Pirates Set Two School Records on Day One at BIG EAST

Indianapolis, Ind. – Both relay teams set new program records as the Seton Hall women's swimming and diving team wrapped up a strong Day One of the BIG EAST Championships at IU Natatorium.

The finals started with the 200 Medley Relay team earning a third-place finish. Leiya Istambouli (Danbury, Conn.), Yosun Hacifazioglu (Istanbul, Turkey), Sarah Frie (Waterford, Va.) and Lea Moeller (New Lenox, Ill.) combined to touch the wall in a time of 1:42.76, topping the previous mark of 1:43.00 set back in 2017.

Later on, the 800 Free Relay crew picked up the team's second program record of the night. Amanda Zajdzinski (Mesa, Ariz.), Madeleine Bachand (Raleigh, N.C.), Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) and Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.) took fifth in the event with a time of 7:24.19. That surpassed the record of 7:24.34 which was set back in 2019.

In the 1-meter diving finals, Silvia Alessio (Trieste, Italy) took home a second place finish with a total score of 303.55. This marks the best finish in a diving event by a Pirates women's diver since Taylor Jackson's victory in the 3-meter event back in 2018. Laura Stavila (Oakland, Calif.) also qualified for the finals of the 1-meter, finishing seventh with a score of 242.80.

Seton Hall finds itself in second place overall with 180 total points, trailing only UConn who tallied 244 points.

Waggoner Takes 500 Free Title on Day Two of BIG EAST Championships​

Indianapolis, Ind. – Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) became the first Pirate woman to become BIG EAST champion in the 500 Free in 30 years as the Seton Hall women's swimming and diving team wrapped up Day Two of the 2024 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships.

Waggoner's win came in the first event of the night, touching the wall with a time of 4:47.52. This time broke her own program record, which she set earlier this season during the WVU Invite. Waggoner is the first Seton Hall women's swimmer to win the 500 Free at the BIG EAST Championships since Carla Setter did so back in 1994.

In the 50 Free finals, Lea Moeller (New Lenox, Ill.) picked up a fifth-place finish, coming in with a time of 23.25. The Pirates also scored well in the Consolation Final in the event, as Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.) placed first and ninth overall with a time of 23.41.

The night capped off with the 200 Free Relay, which saw the Pirates claim a fifth-place finish. Moeller, Madeline Field (Wheaton, Ill.), Josie McCartney (Verona, Wisc.), and Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.) combined for a time of 1:34.02 in the event.

After two days of competition, the Pirates find themselves in fifth place overall with 344 total points. Villanova holds the overall lead with 503 points.

The Pirates are back in the pool on Friday for the third day of action at the BIG EAST Championships. Events include the 100 Fly, 400 IM, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, women's 3-meter dive and 400 Medley Relay.
 

Alessio Wins 3-Meter Title on BIG EAST Day Three​

Indianapolis, Ind. – Silvia Alessio (Trieste, Italy) took home the gold medal in the women's 3-meter dive to highlight the third night of competition at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships.

Alessio posted a total score of 337.50, good enough to surpass her program record of 337.20 which was set earlier this season at Bucknell. With the victory, Alessio becomes the first Pirates female diver to win a BIG EAST championship since Taylor Jackson in 2018.

The win for Alessio comes two days after taking home the silver medal in the 1-meter finals on Wednesday night. For Alessio on the season, she posted first-place finishes in all but two diving finals.

In the swimming events, Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) added a bronze medal to her collection after taking third in the 400 IM. Waggoner finished the event with a time of 4:18.19, coming in over five seconds faster than her prelims time.

Later on in the evening, Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.) would take home a sixth-place time of 1:49.66 in the 200 Free. Heim swam the anchor of the 400 Medley Relay team which also consisted of Julie Stampe (Allerod-Birkerod, Denmark), Yosun Hacifazioglu (Istanbul, Turkey), and Sarah Frie (Waterford, Va.). That group finished in fifth place with a time of 3:47.85. Both Stampe and Hacifazioglu also posted wins in consolation finals on Friday, with Stampe taking the "C" final of the 100 Back in 56.86 and Hacifazioglu winning the "B" final of the 100 Breast in 1:03.89.

After three days, the Pirates sit in fifth place overall with 659 points. Villanova continues to hold the team lead with 1,079 points.

Waggoner Wins 1650 Free, Breaks Two Records on Day Four​

Indianapolis, Ind. – Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) smashed a pair of school records en route to her second straight gold medal in the 1650 Free on the final night of the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships from IU Natatorium.




Waggoner's win came in a time of 16:18.01, which was also an NCAA "B" cut time. The time broke her own school record of 16:28.27 which was set during the WVU Invite earlier this season. Waggoner also swam a 1000 Free split of 9:50.63 during her victory, also surpassing her school record time from WVU of 9:56.82.



Graduate student Madeleine Bachand (Raleigh, N.C.) also posted a strong performance in the mile, taking eighth place overall with a time of 17:12.03.

In the 100 Free, Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.) narrowly missed matching her own school record by touching the wall in 50.27, good enough for a fourth-place finish in the event. Heim was just behind her time of 50.15 that she achieved during last year's BIG EAST Championships.

Heim would go on to swim the opening leg of the Pirates' 400 Free Relay to finish off the night. She, along with Leiya Istambouli (Danbury, Conn.), Amanda Zajdzinski (Mesa, Ariz.) and Lea Moeller (New Lenox, Ill.) posted a time of 3:23.91 to finish in fourth place.

At the conclusion of the meet, Waggoner and Silvia Alessio (Trieste, Italy) each received individual awards for their efforts during the BIG EAST Championships. Waggoner was named Women's Co-Most Outstanding Swimmer, while Alessio was named Women's Most Outstanding Diver.




Overall, the Pirates finished the week in fifth place with 883.5 points.
