OT: Sean Miller to Texas

Damn that’s yet another blow to the league.

Xavier had a remarkable string of successful hires before Steele. They basically went 20+ years with good hiring decisions until him. They cut bait quick and brought in Miller who had done well their in the past.

Is it round two for Chris Mack? Do they go back to that well again?

Miller is going to win a ton at Texas IMO. He probably had significant resources in addition to the revenue share even though it will be a far far far second fiddle to football. He’s already done well at the big football school environment.

Sean has the same DNA as Pitino. Interpret that as you will.
Miller did what most all coaches his age or younger would have done in this era especially. If they had the option and there wasn’t a family reason driving it the other way. The alternative would be to use the opening to drive up his salary or other benefits.

Trilly is saying Luke Murray to X. Have to think Chris Mack is a better choice.

Miller is gonna struggle at Texas. He eked into the tournament this year and could very well have been left home for the second year.

Texas has been past the tournament’s first weekend once in the last 17 years with all the talent and NBA players they’ve had rolling through their doors.

Ironic that Miller is not only joining the team he beat a couple days ago, it’s the same school an interim coach beat him to get to the elite 8 two years ago.

I’m not sure if he will struggle. He’s a damn good coach, easily top half of our league. He’s won with uber talented NBA players. Not a title and I’m not even sure he has a final 4, but he’s had success otherwise. He will get big time kids down there IMO.

He’s been a hot name with all the credit he gets for the offensive renovations at UConn, as you know. Both him and Kimani are or have been rumored with lots low to mid majors. Seems they’ve been pretty selective especially Kimani. But X is a good job and hard to turn down if he gets that opportunity.

Disagree. We will see

But Miller is not the same coach he was when he was at Xavier the first go around and not the guy he was before the issues at Arizona.

Time will tell

Assume he’ll end up with $15M guaranteed and plenty of NIL to spend what is needed to field a team. Don’t worry about him.

You don’t think he’s in the top half of BE coaches or you just don’t think he will succeed down there?

I think a little of both. I don’t like Pitino anymore, but between him, Shaka, Hurley, McDermott he’s 5th to me.

And I think he’s going to feel a lot of pressure down there in Texas.

The big question is if he’s the same coach he used to be. I’m not sure.

Do we rate on current ability or past accolades like Holtmann and Matta? Matta has a better past than Miller. Holtmann not quite but Miller had a lot more “resources”

I just think Texas could have done better.

You are kidding on the Arizona part right? Serious question before I responded and started a whole discussion on it (not trying to be a jerk or anything).
He was fired just saw that.

He got fired ok got it.

The whole Showtime documentary. His right hand Book Richardson basically being exiled. The Will Wade “strong a$$ offer” stuff.

Agree with Texas maybe being able to do better. Agree success isn’t guaranteed there.

As far as the Big East coaches go, the one and two are the most obvious answers they don’t need to be mentioned, regardless of how you rank them. Then it’s the McDermott, Shaka and Miller grouping, and yes I probably have Miller last in that threesome but look at Shaka’s NCAA success for a long, long period. Regardless that still puts Miller in the top half and then it’s a deep drop from there IMO because Matta has obvious health stuff that derailed his career and Cooley IMO has done a poor job at Gtown thus far after doing a solid one at Prov.

2 men whose behavior disqualifies them from even being considered by a Catholic school. Oh yeah, to forgive is devine

They're paid well at Connecticut. To be honest, though, I'm surprised that we've managed to keep them as long as we have.

Agreed. I mention to my UCONN buddies quite often about why they haven't gotten poached. In almost every sport (especially the NFL), the assistants are hot commodities. Two natty wins and not a sniff. Murray and Young make good bank (little under a million) but that pales in what they'd make as head coaches.

Luke needs a stop before a place like Xavier. He was overlooked at his alma mater Fairfield last year. And wasn't he unceremoniously canned at Xavier a few years ago?

There are people here living under a rock even with the tremendous job NY Shore does with PSA. I thought Texas would have been looking for a coach with a higher current profile. Surprised they didn't go after Wade.

I believe that was Louisville that fired him.

How about his issues as a coach at Arizona? Really don’t think all coaches his age or younger have done that.

Think Miller #3. Slick Rick and Hurley way above the rest. Miller has a bunch of Elite Eights. McDermott has only the one but Creighton is a solid program, always in tournament discussion year in year out. Think Shaka needs to make a run next year. It's been a long time since vcu and his teams continually under perform in NCAA (except for last season).
