Another one of those Seton Hall games where you say to yourself what if.

What if…
  • They had Dylan Adae-Wusu
  • Coleman didn’t have an off night
  • They didn’t have to dig themselves out of another double digit hole
There were moments where you were inclined to shut it off out of frustration and then they tease you up until the final few possessions. Bottomline another opportunity against a team expected to finish in the bottom tier of the conference has passed the Pirates by.

Blue Tinted Glasses
  • Some players take longer to live up to their HS ranks than others. Scotty Middleton appears to be a player that might end up being a hit instead of a miss. Was perfect from the floor (4/4 all from 3) in route to 14 points. Need to find a way to get him more consistent shots. At least in the range of 8-10 a game. Also need to prioritize him as a player you hope to retain going forward.
  • The frosh continue to show promise. Felton chipped in with 6 points and had 3 assists, which surpasses his total season output (2) prior to the game. While Gus Yalden might not fill up the box score, it’s becoming abundantly clear that his impact on the game is measured in other ways. His energy is infectious, his ball screening is the best of our bigs, and he doesn’t give ground in the post.
  • Jenkins backed up his 17 against Providence with another 21 last night. The Pirates need options to put the ball in the basket and it appears Chauncey has rediscovered his early season confidence.
  • Aligbe, with another efficient 12 points on 5/7 from the floor. His foul trouble last night went a little under the radar. It’s his 3rd straight game in double figures, but was only able to stay on the floor for 15 minutes in this one.
Sour Grapes and Gripes
  • Talk about the wrong time for Coleman to have an off night. He is still only a sophomore, it was a road game, these things are going to happen. But it was apparent that Butler made it a priority to take the ball out of Coleman’s hands. I believe he went almost midway into the first half without attempting a FG. He and Sha are going to have to find ways to prepare and overcome this as other teams are going to look to neutralize Isaiah.
  • End game execution / coaching. Sha takes a hit here. Coleman was on the bench as the Pirates rallied. He inserted Coleman for Felton who had just hit a crucial 3. The results did not go in Sha’s favor. Coleman was a non factor on the potential game tying possession and then was part of the pick and roll breakdown that surrendered the bucket that put the Pirates back down 4.
  • Back to the aforementioned potential game typing possession. I understand why Jenkins has the ball and ultimately takes the shot. He was your best player offensively. But why not put Middleton or Coleman in the pick and roll action instead of Gus. Gus is not a threat to score there, allowing Screen to play drop coverage and force Jenkins to take a more difficult pull up jumper instead of attacking all the way to the rim. Middleton or Coleman could have also been open for a pick and pop scenario to take the lead. A strategy I prefer on the road after expending a lot of energy on a big comeback. Don’t like playing for OT there unless it’s an uncontested layup they are conceding. I want to try and take the lead late if I can.
  • Lastly, an opportunity for Dual to prove something with Dylan out. Yet another underwhelming 21 minutes of action to say the least. And I won’t even get into the lack of production from Okorofor.

This is a good post but not one word about the defense, including Coleman's which got his butt glued to the bench?
Sure we can talk about the defense.

And I agree, for all the progress Coleman has made into evolving as the go to guy on offense, he still has a long way to go on the defensive side of the floor. He doesn’t stop dribble penetration, he closes out late, and often finds himself late in rotations and gives up lazy reach in fouls as a result.

Under both Willard and Sha our three point defense has been suspect at times. I attribute the years we’ve struggled to not being able to stop dribble drive penetration. When the team had guys like Gordon and McKnight it set the tone up top. If it broke down you still had solid rim protectors on the backend. This team is really bad at stopping dribble penetration and then lacks any semblance of rim protection. Which allows the opposing team to get into the paint and catch us completely out of sorts rotating. Thus the large amount of open looks from three point range. Same story just a different game. Butler was hitting them in the first half and just cooled off in the second.
This constant defensive breakdown also leads to more fouls and trips to the free throw line. 28 attempts for Butler is a lot to overcome.

Butler is not a good team but dominated us physically.

We have no center and no PG.Our best three players (Coleman,Jenkins and Middleton) all play the same position at SG.The roster construction is the worse SHU has had in memory.

Despite all this we were down 2 points with 40 seconds left in the game and came up empty.

Also, this help defense that Sha & Willard run works best with a rim protector, which we don’t have. It worked well in the non conference because the teams we played were not overly familiar with what we try to do or offensively challenged. That’s not the case in the Big East. Unless we adjust, we’re going to constantly get torched on the defensive end.

Someone needs to get this guy a podcast!

Over helping has been an issue going back yesrs. This leads to a breakdown on D, scrambling and wide open 3s. Interior defense is god awful

Jahseem, coleman, jenkins, middleton and a big should be our starting 5. Sub in dylan if someone is slacking on D

Then why sub in Coleman in the last minute for a red hot Felton??
Everyone needs to take a pause with the “red hot” Felton takes.

Prior to hitting the 3 that cut the lead to 74-72, he was 1-5 shooting. (20%)

And even with the make he was 2-6 (33%)

It was also his only FG attempt since making his other 3 point bucket at the 9:11 mark. 7 minutes in between shots.

That’s a far cry from red hot.

I'm giving credit to Butler for their tough play.
They did come up lucky with 3 desperate threes going in as the possession clock ran out.
Miss one, maybe we win...maybe.

Felton is just more productive than dual. Let him play and learn from mistakes.

No issues with that either. Dual hasn’t earned minutes IMO. Played only due to DAW being out injured.

But the 5 on the floor to cut the lead to 74-72 was Yalden, Toumi, Felton, Middleton, and Jenkins.

What does Dual have to do with Coleman being subbed in for Felton?

Also to be fair, Felton forced up 3 shots early in the game without even looking for his teammates. So if you are going to play him as your starting point guard, then he needs to embrace that role. Him getting the start was not the green light to chuck away. He needed to look to distribute and take his shot when it naturally presented itself.

Sha may have told Felton if he is open and they don't try to defend him to take the shot. If I was coaching against SHU I would tell my players that he is a freshman and until he proves he can make a shot don't worry about him and defend the other 4.

And Sha may have told Felton they will play you soft so if you are open take it.

I understood all the Felton talk when we couldn’t score. But now we’re scoring and can’t defend. He gets beat routinely on that end on the floor.

This roster just isn’t good enough across the board. Anytime you plug one leak another opens. And it’s so disappointing we’re sitting here 1-5 against the bottom of the league. We just allowed DePaul, Providence, and Butler to go for 80+ after choking a game away against Georgetown. Miserable.

And we gotta watch Pitino + Kadary wipe the floor with us on Saturday. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we keep that close.
