OT: Conference Realignment

Not sure I follow, the BIG is the best thing to ever happen to Rutgers University.
I said nothing about the B10 - that was a brilliant move.

I’m talking about football. It’s a money loser, and a big one - particularly for Rutgers.

My point isn’t to rip on Rutgers, it’s to rip on the fallacy that is college football. It’s a money pit, very few schools make any money from it.

Football is not a money loser by itself. RU Football does not make nearly enough money to finance the rest of the AD like some schools do. As a stand alone entity football most years is not a money loser. Heck, just the BIG tv money makes it hard to lose money on football.

Notice all the negative articles about RU athletic deficits are due to the total athletic department t. They are not about football/men's basketball losing money. I do admit RU Football does not make close to enough money to pay for the olympic sports

I don’t view football’s value as revenue / profit generation. Virtually no school makes money on football - this is documented.

It’s value is brand awareness and helping to drive academic enrollment.

But let’s look at the bigger picture vis-a-vis the Big East. Football is a major contributor to the collapse of the original Big East. We chased a drug, which was a losing proposition. It failed miserably and caused a lot of strife.

I have ZERO interest in picking up any ACC school for this reason alone.

this is less about conference realignment and more about a money grab. On one hand I'm hoping the ACC doesn't give them a single penny more , but on the other hand I would love to see old BE schools making less than other ACC teams.

But that's ALL revenues not just media revenues.

See the link below, this guy really knows what he is doing (LOL), the year ended 06/30/22 resulted in a huge jump in media revenues per the original contract and addition of UCONN as per my conversations with the BE Business Officer Kevin Flanagan.

Thanks, that is good info. I always appreciate the detail and sourcing in your posts.

The problem is what you feel and what the facts actually show are two different things. Villanova got almost 7.4M in 2022 which included NCAA units for 2 national championships. You can infer that the NCAA units are not shared equally from the data.. After the NCAA run last year I can see UConn getting to almost 8M of distributions in the next few years. It will be interesting to see what FOX does and if they would pay 100% more than what they were paying. Hey, the NBA is expecting to get double or triple what they are getting now.

I'm having a hard time making sense of your first statement. Regardless, Connecticut agreement with the big east expressly states that it will not share in any NCAA units earned prior to it joining the big east. So, if Villanova's NCAA credits from its championship runs are still in play, contractually Connecticut isn't entitled to a share of them.

I don't know how the big east allocates NCAA credits. Do you?

The point is schools are getting 4M with substantial NCAA money. Nobody is getting 8.155M from media rights only anytime soon and most don't won't get near that with NCAA money.
