Quite frankly, I'm tired of dirt-digging nazis and their mob mentality. Everyone does stupid things. However, it's great to see you Dems - who claim to be the party of non-prejudice - eat each other alive. AOC and Clinton want him out.

What say you?

Northam's admission and then he took it back and said his explanation that he doesn't believe that he is the person in the black face or the KKK outfit kills him. What do you mean you do not think? Either you know or you don't.

When he initially came out and admitted it quickly, I thought he had a chance to survive if he was contrite and saying what a dumb thing it was to do as a young man dressing up for Halloween. But, he sure did blow that opportunity and he made it worse for himself. He is now a liar and then spoke about the Michael Jackson dance contest. Just so poorly handled that he can't survive.

I am not one of these guys that says oh one mistake in your youth and it is over. But you do have to own up to the mistake. Northam has not and that is why he should resign.

This guy is even dumber than I thought... Virginia got what they deserved in him and his asst Governor - what a mess.

You do realize that this “magazine” is a goof and not real? Not really sure why SPK needs to post this. He makes enough dumb statements without having lies being said.

Didn't realize - duh. They still have a mess on their hands with the guy who should step down and the accusations on the assistant Governor.

Because it's a funny joke which is what he is as well as just about 95% of the politicians/leaders. You yourself have often defended comedy on these very boards, why the hardon here?

Due to the fact that many people will think of that as the truth.

Ironic to see Virginia Governor fighting to survive full term.

(rim shot)

Interesting that if this bozo Gov resigns, the next 2 in line are facing trouble as well. The Lt. Gov is facing sexual harassment accusations, and the Attorney General was photographed in black face in the 80s as well. Unreal.

With all these guys in Virginia politicians dressing in black face, they should just use the Soul Man defense. We saw it in a movie, no one complained or said it was offensive back then in the 80's.

For those young people, Soul Man was about a guy, C Thomas Howell, who took tanning pills to darken his skin to be black. This was an effort to pass as black so he could be accepted into Harvard Law School. This is clearly a movie that could not be made today. Although I do remember it having some funny scenes.

Are you a member of the bar in Virginia? There might be a demand for your counsel.

We were pretty close to the governor showing off his moonwalk so the "soul man" defense is a distinct possibility.

Lol."Soul man defense" I love it.
That movie was so bad... but funny bad. I probably watched it 10 times when I was younger.

The re-make is going to be about Elizabeth Warren's quest to be accepted into Harvard Law as a psuedo-Native American.

Dem leaders now going silent on him stepping down since fourth in line is a Republican. Politics...gotta love it. Play high and mighty until it compromises your ideology.

While I am sure there is some truth to that, I don't think anyone has reversed their opinion on Northam. "Going silent" isn't really accurate. That is just how a news cycle works. They all got on record with their opinions and then we moved on.

I'm not really sure what the answer is... There does seem to be a difference between Northam and Herring. Does that matter? Does it make a difference if it's a 25 year old in 1986 in a super racist blackface costume vs a 19 year old dressing up as a rapper? Politically, it may not matter... but outside of politics I think we should all be able to agree that there is a difference between those two instances.

My opinion is Northam should resign, and Herring should remain in office.
Fairfax should be investigated, and removed if the allegation is found to be credible.

I am not sure how we can reconcile giving a lifetime appointment to someone with a similar allegation to the supreme court and then expect that precedent not to be applied to elected officials though.

Agreed with it all up until the last paragraph. The only similarity between this situation and Kavanaugh is they both happened a long time ago. There is a picture of Northam in black face, no? I don't recall evidence being produced that suggest that the Kavanaugh allegation(s) ever happened.

To be clear, I am comparing the situation for Kavenaugh to Fairfax.
Northam, Fairfax and Herring would all have to leave office for the GOP to gain control which was the premise of 85's post.

I do think Northam should step down but I don't think Herring should.

The situations for Kavenaugh and Fairfax are similar in that there are two allegations of sexual misconduct, both of which may have compelling testimony from their accusers but no direct evidence.

Fair. Thank you for clarifying, and agree.

Has anyone here ever done the black face thing? It seems ridiculous. Is this something that was done at parties or watching Soul Man?

Thankfully no, but I did dress up as a Mexican gangster for Halloween one year when I was 14 or 15.
We didn't actually do anything other than button the top button on our flannel shirts and ask people for candy... but still, not a great look.

Fun fact - I distinctly remember trick or treating that day at my future wife's house and her father asking what we were dressed as and then making fun of us for the dumb costumes and said we were too old to be trick or treating. I wouldn't meet my wife for another 7 years or so as I went to Columbia high school and she went to St. Elizabeth's. When I told him that story, he said "yeah, that sounds like me" lol.

I think the issue is what the individual dressed as in blackface. Dressing up as a lawn jockey, in blackface with a klansman, vs dressing up as Obama is a different issue. Northam’s backtracking IMO is worse than what he did.

Never did the black face thing. It is entirely inappropriate and was when I grew up in the 70's and 80's.

Once I dressed up like a box of Extra Strength Tylenol when J&J had a scandal (it was laced with poison and a few people died I think) as a joke for a Halloween party when I was in college. My father was mad at me (he worked in the Pharma industry) and said he did not think I should go out like that and said if someone punches me in the nose I will deserve it - lol.

I am far from PC, and was less so in the 1980's, but I would have never done black face. I guess for Virginia yahoos, I guess it was SOP.

Context does matter. Is there an acceptable list of black people who I could dress up as in blackface?

Never did blackface but it was not the no no it is now a days. I also think there is a big difference of donning black face and doing an Amos and Andy routine than dressing up on Halloween as a black celebrity. I agree with Hall85 on this matter. I do not think it is so simple.

In terms of movies, Soul Man is not the only movie. What about SilverStreak with Gene Wilder? Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder. What about White Chicks with Wayan brothers or even Eddie Murphy in coming to America playing an elderly white Jewish man. Dave Chappell plays white characters Is it bad for white actors to play black but is it ok for black actors to put on white face to play white?

If a black guy put on white makeup to look like Donald Trump for Halloween, would anyone be offended? I don't think so.

However, the context of the Governor of Virginia having Blackface on when appearing next to a guy in the KKK and the fact that he admitted and then backed off is what kills him.

Second woman stepped forward accusing Fairfax of rape including documentation to friends when it happened. Former governor is calling for his resignation...this is precious.

Are you taking the same stance with Fairfax as you did with Kavenaugh? A political hit job because of the timing?
