This is just crazy stuff
Who cares what the NYT thinks. It is now a half step above the Daily Rag..I mean Daily News

In the end, It may not buy them a championship but it will buy them Jamir Watkins, Ian Jackson, and one other star in about a months time to replace Richmond, Scott and possibly Luis. But there is a better than 50% chance Luis returns and plays himself into a lottery (top 10 pick) in a weak 2026 draft class while cashing in a big NIL check.

Braintrust at work yesterday after Butler game finalizing tonight’s game plan 😉and future NIL disbursements

And the funniest thing is listening to UCONN fans complaining about Repole and his NIL contributions.

That coming from a school that had Jimbo & Co. paying every 5 star recruit in 1990s and early 2000s boatloads of cash under the table to go play in Cow Town USA and one of the most boring places in the Northeast, if not the whole country.

My gut tells me that somehow even with few rules Pitino will find a way to bring scandal to Queens. This is the guy whose staff provides hookers for his players. Of course he had all the plausible deniability that comes with being slick.

Georgia's SB71 and Alabama's HB240 straightforwardly call for compensation earned by college athletes to not be subject to state income taxes. Georgia imposes a flat 5.39% income tax rate while Alabama's income tax ranges from 2% to 5%, with income over $3,000 ($6,000 for married couples) facing the highest rate.Feb 16, 2025

...not to mention two Final Fours and a Natty vacated in "Horse Town, USA"

Well you can sure as hell bet NJ won't go along with this. NJ & taxes, perfect together.

Great article, though. Thoughts:
1. NYT never averse to taking a shot at the Catholic Church
2. Repole does not lack for hubris. "St. Mike's"? Stop. And he truly does think he's on the coaching staff, I'm sure Rick loves that. But he's bought and paid for.
3. Who the hell would want to dine with those two cafones? Repole probably tucks his napkin into his shirt. Would recommend taking caution if it's a small Italian place with a back room

Often richly deserved

Unpopular opinion: St. John’s success has as much to do with Pitino’s coaching as Repole’s money, if not more. It’s not like they’re winning by pure talent alone. They are out-hustling, out-muscling, and out-defending their opponents. It takes great coaching to get that type of buy-in for an entire season.

That shouldn't be unpopular or uncontroversial. It should be easiest point to agree on in the history of this board.

Lots of revisionist history going on right now. No one thought or thinks they have the "best roster money can buy" or anything like that. That's why I don't buy all the NIL stuff coming out of the woodwork now. Go look at the preseason posts and projections. Folks had them maybe as a back end top 25 team with a roster picked 5th preseason in the league. A "probable" NCAA team. Nothing like this.

The whole is better than the individual parts and Pitino has done an unbelievable job.

I don't think anyone would argue that. Nova and Gtown spent pretty hefty sums of money this year and got almost nothing to show for it. The hope at SHU is that when we have a competitive amount of money to work with, we've got the right coach in place.

Some probably would, however insane. Recall the "Richmond Portal" thread over the summer. The "takes" about Pitino are some of the wildest things posted in the 10+ years I've been on our boards.

What's interesting about Georgetown is that when they got off to a good start in the Big East schedule, posts started popping up on our boards about the "specifics" of the NIL $ Cooley had at this his disposal and deployed for his roster this year. When they came back to the pack and started losing more, you didn't see as much of that.

He has three high level players who are all products of the NIL rules. And the other PG is real good too, also an NIL era transfer. And he has and always has been a great coach. He was less god last year though.

Yes, except 2 of the 3 "high level" players were not voted to all Big East 1st, 2nd or 3rd team before the season began. No one was predicting their breakout for various reasons on that type of level. It is why one of them was voted Most Improved Player in the league.

The other PG -- Smith -- was expected to do big things and has been hurt and compromised most of the season.

I don't know what "products of the NIL rules" means. Every player is a product of the NIL rules now.

No one is saying he's a "god". Pretend his name is Tom Izzo and he's doing this for Creighton, the reaction would be much different. He did a good job year 1, and did in year 2 what he's done his whole career at numerous stops. It really shouldn't be controversial.

I get why folks start this narrative though. They have massively overachieved, but the easy thing is to attribute that solely to $ instead of other stuff.

Why are people ripping Reople? At least St John's has a billionaire that actually cares about the program. Seton Hall's billionaire and half a billionaire who was a former Major League Baseball player just won't do a thing for the program. I am sure the basketball court would be renamed Crowdstrike Court and the baseball field would be changed to Vaughn's Field if one or both would step up.

Heard guys like Mo and Craig were really upset with the school the way they handled the release of Shep. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I would expect baseball players to donate to the baseball program. So I wouldn't expect them to help basketball over baseball anyway.

Why are they obligated in your mind to do anything? Maybe they just don't have an interest in basketball. Crowdstrike Court, like Kurtz would care about that. LOL!! Think his firm does just fine without having to cheekily slap its name on a court.

Love that this is getting the attention it deserves from a top-flight newspaper. Google Pat Forde and SI, he worked at Louisville-Courier Journal during the dark times for Slick. Some of the best sports journalism covering that time. Our own Bob Ley covered this extensively for ESPN. Father Shanley at St. John's? 🙈🙈
