LAST GAME
Senior Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) scored a team-high 22 points, but the Pirates closed out the 2022-23 regular season with an 83-56 loss to No. 11 Villanova on Monday in Walsh Gym.

The Pirates close out the regular season with a 17-13 record overall and a 10-10 mark in BIG EAST play. The Hall has earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament and will face No. 11 Xavier in the opening round on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Seton Hall scored the first four points of the game, but a 12-0 Villanova run put them in front for the remainder of the contest.

Baines had 22 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the floor to go with five rebounds.

2023 BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
Seton Hall has earned the No. 6 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and just missed out on a bye to bypass the first round. As a result, the Pirates will face No. 11 Xavier in round one with the winner advancing to face No. 3 Creighton in the quarterfinals at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

If the Pirates play Creighton, it'll be the third straight season that the two teams have hooked up in the quarterfinals as part of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 game. In 2021, third-seeded Seton Hall was upset by No. 6 Creighton. In 2022 however, the sixth-seeded Pirates upset No. 3 Creighton.

Seton Hall is 26-37 all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament. They are 1-0 all-time against Xavier in the event, with a 66-42 rout of the Musketeers in the first round of the 2018 tournament in Chicago.

The Pirates have never won the BIG EAST Tournament, but have advanced to the finals four times, including most recently at the 2015 event when the top-seeded Hall fell to No. 2 DePaul.

EARLIER THIS YEAR AGAINST XAVIER
Seton Hall completed a sweep of the Musketeers in the 2022-23 regular season series. In fact, the Pirates have now won eight straight games against Xavier.

Senior Lauren Park-Lane had a game-high 24 points and Sidney Cooks notched a double-double as The Hall downed Xavier, 74-55, in its first BIG EAST contest of the 2022-23 season on Dec. 2 in the Cintas Center.

In all, five Pirates scored at least eight points in a balanced offensive affair. Park-Lane finished with 24 points on 8-for-19 shooting with six assists. Cooks tallied 15 points and a team-best 10 rebounds along with four assists and four steals.

On Feb. 18 in Walsh Gym, Park-Lane and Azana Baines registered double-doubles to lift the Pirates to a 72-59 victory on Senior Day against the Musketeers. A 9-0 run early in the third quarter enabled the Pirates to pull away.

Park-Lane notched her second straight double-double and fourth of the season with a game-high 20 points on an efficient 9-for-15 shooting to go with 10 assists. Baines tallied her third double-double in 2022-23 with 19 points on 9-for-14 shooting with 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals.

SCOUTING XAVIER:
This year, the Musketeers have a new look as their top two-scorers transferred to teams in the BIG EAST with Nia Clark heading to Marquette and the Pirates acquiring Kae Satterfield. Xavier was picked to finish last in the 11-team league according to the preseason coaches' poll.

After starting the season with wins in their first five games, the Musketeers have had their share of difficulties. Xavier went 0-20 in BIG EAST play and enters the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 11 seed having lost their last 19 games. The Musketeers have shown signs of fight lately, however. They fell at No. 9 Connecticut by only nine points on Monday.

Mackayla Scarlett leads Xavier with 10.5 points per game, while Fernanda Ovalle is averaging 8.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest. As a team, Xavier's 55.1 points per game and .373 field goal percentage rank last in the BIG EAST.

UP NEXT
With a victory over Xavier, Seton Hall will advance to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament and face No. 3 Creighton on Saturday. Tip time is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET. The contest will be nationally televised on FS2. Mike Federico and Spencer Gonzalez will describe the action for WSOU FM.

So, they must beat Xavier in this first game. Play a solid game and try to pull away to get the starters some rest. Win that one and Creighton waiting. Have to at least make the WNIT. Like to see LPL go for 20 and 10.
