Both parties have failed miserably on this issue for various reasons.

Whether we like Trump or not, if he can get meaningful legislation through this year that addresses securing the borders, deporting criminals, developing a pathway to citizenship, establishing annual immigration quotas and destroying the cartels, we should all celebrate.

Beyond getting it passed, implementation will be tricky and ongoing and I hope future administrations stay the course.

I'm more optimistic about Trump getting something done than Biden. Biden did eventually try, but if we're being honest, that was only to win an election.

My hope is dampened by the fear that there is no movement from the left on the border enforcement and no movement on the right for a path towards citizenship for those who have been here for years... or we will just keep kicking the can down the road to keep it a hot political issue.

That's the point. Consider all of that when discussing the issue.

Calling them all criminals, when they are not, in an effort to downplay actual criminal activity doesn't really do that though.

Again, overstaying a visa is not a criminal offense. Not showing up for asylum court is not a criminal offense. Being in the US illegally is not a criminal offense.

A person who has lived here for years, working and raising a family and not committing any actual crime is not a criminal.
and I would downplay those people further - the actions of being here is not as bad as jaywalking.

They are not criminals or felons. But being undocumented is a more serious problem when compared to a jaywalker.

We need to address that issue and offer a path to citizenship. It will be difficult but it can be done.

The act of being here that drains resources. You want to bring up the social security tax, but you know damn well they're not paying the federal income tax an American would pay. They're claiming married with 12 dependents, so no tax comes out. And many are getting straight cash so no tax being paid by many. On top of which every day Americans are being forced to pay for their insurance because we all know the insurance companies are putting their costs into our bills. And you can go on and on and on. Sharing a classroom, may mean your child isn't getting the attention he or she should be getting. Simple supply and demand causes rent and housing prices to go up. You can read that illegal immigrants are a net drain on us.
