PROMOTIONS
  • The game is presented by Seton Hall ROTC
LAST GAME
Sophomore Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) had a double-double and set the Seton Hall women's basketball single-game record for steals as the Pirates downed Xavier, 72-47, in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.

Catalon finished with a program-record 11 steals, a record that was set by Pirates' Hall of Famer Phyllis Mangina with 10 steals against Saint Peter's on Jan. 19, 1978, and matched by Ozelina Gorham three years later. Overall, Seton Hall's 23 team steals are the highest by any BIG EAST team in conference play so far this season, and are one shy of the program team record.

The Hall ran away from Xavier in the second half thanks largely to the Pirates' full-court pressure. The Musketeers committed 33 turnovers for the game, including 20 in the second half.

Catalon finished with 17 points and 11 steals for the first double-double of the year for any Pirate. Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) had 16 points and four rebounds. Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Seton Hall All-Time vs. the Golden Eagles: Marquette leads, 20-12
Earlier This Year:
Seton Hall 58, Marquette 52 (F) – January 15, 2025 (Al McGuire Center)

AGAINST MARQUETTE
Seton Hall and Marquette will meet for the second time this season on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles own a 20-12 all-time series lead, but The Hall snapped a three-game losing streak to Marquette earlier this season with a 58-52 victory on Jan. 15. The win was the program's first-ever over the Golden Eagles in the Al McGuire Center. Seton Hall is a sparkling 12-2 in Walsh Gym this season, while Marquette is just 4-6 on the road.

EARLIER THIS WEEK AGAINST MARQUETTE
Freshman Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) had a game-high 20 points to lift the Seton Hall women's basketball team to a 58-52 victory at Marquette on Jan. 15. The victory is the first ever for the program in Milwaukee, snapping an 0-14 record in road games at Marquette.

Eads finished with a game-high 20 points to go with five rebounds and three steals. Graduate student Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) tallied 14 points and eight rebounds, while Ja'Kahla Craft (Elk River, Minn.) collected a career-high 10 points to go with five rebounds and two steals.

SCOUTING MARQUETTE
This season, Marquette was again picked to finish 10th in the 11-team BIG EAST Conference.

The Golden Eagles enter Wednesday's game with a 15-8 overall record and a 7-5 mark in BIG EAST play. Currently, Marquette is tied for fourth place with Villanova and two games behind Seton Hall for third place. Since playing Seton Hall, the Golden Eagles have won four of six games, but are coming off a surprising loss to Butler, 67-65, on Sunday in Indianapolis. Skylar Forbes leads the team with 15.6 points per game, while Lee Volker and Halle Vice are also averaging in double-figures in scoring.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 16 when it travels to face BIG EAST rival Providence. Tip time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET. The contest will be streamed by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available to FloCollege subscribers. 89.5 FM WSOU or wsou.net will also carry the game.

This is big contest for The Women's Team. They really need this to put a stronghold on 3rd Place in the Conference. Hopefully, an enthusiastic crowd.

Great to hear Tony yelling about No Threes and Don't Overhelp in the huddle as the 4th Q started in the last game. Yep. Faith and Jada have to be solid and not try to do too much. Catalon really stepped up in the prior one.

The score is 30-30 at the half. Jada Eads with 19 points including a last second 3 at the end of the half. Catalon out with the flu. Hall battling to catch up through first 2 Quarters. Good crowd and a competitive game so far. Jada kept them in.

Hall lose to Marquette 68-61. Missing Catalon really hurt. Jada played great. Amari played well and that's really it. The frontcourt players had a very poor game across the board. Outrebounded 40-26 and unusually soft interior defense. Jada with 26 points did her part.

So, now they have to win the remaining games aside from Uconn and hold on to third place. At this point the WNIT seems like the realistic path. Hopefully, they get to play at least one at Walsh.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) erupted for a game-high 26 points, but a depleted Seton Hall women's basketball team fell, 68-61, to Marquette in Walsh Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Seton Hall was down several players due to illness, most notably starter Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas).

The key to Seton Hall's victory over Marquette in Milwaukee on Jan. 15 was out-rebounding the Golden Eagles, which was leading the BIG EAST in rebounds at the time. Today, The Hall was out-rebounded, 41-to-28, including 10 of the first 12 rebounding going to Marquette.

Eads had 26 points on 10-for-21 shooting from the field. Graduate student Kaydan Lawson (Cleveland, Ohio), making her first start of the season, had 10 points and three rebounds.

THE STORY:
Marquette raced out to a 10-2 start against a flat Seton Hall group hampered by injuries. The Hall battled back thanks largely to the hot shooting of Eads, who poured in 12 of her 26 points in the first quarter and was 5-for-7 from the floor. Marquette out-rebounded Seton Hall, 13-to-4, in the first 10 minutes, but only led 16-14.

Trailing 21-14, The Hall went on a 7-0 spurt, and a jumper by Masonius tied the score at 21 with 7:03 to play before the break. Marquette counter-punched with a 6-0 burst to go back up by six, 27-21, but the Pirates clawed back, and Eads hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to send the teams into halftime tied at 30.

A free-throw by Lawson gave The Hall its first lead of the game, 33-32, only 1:30 into the second half. A minute later, Lawson drained a three-pointer to give the Pirates a four-point cushion. Marquette, however, answered with an 11-0 run to grab a 44-38 advantage 4:14 left in the third. Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Eads hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the score at 44 with 2:03 to play in the third. Marquette, however, took off again, and a 10-0 run put the Golden Eagles in control entering the fourth quarter.

Mired in foul trouble and down 12, The Hall still managed to make a run late, and a three-pointer by Yaya Lops (Stamford, Conn.) with 1:39 left to play cut its deficit to 64-59. On the Pirates' next possession, Lawson had a chance to cut Seton Hall's deficit to two with a straightaway three-pointer, but it rimmed out. Instead, Marquette closed out the game on the free-throw line.

THE NUMBERS:
  • Seton Hall was 23-for-58 (39.7%) from the floor for the game, while Marquette was 25-for-53 (47.2%). The Hall was 8-for-24 (33.3%) from three-point range, while the Golden Eagles were 3-for-17 (17.6%).
  • Eads had a game-high 26 points on 10-for-21 shooting, including 4-for-11 from three-point range.
  • Marquette out-rebounded Seton Hall, 41-to-28, which included a 12-to-8 edge on the offensive glass and a 10-to-7 advantage in second-chance points.
  • Lawson had 10 points and three rebounds.
  • Seton Hall was 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the free-throw line, while Marquette was 15-for-24 (62.5%).
  • Seton Hall forced 15 turnovers, while the Golden Eagles forced 13. Marquette, however, had a 15-to-11 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
THE NOTES:
  • Seton Hall falls to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette improves to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
  • The Hall is now 12-21 all-time against the Golden Eagles. The teams split the 2024-25 home-and-home series with each team winning on the road.
  • It's the 20th time in 24 games that the Pirates have forced more turnovers than their opponent.
  • The Pirates collected at least 10 steals for the 16th time this season.
  • With three assists today, Wright passed former Pirate Christine Koren into sixth place on Seton Hall's career list with 390.
  • With a steal today, Wright became only the eighth player in Seton Hall history to reach 200 for her career.
