NY Mets host the Deaf awareness day (July 30, 2023)​

NY Mets Provided American Sign Language PIP (Picture in Picture) on the Citi Field video scoreboard during the public address announcement​

As you may know, live closed captions on scoreboards and also American Sign Language (ASL) signers in the national anthem become norms in sports stadium and arenas, but how about the ASL signers communicated the Public Address Announcer (PA) message delivered which were part of all game details, penalties, activities, in game contests, details and more when sports teams (pro, college) host the Deaf awareness or American Sign Language (ASL) event?

Yes, New York Islanders host the Deaf awareness night in February 23, 2023 also, New York Mets host the Deaf Awareness Day in July 30, 2023.

Thanks to New York Islanders Booster Club for their support as well.

NJ Devils hockey (Prudential Center, Newark NJ) host the ASL Night in March 12, 2023, yes in game contests, activities, national anthem but not PA. (Source: NJ DevilsBurning Issue, April 2023, Volume 41, Number 8, page 7.

Bravo to Olive Osmond Hearing Foundation of New York and Hearing Loss America of New York Chapter of New York York as they successfully campaigned and spread words, and host successful NY Mets and New York Islanders Deaf awareness event.

Thanks to Deaf NYC News, Deaf National News and Long Island ASL and Deaf events got their words out.

Bravo to NY Mets org for the fantastic and awesome event and ASL communication technology and live captioning. Thanks for great NY Mets game experience.

Bravo to Sign Nexus, interpreting service - NYC for well done job at Citi Field.

ASL signers (Sign Nexus ASL interpreting service ) communicated the message the Public Address Announcer (PA) delivered which were part of all game penalties, activities, in game contests, details
Mill Neck ASL family interpreting service did it for NY Islanders Deaf Awareness Night.

Thanks to few Mets Deaf employees who are still working, dedicate to their hard working and service to Mets org and fans.

Thanks to NY Islanders and UBS arena for their ASL communication technology guidance to NY Mets org.

Bravo to Coralia Anazagasti, Deaf person who performed national anthem in American Sign Language at the Citi Field. She is ASL talented.

Gary Noll who was born deaf and grew up in a deaf household, received a 2019 New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Award for Public Service and 2017 New Jersey Association of the Deaf unsung hero award for his advocacy on behalf of sports accessibility, awareness, diversity and inclusion in metropolitan. Noll also advocate and provide guidance on American Sign Language (ASL) during the national anthem, group performances, public announcements and other hosting duties on video score board Noll also raised ASL and Deaf awareness event in NJ and metropolitan sports arena and stadium.

Gary spoke to Bryan Felt about the above issue and was told.....

We are working to have an ASL signer for the anthem at select games and specifically the game vs. RU.

Live closed captions on scoreboards and American Sign Language (ASL) signers during the national anthem have become the norm in sports arenas.

But, how about the ASL signers for the Public Address Announcer (PA) who deliver game details, penalties, activities, in-game contests, and more when pro and college sports teams host the Deaf Awareness or American Sign Language (ASL) events?

Several sports teams and arenas are hosting nights specifically catering to deaf and hard-of-hearing fans and ASL signers who deliver public address announcements, which can be seen Picture in Picture on the video scoreboard and screen making the experience inclusive.

Following is a list of venues that offer Deaf Awareness Nights, ASL signers and Mobile captioning QR coded messages.

The New York Islanders hosted Deaf Awareness Night on Feb. 23, 2023, and plan to host it again next year and the New York Mets hosted Deaf Awareness Day on July 30, 2023. The NJ Devils hosted ASL Night on March 12, 2023, at the Prudential Center in Newark. Additionally, there was an ASL signer present for game contests, activities and the national anthem but not the public address announcer.

The New Jersey Devils will host ASL night next year on March 7, 2024. The Barclay Center in Brooklyn will have a Deaf Awareness event this fall/winter, and the New York Liberty will host a Deaf Awareness event at a date to be announced in 2024.

New York’s Madison Square Garden will host the New York Knick’s Deaf Awareness or “All Abilities” night on a date to be announced. NY Islanders hockey will host Deaf Awareness Night again (date TBA) and the New Jersey Devils will host ASL night on March 7, 2024.

All New York Sports teams’ Deaf Awareness events are sponsored by the Olive Osmond Hearing Foundation of NY Chapter and the Hearing Loss America of the NY chapter during the 2023-2024 sports team seasons. The New York Liberty, pro women’s basketball will also host Deaf Awareness Day next year.

The Office of Rutgers athletics and marketing department plan to have ASL signers in the national anthem as part of Rutgers community day during Rutgers football game vs. Virginia Tech on Sept. 16, 2023. Expect the same for Rutgers women’s softball and basketball next season. Note, Rutgers’ SHI stadium has already added additional live captioning on scoreboards during football games this year.

Seton Hall is working on having ASL signers in the national anthem at select games and at Rutgers vs Seton Hall men’s basketball game at Prudential Center on Dec. 9, 2023.

The Office of the Big East conference, NCAA plan to have ASL signers in the national anthem during the Big East men’s and women’s basketball tournament next year, March 2024.

The New York Yankees baseball may host a Deaf Awareness event at Yankees stadium in 2024, but there was an internal discussion with a lot of interest and potential. We’ll keep an eye on it.

Mobile captioning QR-coded messages on the giant-hung video scoreboard are available at the following venues.

The Prudential Center in Newark for the New Jersey Devils. Madison Square Garden in New York City for the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. The UBS arena in Belmont for the NY Islanders. The US Open tennis tournament in Queens in the Grand Stand stadium only and the Barclay Center in Brooklyn for the Brooklyn Nets.
