PatT Hobbs named not interim but THE AD AT RU

snaketom, there are many gms, president of ops in pro leagues that are not very good at being the final decision maker and that is a vocation not a passion because these people are making 7 figure salaries to be wrong a lot of the time

Of course they make big bucks and what could be better than being paid for doing something that is a passion of yours. Let me see now would I rather be a practicing attorney or (Fill in the blank) Seton Hall AD or GM of the Mets??? Sorry but that would not be a very hard decision for me. PS: It doesn't even have to be GM. I'd settle for third base coach - lol.

I'm sure Hobbs is being seen as a potential successor to Bianchi. My guess is that Bianchi wants to get out of Dodge sooner rather than later. Hobbs needs to serve 2 to 3 years as AD to get in and learn the beast that RU is and move on. He'll make the Football hire, keep the other programs at bay and look to his next role.

Barchi's primary job was to oversee the UMDNJ merger. I have no idea if Hobbs is a potential successor, but I'm also not sure what Barchi's contract length is beyond the merger.

A good AD needs to be able to fund raise, communicate and have a plan. They don't need to be infinitely familiar with a lot of other minutia - that is what you hire coaches for. RU needs a good administrator with a vision and great communication skills. Even though it's a political hire it may be a good one. Thinking back to Pernetti I don't think he was ever an AD. He was a TV exec I believe. So Hobbs may work out for RU. Don't be surprised down the line if he steals our AD though if he ever moves into another position.

This thread is like a #$%^&, given while you scratch off a winning lottery ticket, while Chef Gordon Ramsay simultaneously cooks you a five-course meal and curses out everyone that you hate while they cry. Hobbs will do just fine at RU!

Hobbs may end up doing a great job as an AD, but based on that same line of thinking a neuro-surgeon, building mogul or community organizer can make an effective President.....experience does matter for most jobs....just look around.

When Patrick Hobbs began his new job as Rutgers athletic director on Monday, he will become one of the university's highest-paid employees, but his pay is far below two of the school's coaches and many of its medical school professors.

More than three dozen employees of the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School make more than Hobbs, but some of their compensation comes through research grants and work with patients and is not paid by state money or tuition.

Hobbs agreed to a five-year contract worth $560,000 per year, $110,000 more than his predecessor's base salary. He'll also be eligible for performance-based bonuses. As is frequently the case at the Division I level, several Rutgers coaches will make more than their bosses.

Now that Hobbs is gone and his influence on athletics at SH goes with him who becomes Lyons ally in pushing his agenda for athletics at SH. Hobbs had a lot of clout at SH and you have to wonder if there's someone to replace that influence that's pro athletics.

I have great respect for Patrick Hobbs, the man, and the SHU Law School Dean. However, I would not want the man I saw standing and clapping, alone, at last year's BET disaster, running my athletic department.

Question is, will he be at the game on Saturday? If so I will heckle the shit out of him.

Interested to see if his departure has any affect on our future decision making at SHU.

This is definitely interesting. I have known Pat since 1993 and I think he will do a pretty good job for Rutgers. It will be interesting for him over there since he has bled blue for so many years. Pat is a professional, a very good people's person, a great fundraiser and will do the best for Rutgers despite all there challenges. Seton Hall was very fortunate to have him on our team for so many years.

It is one thing to differ with him on decisions (Willard, length of contract, amount of pay, etc.) but he is definitely the type of person you want at the hierarchy of your school.

I'm completely shocked by this hire. How much pull does Christie have at RU? Football program is in shambles again and they are hiring a guy who has no past experience with anything in football. Now he is gonna run a football program in the Big 10. Seems like a big stretch to me. Politics have to be involved here.

We're all going to have to see how this all plays out. While FB has been the primary focus Hobbs could find himself also facing issues about who runs both the men's and women's basketball programs in the not too distant future.
On the selection of a new FB coach I think the power brokers at RU have identified who they want and just need to convince PH he's the right man. ( think GS ).

So if Pat is earmarked to take Barchi's job in a couple of years, it does make the RU job more attractive. Pat can hire someone as an AD/Coach in waiting. Let them come on and be the FB coach for two years, and when Hobbs gets bumped up, so does the coach to a combo role. The only way to sell RU is to give someone the total power and know that his boss will be President (and his guy!). That expands the pool of candidates for sure.....

I seriously doubt that the plan is to make Hobbs the University President. Being an top conference AD is a highly sought after position & I doubt that an additional carrot was needed to sell it. Hobbs does have strong political connections in both parties however and if there was a carrot I think it would be something else rather than University President.

FWIW, that is what I was told by someone with knowledge of the situation.

Nothing is ever written in stone but if Hobbs ever becomes the RU president I would be very surprised.

Maybe he'll wind up as Gabe's successor at SH .

Dr. Esteban is very pro athletics!

He'll be cheering for RU

Well. What would anyone expect. It's now his job to root for RU. I am sure he will always have a strong affinity for Shu and will want us to do well. Just not against RU. He is a good man and represented the school extremely well for many years. I hope he is successful. As a jersey guy I would like to see RU have a successful football program. It's all we really got in NJ.

He has 560,000 reasons every year as his nice carrot.

pernetti started out in the programming department at abc sports and climbed the corporate ladder with backroom dealings and all, he also got his masters at rutgers, ended up at cstv (what is now cbs sports network) where he helped bring conference usa and mountain west exclusively to the network and away from espn, both conferences saw it as a vehicle to push their marquee sports and programs and not be held hostage by espn dictated days and times of tv appearances. eventually the investment money in the network stopped coming in, network had little distribution and ad sales and cbs corp purchased the network and its online official sports site assets to many prominent athletic programs. pernetti was at a standstill once this happen and since he always bled scarlet and was ex football player and had a big likability the ad job was a natural fit. his background helped in pushing ru to big ten because he knew what the big ten network money would mean.

Um, no. Rutgers needs to go 1AA where they can waste less money and rise to mediocrity. Seriously, no high major in this area plays football.

Wait the guy who hired Kevin Willard was going to be in the cabinet? Like the Presidential cabinet? Of the United States? I might have to move to Canada.

If it was ever President Christie's cabinet, you should move farther than Canada.
