass and personal transit.

Both are in the bbb bill.

I’d also add that many innovations or inventions that were the norm today became so because consumers or individuals were offered a better choice/product. A big reason solar, electric or wind hasn’t become that yet in a big way has to do with the product/technology (and I think we’ve made some big strides there). And long term nuclear probably needs to be part of that discussion if we are being intellectually honest from what we know at this point.

basically all inventions and innovations, or my term: innoventions, are created by the millitary.

millitary and that infinite budget is what drives most innoventions.

Id be happy to read any you have. I’ve personally found most criticisms to be very one sided and don’t include how much we have given to oil and gas companies and their real impact on the environment and our health.

Absolutely. Nuclear should be a major part of our future.

Because there is not an endless supply of money and shouldn’t we be focusing on the solutions that are best for the environment?
